If this is supposed to be the general thread for discussion of user experiences of N86, isn't "software/hardware problems and issues thread" a way too negative topic name?

I would both think and hope that the number of positive experiences surpass the negative issues

    Appreciate the thread, though

    Initial user impressions (from rev_zone):

    Pro

01] the sliding feel is very solid, firm yet you don't feel the stiffness there.
02] keypad lock button on the left side of the phone is what I like best so far. when you need to read a sms, no longer need to press 2 buttons or slide the phone up in order to unlock. with the keypad lock button you just need a quick slide touch and it will unlock.
03] focusing timing from the camera was fast
04] screen rotate is quite responsive
05] all buttons and keypad button touch was nice to press on and not too stiff.

    Cons

01] sending of SMS was slow. when I click "send", I only see the "sending" icon appear when I count on to 5 from the moment I click "send".
02] for all your contacts, you can't select SD card as your default saving memory or contacts to display. Only phone, Sim and service number was available.
03] sharpest and clarity for camera is BAD. Tried to operate without flash, the actual effect of the picture is not the same as the kind of sharpest and clarity I saw on the screen. It give me a very cloudy or fogging effect or in short maybe I shall say it's blur.
04] A very smart and well protected phone. Under my App setting Software Installation was ALL and Online Certificate check is OFF yet I still keep receiving "Certificate Error". I tried to change the date from 2009 to 2007 but still it doesn't seems to work. So meaning lots of useful app we can't install for this phone.
05] speaker was BAD as well. Stereo effect is too strong which turns into so much echo effect. songs that I played the vocal was not clear at all and the echo is so strong that certain part of the song will over lap each other. Imagine it was so bad to the extend my wife was asking me, what happened to your phone when someone was calling me and she can hear the bad effect of the ringing tone from an mp3 song.

Give me a choice I will switch back to a brand new N82.

    Issues: (some user posted)
    1. MY BIGGEST GRIPE about the N86 8MP: there is no release button for the battery cover like that of N79/85/95 so you will need to pry the back cover off like some cheap phone. I wonder if it will stand the test of time. I just hope it is covered by Nokia warranty.
Can anyone confirm battery cover release action, is it difficult or not?

    2. The camera button is way way way too stiff. I makes me miss my terrific N79 camera button. But again maybe with use the stiffness will lessen.
If true, this is not good

    3. Camera shutter sound OFF? Is there any way to make it quiet?

Well, yes and no. Initial comments will be most likely I like this, don't like that, this doesn't work... quite usual for fresh released FW. On the other side if people say all the best all the time, that doesn't give you any picture, does it? Small things make a big difference. Those "issues" for some people might be quite annoying, others may find them useful. For example, the absence of back cover latch, some might find useful as it will not get loose in time (wobble), other may find it quite annoying. At the end, point of such discussion is that end user should choose product according to his personal preferences.

The more "issues" we discuss the better judgment we make.

    Cheers,
    Miki

    New review:
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/revie...first_look.php

"The N86 boasts a variable aperture, which means the size of the aperture (optical diameter) can be varied. The N86 has three settings: F2.4, F3.2 and F4.8, other phones typically have a fixed aperture (Nokia's are generally at F2.8). Varying the size of the aperture means the amount of light let into the sensor can be changed. Higher F numbers mean a smaller opening and, as well as letting in less light, this can give sharper images. The overall effect of this is that the N86 can produce higher quality photos over a greater range of lighting conditions. While the most noticeable difference will be in low light conditions (where camera phones typically struggle), the N86 will also take better photos in very sunny conditions (sharper)."

    Those image samples really rocks

Sorry to say but the images dont look half as good as their competitors. Look more like an unfinished product now which Nokia had to start shippng because of a market pressure. Hopefully the latter firmwares will fix it.

Maybe some of them, like that street image (a bit out of focus), but that insect image is excellent. Can't wait to get full comparison in various light conditions. And every new FW seem to drastically improve image quality/processing.... (take N79/N85 for example, new FW really made the difference in image quality comparing to old ones)

In case you've missed it, here is the framing difference between a regular cameraphone and the wide-angle Nokia N86 8MP. (Source: GSMArena)

However, having image resolution identical (3264x2448 pixels) everything will appear smaller on N86. That's the price you pay for larger footprint.

    Miki

    Thanks

So folks, can anyone confirm this Camera button issue? Some user said it's way too stiff, GSMArena had no problems, in fact they said it's quite ok. So which is it?

    Cheers,

I'm egar to buy this phone very much, so my questions:

    1. What about open/close backside of the phone? Is it difficult to do it?

    2. How is the flash comparing to N85/N95?

    3. How fast is GPS locking? I know this depends on locaitons (available sattelite), but still?

    4. how about those small buttons on the fascia (Call, end, C)? Are they too small/hard to press

    5. Keypad (as I type a lot of SMS) is it comfortable?

    6. This "sending SMS" problem, is it true that it is very slow?

    7. Any software problems so far? Like restarts, shut dows.....

And what about Camera button, is it comfortable enough?
And can you check if there is any way to turn off camera shutter sound.

Needs time to get used to adjusting my right hand fingers as the len is position more the extreme end area and seems like got wide screen feature.

Camera button abit stiff but easy to get it focus before taking the shot.

and what about this wide lens making image smaller (as I wrote about few posts above)? Is it something that bothers you, or not an issue at all?

rev_zone, my man congrats on your new phone. I read on the AAS that its running v10 firmware with minor glitches. What "glitches" or bugs have you noticed? Hows the phone running overall, the music playback, battery performance, keypad and menu buttons etc. Basically your first impressions!

    thanx rev,

    1. what about camera menu, any improvements comparing to older Nokia?

    2. Can you tell us more about sound quality? Your comment was that is very bad. Did you change your opinion?

    3. Is there Stopwatch in N86?

So, according to GSM Arena, N86 doesn't have face recognition, blink detection or smile recognition, no Xenon. Basically it doesn't have any new features than "old days" N95 except it's now 8MP. Right, it has panorama mode which I doubt anyone will find useful.

C905 even released almost a year ago, is more feature packed (concerning camera) than brand new N86, not to mention much nicer camera UI.

Lol. Sure those would be nice for the spec hounds, but if the pic quality and performance across various shooting conditions is good, who gives a flying F about smile detection or some such thing. Smiling is over rated anyway. :-)

My N95 never stood the test of time. I went through 3 replacement battery covers.

If this is like the N97, I think its for the better. The N97 battery cover is very sturdy.

Oh man, am I the only lucky bastard here?

Talking about the reinforced glass screen. It was so cool that my sister-in-law when she first hold onto my phone she keep pressing the screen thinking it's a touch-screen phone. Screen design is one of the best I had seen among all nokia model so far but very easy to leave your fingerprint and palm sweat over it.

    >>>>> Nothing additional that caught my attention.

    2. Can you tell us more about sound quality? Your comment was that is very bad. Did you change your opinion?
    >>>>> Sad to say there's no other options. 3D sound was off and basically there's no other option to lower down the stereo which causes the echo. My comment was totally running on default mode.

    3. Is there Stopwatch in N86?
    >>>>> Nope

I'm using a 4GB sd card but getting a 8GB soon. Max it can support is 16GB.

If you have lots of mp3 stored in your sd card, browsing speed is superb.

My earlier posting basically had answered most of your questions on my first impression on the phone.

Battery (full charge 7 bars) and ever experience left 3 bars, I set it to "power saving" mode and it can last me another 10hrs with some simple usage on SMS and some short calls until it drop to 1 bar but "low batt" alert was still not shown.

Minor glitches or bugs, not any that I notice of.

Screen rotation was very sensitive & responsive which impressed one of by buddy considering this phone.

    Dear Friend

The journey of phones which you had is similar to the one which I had except that I started My n series with N-90 and you with N 80

PL comapre the camera capabilities of N 86 with that one of N 82 and help me taking a final decision . Probably i will be second to join n 86 club here with you

After a heavy night out I've managed to get the N86 out and have a quick go around the phone.

I'm impressed, yes the camera button is abit stiff, but I'm sure that will disappear with excessive use. The UI is extremely fast, noticibly speedier than my N79. Web browsing for some reason is also much faster, the whole experience using the phone thus far is good.

I'll try and get out and about later and take some pictures, rev zone's done a great job so far!!!

Well, fist I must say I'm surprised with you! You can actually make post without insulting people

Those fancy features you've mentioned are maybe nice on paper, but in reality one won't benefit much from them as it raises other questions: how many faces can be recognized, people smile different way... even high end digital cameras don't adopt these features, so it's not a deal breaker for me.

But funny thing is you didn't mention anything about video recording of N86, I believe it's a bit better than C905.

Plus, don't forget that N86 is smartphone, so one extra benefit (not to name them all) is that you can use Navigation free of charge, as oppose to C905 where is Java based, meaning you need to have internet connection ON (pretty costly, especially if in roaming).

Totally agree with this "not pleasant to listen to". Just tried playing the same mp3 comparing between N86 and 6260. Guess what, 6260 sound nicer than my N82. Not only that, camera picture resolution also looks better from such a simple phone.

It would be interesting to see how N86 sound compares to N85, as I believe people didn't have complains about N85 sound quality.

But this is really disappointing, I must say.

Sorry, didn't get it what do you mean by that?

Can you post us some full size images (you can use Photobucket or Imageshack to upload) and then post links here.

And where is Moderator now, when people are insulting ME! Brightspark, what do say about this? Your reaction?

As for video recording, MIKI you should get camcorder if you want any decent quality.

So, aside from lame camera, N86 suffers from sound issues as well.

I had no intention to insult you, rather I have commended you!

Of course camcorders are way better, but here we're discussing all-in-one device that can give you pretty good images and video, at least for most users. Those hi-tech freaks will probably look elsewhere. Even Eldar said in his review that N86 is pretty good overall device, that will succeed to satisfy even demanding users, so I believe N86 is quite balanced device.

    Cheers,

I would be interested to see this compared to the Pixon 12 in camera performance in a review. Unless Samsung have dropped the ball completely I would suspect the Pixon 12 would have the edge as it seems the N86 performs at the same level overall as the i8510 & i8910, not that is any bad thing.

I believe AAS will publish soon such review (comparing with all major contenders), plus various lights condition test.

    Stoosh,
we're still waiting for those pics, mate . And give us your first hand impressions. Do you share same opinion as rev_zone regarding sound "issue"?

Finally some common sense! Nokia had almost a year to improve and release 8MP camera, yet it doesn't stand a chanse (or in worst case it's similar to) with C905 or Innov8. The question is what the hell they were doing all that time?

    1. What about speed, is it noticeably faster than N79/N85, Eldar said it's about 20% faster - do you feel this?

    2. While browsing files on memory cards (like gallery, music, images) do you have occasional slow downs?

    3. Is screen readable under direct sunlight (comparing to N79/N85)?

    4. What is your impression about this kickstand? Is it reliable or fragile? This is piece of plastic, not metal right?

    5. Sliding action: is it more difficult to slide "down" (to reveal multimedia keys, than "up" to reveal keypad. I know with N85 it was quite hard to slide down.

    Cheers,

Miki, I've posted up some pics on the N86 user thread, check them out!

Let me answer your questions for you:

    1. Compared to my N79, Yes the N86 is very noticeably faster. It flies through the menus and doesn't pause anywhere. This is apparent went using the native web browser.

    2. Im using a 8gb memory card from my N79 and again when browsing files, the thumbnails are fast, there's no pause, lag when going through the files. Again its faster than the N79. I can say without a doubt over all the S60 FP2 phones I've had a chance to use, the N86 is the fastest.

    3. The screen is not very good under direct sunlight. I took the phone out in the garden earlier and I had difficulty reading it. This is i think without a doubt the weakest point of the N86. The N79 excels under direct sunlight, here with the N86 I was straining to see the screen and it was barely legible.

    4. The kick stand is made out of the same material as the battery cover and is plastic. Yes it feels fragile to the touch, but somehow it does the job very well and doesn't feel loose or do you feel that the N86 will buckle under its own weight.

    5. The build quality of the N86 is exceptional, this is without a doubt the best built N series phone I've come across. The sliding mechanism is superb, the phone slides into place very well, there's no wobble in any direction, I feared maybe the N86 may wobble like the early N95, but there's nothing to worry about here.

The phone screams quality and is dare I say it built like an E series phone, but not quite there, if you know what I mean

All in all I think the phone is a very solid perfomer. I don't really care much for the camera, as I'm not a camera enthusiast. However this maybe the spiritual successor of the N95, some people may disagree but I think Nokia have moved in the right direction with this phone.

If you do not want a touch screen phone, and need a decent specced smart phone that ticks most of the boxes than I recommend the N86, as well as the good workhouse phone that is the N79.

That's me! Thank you for your impressions

And here are Stoosh images (so you don't need to jump back and forth):
    http://forum2.mobile-review.com/atta...7&d=1245519805 (dark room, with flash)
    http://forum2.mobile-review.com/atta...8&d=1245519842 (garden flower)

They look quite decent to me. I suppose they were taken in auto-mode, no manual adjustments. Maybe you tell us about second pic, how color reproduction is accurate?

    Cheers,
    Miki

Yes, the pic was taken in auto mode, no manual adjustments whatsoever, just point and click at the subject.

The colour reproduction is fairly accurate, when the picture was taken the sun was shining directly on the flower. The N86 has taken a fairly decent picture.

However I'm not really an expert when it comes to analysing pictures, having said that I am quite impressed by the result. That said I know that my N79 can also match the picture taken by the N86 especially in daylight conditions.

The one thing that annoys me is that the N86 camera button is extremely stiff and you really have to press down hard on the button to take a picture. This may result in the camera shaking unnecessarily and pictures being slightly blurred.

Darn! This was also reported by some users "The camera button is way way way too stiff. "But, does it make you miss that half way button press? Do you still have N79? Maybe to send us some comparison images.

Thanks Stoosh, Rev, you guys rock!

    1. how much free memory you have, RAM memory, not that 8GB storage memory (hope you know what I mean)

    2. Did you try Navigation? I'm interested how Garmin works, don't know if you have it installed yet.

    3. Do you have this SMS sending problem (waiting too long) as rev_zone described?
