Nokia N800 internet tablet now official

http://www.flickr.com/photos/5th_ave...7594461870146/

Looks great! Seems like it is about to hit the market soon, given the retail looking box etc. It even has a CompUSA sticker on the top right corner off the box in one of pics! The lack of a hard protective cover to shield the big beatiful screen is a step back from the original, but I am sure the other improved specs, most notably the in built webcam (would have been better if it was not that "slide out" type though)!

And in case you have not seen these earlier spy pics that show the stand on the back etc.

ps. The place holder page is already up, so sounds like we'll see this too on Monday (in addition to N93i and N76)!

I have been looking forward to this for a while now

The most intresting news is the fact that the box states is an nSeries device. This means that Nokia are bringing Linux out of the underground and taking it mass market. Very good news.

the page photo holder is up now, seems like we are going to see N76, N93i and N800 on this coming Monday...
still hope N93i will surprise me at least about its superior specification than N93 somehow

Looks nice imho, a bit better than the 770...

badger, do you know anything about other (ie non-internet-tablet) Linux devices from Nokia?

Yes, I was trying to remember if the N-series even existed when the original N770 came out. I guess it did. But now N800 is recognized as part of the family!

It looks like a very nice device and I'd like to see if Linux will play a bigger role in Nokia's range of smartphones. Given the fact that S60 will eventually implement TS, I wonder if Linux will be limited to only this kind of devices...

This just in on possible pricing!!

One nice spec in the N800 is the stereospeakers (N770 is mono).

I am not sure, but isn't there a different Linux based OS for phones (i.e. different from the N770/800 based on Maemo). Anyway, it could be that Nokia is keeping Linux/open source in these kinds of nieche products for now, but maybe in the future. [Frankly, they could even try Microsoft to gain more foothold in the US if needed (the new CEO and the rest of the managemnt seem quite pragmatic and willing to do whatever the market demans)]

An attempt of size comparison between 770 and 800. Does not look 100% accurate, but gives an idea. Basically, wider, a little less tall.

http://blog.tokash.org/2007/01/05/no...ternet-tablet/

AND!! IF this is true its fantastic. From ringnokia.com blog (good one btw!). A guy claims he had called and..

"Posted by: Jay | 2007.01.06 at 07:00

Just called CompUSA in Cincinnati and they say they have the N800 available for $399."

WOOHOO! Fantastic, the same price as the N770 was when it came out!

Apparently in USA they are selling N800 before introducing It ,
price in the Europe is probably going to be the 1.3*399$=399? and again they probably won't send them to Slovenia

If you noticed, I mentioned in my original post that one of the pics has the CompUSA price tag on the box (upper right hand corner on the top of the box), so it does seem feasible that they would have shipped already, and are just waiting for the announcement on Monday to be put on the store shelves on Monday or Tuesday... Granted, VERY un-Nokia like if it were true, but then again who knows and Nokia is trying very hard in the US (and N770 was/is fairly succesful here for a pilot nieche product).

No need for that, IMHO. It is not intended to be a phone. There dozens of phones in Nokia lineup to choose from.

Video of it in action:
http://blog.tokash.org/2007/01/07/no...-first-of-many

YouTube now works, sorta, barely; but I am sure it will improve with firmware updates and/or new apps being developed by the Linux/Maemo geeks

No it is not, really, IMO. Sure it could be faster, but it does quite ok. What you need to think of it as is more like a pocket portable, cheap computer/tablet and not compare its speed to cell phones.

here are some more details, including a link to some nifty addons for it such as a finger-driven music player and a facility to boost its wifi capabailities.

Among the CES announcements my eye is for now on the N800.. (although the N76 is growing on me too). Now that's where the innovation is at! Linux perfectionists do not like the announced Skype and Rhapsody co-ops, but to me those are a huge selling point.

alexandr3, my N71 also has an 'mp3 player',but it has backround noise on high volumes whilst dedicated mp3 players have clear sound on any volumes.

I asked if N800 had a high quality audio player.

Esakia, you could try asking this question in the www.internettablettalk.com forums - a few members over there had the N800 even before its official release...And I guess right now there will be more than a handfull already using it

Too bad it doesn't have GSM/GPRS/WCDMA connection, but

maybe the main thing is to use it in the sofa or in bed to browse the web.

Most definately. Out performs some to an extent.

It does though, lack an equaliser but it makes up for it in clarity and volume. I normally have neutral settings myself anyway.

1500 mAh, length depends really on usage. (Screen Brightness/other apps running etc etc)

Internet browsing - 3-4 hours intenslly flicking new links every minute.

Look what I got today

Nokia gives me 14 days to test and review it - so, if there are any questions, I'd be glad to answer them!

Thanks to Donna at www.womworld.com and Teo from www.symbian-freak.com for giving me the opportunity for this!
