30thousand won (equivalent to nowadays 20$)

What??? Do you imagine that the value of money remains unchanged??? For your information, in 1935 Korea 30,000 won (actually, yen) was a huge amount of money. The unskilled wokrer's monthly wage was 30 (thirty) yen. A Japanese clerk in the colonial aministration could get about 100 yen a month, and a successful medical doctor of lawyer could gross up to 500 yen (following your logic, Korean - or, rather, ethnic Japanese - doctor in 1935 had to survive on 40 cents a month!). I do not remember the then current exchange rates, but it's definitely closer to US$20,000 (1935 dollars, not 2004 dollars) than to $20. If measured by the average salaries, this is rough equivalent to $1.5 million, not to $20.

Like all other founders of Korean conglomerate (Hyundai Chong Chu-yong being a rare exception), Lee came from a very rich family who decided to invest into something new, instead of good old tradition of buying more land and squeezing more rent from shareholders. He was brilliant (if 100% corrupt) guy, a real rober baron, but he was not a self-made-man

passerby, 30,000 won at that time was enough to buy a nice house(just a house), no more or less. Right now 30,000 is a really small money in Korea. You can only buy 30 cheap pens. Or you need 600,000 won to buy a proper phone. So you can imagine how small 30,000 is(starting from a house), and how much advance that samsung has made. From a value of a house to the world class group with 500 companies and 12 submersive groups (each with around 100 companies). I cannot imagine being in the headquarter's top office where it is governing totally about 1000 different companies. (including samsung electronics)
He was defintely not the self-made-man. But it is still remarkable to start a company during the japanese colonization and then become bigger than most of them. But, I must respect Chong Chu-yong, who started from "Nothing" and became a bigger conglomerate than samsung (Not now, though...)
Being separated into 10 different groups, Hyundai is still one of the top conglomerate along with LG Samsung and Lotte.
