Queen.
Its interesting how I very rare see the among the best rock bands, although they have sold 300 000 000 albums.
Maybe because they aren`t as controversial as Rolling Stones.
Queen is the most talented rock band ever: every member has written songs (every member had at least 1 big hit), their lead singer never had any sing practice and has a tenor voice (very rare in modern music) and it can play guitar, piano, some drums.
Plus they made hits which you can hear in every competition.

Too bad they didn`t deserved greater attention (I think thats because of the name :p ) .

Rolling Stones are the second greatest rock band- impressive music and interesting members.

Pink Floyd is an excellent talented band- though the only song I know from them is #Another Brick in the Wall#
Beatles are IMO the first boy band.

m.h, I really recommend you listen to more Pink Floyd, get something like Dark side of the Moon, good audio equipment and close your eyes...

I cant decide on a vote.

where's the velvet underground?

what the %^£$ is the beatles doing in a poll of greatest bands??? you may as well include westlife, the osmonds, or the monkees.

out of the ones listed, pink floyd or rolling stones. pink floyd were more innovative than rolling stones.

the velvets can beat that by a mile :p. 3 of the 4 founding members (all except angus mclaise, and later mo tucker) were classically trained since a young age. john cale was one of the best violaists in the world at one time, and played viola, bass, guitar, harpsichord, piano, organ, etc. lou reed played guitar and piano. sterling was classically trained on the trumpet, but played guitar and bass with the velvets.

Why is there no Led Zeppelin?

Ah I see this thread must be "who was the greatest rock band apart from Led Zeppelin" right? In that case maybe The Beatles.

for all those people wanting to vote for led zeppelin, they had a great sound and were individually uber talented, but they were packaged and artificial.

Beatles, what are they doing here :insane:.
Pink Floyd, talented, very original, great music.
Queen, well for me they deserve that name, but I am not in the mood to listen to them always, they are a little to soft for me.
The Rolling Stones, they are simply cool :super:
Led Zeppelin, i have heard that name but unfortunately not their songs (i promise i will add one new album to my car ;) )

my preferred band is naturally RAMMSTEIN(which for me is the mos potent and talented hard band) and I am always in mood to listen to them and to ride my car fast (veeery fast)

Stones - Got to be THE most over-hyped band of all times.. Have made a couple of killer tunes.. that other artists do heaps better.
Led Z - Really one of the founders of rock as we know it today. Rush (who IMO should be on the list) started out as LZ-"imitators" but later found a niche of their own.
Pink Floyd's gotta be it for me, all members awesome talents, both band and solo stuff brilliant (except IMO the first "weedy" acid trip albums in the late 60's)
Queen - great stuff but at times a bit (too) pompous..
Beatles - wine and water mixed.. they did put out some truly great stuff, but for some reason i like the lesser played tunes the best.

EDIT: Don't get me started on stairway to heaven.. that tune got played to death 25 years ago and never was THAT good to start with ;)

Gentle nod of appreciation towards Queen however.
My faves would be
Genesis
U2
AC/DC
ZZ top
Some bands develop a kind of mystical status through their early demise, which is rarely justified IMO.
