N97 ->anncounced too early?

N96 released in early september, three months only later and the next flagship is announced. Isn't it too early?
doesnt nokia think about the people that bought the expansive N96?
They could announce it in MWC or later next year. maybe strategic step to avoid Xperia X1 sales ?
They also combied E series in N Series -> the qwerty. so what's now special in E Series ? because its marketed as a E Series ?

It's not a business phone, it's an "instant messaging" device.

thats illogical. qwerty is such a useful thing to have. its addictive... its a must have (portfolio wise) in the N series as well. this just nails it IMO. the device looks gorgeous.

N97 doesn't really compete against the N96, as they are very different phones. So N96 won't take a hit from it.

But yeah, announcing a product 6 months before it's released is a bit annoying for us, cause there will be a long wait. But they done that before, like with the N95.

why another thread for the N97?

and yeah, the N96 still is the "video oriented" flagship or whatnot. the N97 is a messaging/social networking phone

Like others have said, announcing the device this far from it being available in shops isn't a nice thing to do.

I would say yes.
I'd rather had short time waiting period than having 6 month painfully waiting this phone on market. Not to mention that N96 is just on market 2 months ago.
But at least we dont need keep asking where is the nokia flagship phone for 2009.

Because it works? The iPhone was announced in January - and came out in June. Same with the other phones - like the blackberry storm, and I think the Touch Pro?

What "6 MONTHS before launch... "? "1st half of 2009" does not have to be the last day of it...
Potential buyers need at least 6 months to save enough money for N97 anyway

I think this is a great phone and all, but I think it's stretching its limit as a phone. Doesn't anyone else think 550 Euros is a little overboard for a cellphone in general?

I suppose we've reached the end of the logic finally. "I want this phone to be made of luxury materials and handcrafted, have the power of Cray, small nuclear reactor as a battery that would last for a hundred years, SLR quality of pictures and HD video, big-ass display. I want all that and I want it now... But isn't 550 euro a bit too much for the phone?"

From a point of view I agree with you, it’s certainly pricy (for me) but then again if we considerate it’s market audience then that price (over 500€) is, by my opinion, expected.

N97 at this moment is the flag ship of N-Series and flag ships usually costs lot’s of money.

Of course with almost the same amount of money one could bought a mediocre laptop computer – but from my point of view .. it’s not that mobiles got expensive but laptop computers got cheaper over the years that’s why now those smart phone prices seems expensive enough compared to a full fledged (even mediocre in quality or capabilities terms) computer system.

Pricy (for me) or not, N97 seems to be an already market winner, at least for the time being.

All Nseries flagships started at 550€ recommended price afair...so i don't see why the N97 is particularly overpriced. It's not cheap for sure, but then again, neither is its competition...

Right time. With the N96 notdoing too well and Nokia going back slightly due to te new phones from compretitiors, the least they could do was announce the N97 and make people aware that a new better phone is coming and not to buy another phone.

That’s what I am talking about, if we compare it been flagship and competition-wise its price is well expected (not that it's cheap of course).

I swear, if n97 launched instantly like what nokia did with n82, it would definately destroy other companies phone sale (high end).

wouldnt say it kills the 5800 as the 5800 is substantially cheaper. Too be honest, i like the N97 very much and luckily my wallet allows me to buy it when it's released. If i was in a different position financially and i was looking for a Touch Nokia phone i wouldn't buy a N97 but rather a 5800 as you will get the most things N97 has (except for 5mpix cam, qwerty, software and built in memory etc, ) but for a far lower price.

It didn't kill the 5800, the 5800 is all about being cheap, remember?

And to be honest, I'm still getting a 5800, I need a new phone kinda urgently, and don't have to save too much to get it.

If anything, the N97 helps the sales of 5800. People aspire to have N97, but not everyone will have the money to have it. So they go for the 5800 and can get almost what they really wanted. So called "Halo" effect.

I intend to get both this & the 5800. The 5800 will act as a proof of concept for the N97.

I just got an 5800 as a preview copy. It is not as slick as the iPhone, but if you like (or tolerate) S60, its pretty cool. I am suprised that the UI is generally fairly quick. Somehow the touch usage makes the phone a bit more fun to use.

I like immediate releases much more. Few months waiting is not bad, but five or more...no good.

Me too, I like to discover the device myself and not to see them at live and feel like "old news" because I saw hundreds of design/GUI pictures several months before actual release!

Specs 2-3 months before + actual pictures 1-2 months before seems quite enough.

One vote for immediate releases from here too. What I liked about this release was that N97 didn't have leaked images floating around the web ages before the announcement. Surprises are just so much better!
