HTC Touch Pro Bridges Mobile Work With Mobile Play
Advanced 3D Touch User Interface, Desktop-like browsing, 5-row sliding QWERTY Keyboard and Window Mobile 6.1 create hybrid business phone

Taipei, Taiwan — June 4, 2008 — HTC Corp., a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today unveiled its advanced next generation business phone, the HTC Touch Pro™. Bringing a beautiful new angle to mobile business productivity, the HTC Touch Pro utilizes similar styling and functionality of the highly anticipated Touch Diamond™ and introduces a variety of business-focused enhancements that make getting work done on the go quick and easy.

“The HTC Touch Pro and Touch Diamond have created a new generation of HTC touch devices that make the promise of the one-hand, one-touch mobile Internet a reality,” said Peter Chou, president and CEO, HTC Corp. “HTC Touch Pro is for those customers that demand the ease of use and enjoyment of TouchFLO™ 3D and want the styling of the Touch Diamond but also need the powerful mobile business experience that HTC delivers.”

A New Dimension To Touch – One hand, one touch
HTC has taken a great leap forward in touch screen innovation with its 3D touch interface called TouchFLO 3D. TouchFLO 3D provides a stunningly intuitive way to zip through common tasks like messaging, calendar appointments or making calls with just one touch. Delve a little deeper to find that your music, photos, contacts and surfing the web are also responsive to the touch. In addition, the Touch Pro includes a new innovative touch-sensitive control for device interaction.

Making The Mobile Internet Useful and Fun
With the introduction of Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, HTC delivers an entirely new mobile Internet experience that utilizes broadband-like speeds with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and wireless connectivity. Committed to improving Web browsing, HTC provides a new customized mobile Web browser that enables easy viewing and effortless navigation of Websites in the way they are designed to be viewed on a PC. As part of this browsing experience users can zoom and pan Websites with one-hand and automatically view optimized content that has been specially created to fit the display. Turning the device sideways automatically rotates the web page view from a portrait to landscape view.

In addition to Web browsing, the Touch Pro includes an HTC-developed, YouTube application for watching a variety of user generated video content as well as including Google Maps for mobile for mapping and traffic data.

Unmatched Style With Complete Productivity
Like the Touch Diamond, Touch Pro is crafted with precision to fit comfortably in a user’s hand and brings together elegant touch screen response with the direct precision of HTC’s trademark sliding keyboard design. Introducing a new five-row QWERTY keyboard layout that makes typing-intensive tasks like composing email or working on Microsoft Office® documents quick and easy. Built-in TV-out functionality means users can deliver the perfect PowerPoint® presentation from the Touch Pro.

Bursting with Innovation
The Touch Pro delivers an unrivalled combination of features and functionality. The 2.8 inch display provides near-print quality viewing that enables beautiful Web browsing and viewing of photographs. The built-in camera includes an optical auto-focus lens that ensures the photos you take will be clear and consistent. Advanced wireless and auto sensor screen pivoting are just a few of the features that make the Touch Pro experience a stand out.

Availability
The HTC Touch Pro™ will be available to customers across all major European, Asian and the Middle East markets in late summer. The North American and Latin American versions of Touch Pro will be available later in 2008.

That sums up my thoughts as well :D

As the Diamond already squeezes out more than a day of its 900mAh battery apparently, I'd rather see a 15mm version of the Pro with the same smaller battery than this 18mm edition...

It's got one thing over the Diamond at least & that is according to the link the camera actually has a flash, unfortunately it doesn't say what kind of flash. Another reason I would choose it over the Diamond to add the reasons I have already listed.

I think out of this and the Diamond I would prefer this. It has a solid QWERTY aswell as more RAM. 192mb on the Diamond is good but running apps will drain more memory being a VGA screen phone I think so this is a good move.

there seems to be a flash....
and the flash being the only thing missing from the Diamond... the HTC touch pro seems like a great phone.

Agreed. 18mm are ok, but I like the arc slider on X1 more. That and the screen though are X1's only pros over this beast. UI is a huge plus for Raphael.

This is exactly what I have waited for. Business phone and multimedia device in one and with TV-out its just perfect for me. About the dimensions. Everything has it costs. Japanese phones are bigger and have better specifications than western phones but still people want them but now when we get Touch Pro you say its too much... I would rather have thicker phone with bigger battery like these than thinner with smaller battery even if it can juice the phone for 1,5 day. Consider all those good specs and you'll see that its not so big for what it offers.

just to confirm: does this have the same touch interface as the diamond when you arent using the keyboard? i'd been seriously weighing up whether to get the htc touch diamond or wait for the sony ericsson x1, but if this is just a slightly thicker version of the diamond with a keyboard, i think i have just found my next phone.

come on people stop this talking about THICK! N73 is 18mm, and its not thick at all.

Of course 18mm is not thick per se, but it's definitely on the upper end of 2008 phones. I think it looks a bit chubby, probably due the shortness...

Generalising much, hmmm? In the last year, there have been more than a few thin S60 phones...and for example the E71 is VERY thin for what it offers.

Yeah, but the N95 is 1.5 years old - back then, it was pretty much the norm.
The N96 falls in the same category as this, could/should be thinner by a couple of millimeters imho.

I would say this is related to personal preferences, so no point discussing it.
If you're used to slim/lightweight phone that fits your jeans/shirt easy then you should go for Diamond. If you like carrying your phone around your belt (holster) or in your purse, then I guess it doesn't really matter how thick/weight phone is.

Anyhow, i think dicussion should be will Touch pro be faster than Diamond (with extra memory rom) or this will be "no big deal"; Do you really need full qwerty or touch keypad will do the job; and can you live with 4GB memory comparing to card slot (more memory).

This is related to WM platform, as I understand 65k is max than WM supports at the moment. In some previews they say this will change with WM7.

I think the most important difference between the HTC Touch Pro and SE X1 will be the stability and usability of the OS. Of course we can't say anything about the X1 yet, but just looking at SE's experience with WM (zero) and SE's past releases (bugs) and looking at what a great UI HTC has created (Touch Flow 3D), I don't think buying the X1 will be a smart move.

Mweb
08-06-2008, 14:11
Quite agree with Deuxani, i have had great experiance with and of HTC devices, and see no reason to stump up possibly more cash for the SE (sic) version.

Super Chimp

Hasn't their been some indications already that the HTC device offers the better OS?

miki69
09-06-2008, 15:34
I guess the real battle will be how manufacturers will incorporate their own GUI in WM. Will "TouchFlo" have better integration with WM than SE "panels" or "TouchWiz" from Samsung. I stongly believe that this will play significant role for end buyers choosing one brand or other (beside the spec., of course).

So, I think personal preferences toward GUI will determine which way we go.

Im tempted to wait for this, as the I-mate 9502 is having problems with reading SDHC cards and ive been missing a PDA device since my Vario and HTC have decided to put a flash in at last!

seriously considering trading in my TYTN II for this when it becomes available. Looking at the HTC Website and their list of specs convinced me. The Diamond was tempting but only having 4GB internal memory kind of turned me off. According to the HTC Website, Touch Pro has a micro SD slot but only 512MB internAL MEMORY. The keyboard is an OK feature, but honestly dont use it as much as I thought I would on the TYTN II. Windows 7 would have been a nice bonus for this device, HTC says they should have it in devices come 1stQuarter of 09.

Itachi

The i900 looks great i must admit but I guess it comes down to if you want choice when typing. The good thing is you can either type on screen either with touching, or even the stylus or just slide out the keypad.

They are both very appealing to be honest but for me the Touch Pro would swing it.

One of the deciding factors for me will be the speed of the UI.

Well the Diamond looks decent now in its current state but you may have read there is a ROM update which has improved that even further. I dont think there are any vids of it in action after the ROM update but the Pro should be faster out of the box. Well thats what I have been told anyway.

Apparantly the music quality on these devices are pretty good aswell. Im not really a WM expert but ive been speaking with someone who is in the programming field and he seems to think despite not having a 3.5mm jack these 2 devices are a cut above the rest (s60 phones included) given there are 2 DSPs running together for the sound.

I have decided I will be getting the touch pro for sure as my primary device but will get something else smaller for pic. Just not decided which network brand I will go for. I want to stay with Orange but I dont want it branded heavily by the network. I still need to do some homework in that dept.

What I'd like to know is if there are profiles and caller groups in that phone.
Plus has anyone else noticed that the touch pro does not have a mirror shiny back as in the diamond, it is rather matt from the pics I saw (and sec 21-23 in the video above). that would be a big plus imo.

Itachi
22-06-2008, 20:59
They mentioned in one of the reviews that in Asia, they dont consider a phone to be of premium quality unless its glossy looking. I prefer matt aswell though as the glossy version would attract more fingerprints.

i like it when a phone is shiny and full of smudges (after a couple weeks of use with no cleaning)

it makes it look sturdy

but i also like my laptops cured with aceton to make them look like they fall apart or i also like pretty speedy sportscars but with dents in them, petrol marks under filling cap and smoke marks above exhaust

so maybe imnot really a reference :)

"While we didn't get to see the TouchFLO 3D user interface running on the Touch Pro (HTC's keeping a few things under wraps just yet), we were told that the Touch Pro will feature far better support for landscape display orientation, something that is required for a device with the Touch Pro's form factor."

I don't understand why they don't pack in the same features into the touch diamond. Of course it's about product placement but for almost 600EUR why can't they just put a LED flash in the touch diamond if they can put it in the touch pro it shouldn't be a problem.

It would suck even more if they make the touch pro faster or something. The touch diamond wouldn't be the perfect phone anymore, neither would the touch pro because i dislike keyboards.

I really love what HTC generally does with the hardware. I even like that they are trying to make Windows Mobile nicer by overlying their software layer on top to do some things....

I just simply cannot get over the simple fact that it's Windows Mobile. I've owned a few Windows Mobile devices in my time and it's all HTC's fault for making extremely nice devices. The first time I didn't know better, the second time I thought to myself "It wasn't really as bad as you remembered" only it was. The third time I thought "Last one I used was 5, it's now v6 so they must have sorted it by now", nope it's still not very good.

Maybe HTC with Google Android will be the answer. No doubt I'll consider a Windows Mobile 7 HTC device as Windows Mobile 7 looks nice but does it work properly, that's the question.

Super Chimp, you know, you might be able to get along with it in general...except for the speed...and battery life. it's completely disgusting. i thought to myself "ah, a 520mhz processor, 128mb ram, this should fly"...it didn't, it was painfully slow, almost as bad as my n73

as for battery life, my friend had it fully charged when he set out at 7.30 in the morning, he just had it switched on, no wi-fi on etc. by around 3.30 it was almost dead. yes, part of it had to be the vga screen, but with such a capcious battery, i'd except more battery life, for a phone that was doing virtually nothing for eight and a half hours.

guys, my grip with HTC Diamond is that when taking pictures and sending them by MMS, i'm forced to go to the file manger, located the file(without thumbnails) and sending them from there. Has that been fixed in the Pro, or does it use the retarded way of sending MMS from the file explorer? it honestly is a deal-breaker for me, anyone knows if they fixed it?

HTC Pro is peaking my interest.

Seems like you have had a lot of issues with the Diamond, so I am surprised your interested in the Pro.

marwan74, take a look at PocketCM ImageViewer (http://pocketcm.com/imageviewer.php). It's small, easy to use and pretty fast - and can send a picture as MMS straight from within the program. I don't know how well it works with VGA, though, but I guess you can give it a try.

yah true, but regardless, i don't see why sending mms is so backward on hi-tech WM phones. Why can't you just send pictures directly from the gallery?

and by the way, the thing that interests me in the Pro is the qwerty, typing on the Diamond from the screen i use to make tons of mistakes, which the qwerty on the Pro easily remedies.

thanks, that looks neat! i'll track down a Pro and check it out in person before deciding, it' be hella expensive since the Diamond had a hefty price, besides i also just bought the Nokia E71. i'm sure the Pro would sell for a good $1000 here in the UAE.

Sorry for digressing quite a bit off the topic!

Of late, all mobile phones started costing more than a decent laptop!

This HTC Diamond Pro, i-mate 9502, Blackberry Bold, iPhone, Nokia N96(about to be launched) etc….indulge in exorbitant pricing.

While lifecycle of a mobilephone is shorter than one year, it is outrageous to shell out so much only a year later found to be outdated!!! In some cases (as in i-mate) you don’t even have the manufacturer survive in the market for basis support services.

I am not sure whether is it a good idea to price it without committing support for 2-4 years based on the price band.

i did the unthinkable since i don't have the touch Pro yet. I went ahead about bought the Diamond to find me in till the Pro launches. I want a keyboard so badly, the onscreen key are cool, but nothing beats a sliding qwerty.

N95 8GB is only 3mm thicker, our eyes cant see the difference. But because of the diamond shaped edges, the Touch pro feels slightly thinner.

hi guys, i have the Diamond and i would like to know how am i supposed to activated the GPs on it? i clicked the DPs icon, downloaded some stuff with is valid for 6 days and then nothing! where is the map? am i supposed to use external maps with the GPS to make it function fully such as Google Maps? what other free maps i would use to incorporate with the Diamond GPS? thanks!

guys, has anyone got their hands on the Touch Pro yet? I'm dying here in anticipation fellas, expansys claims they're shipping them, should i trust them and order it online? my Diamon won't last more than 4-5 hours a day with minimum talk time, im'm getting extremely frustrated with it

http://www.expansys.ae/p.aspx?i=169424

thoughts? is expansys reputable? or do they BS?

thanks!

Well, just pulled the trigger and purchased one of these today, should have it early next week. Hoping its better screen resolution can fit the bill for my productivity needs (browsing experience and PDF/document display/editing) compared to my current N82. N82 is a fantastic phone, will remain as my "fun" phone for evenings/weekends, but right now there is no single device that covers both aspects for me. Will post up thoughts and pictures when it turns up.

Eh, doesn't bother me. Its 3mm thinner than my N95/N95 8GB, and only 1mm thicker than my current N82. Perfectly pocketable. Would love it to be thinner, obviously, but 18mm is no problem for me.

So, has any of you guys got the touch pro already?

I am interested in Ui speed - touchflo particulary, since it's used primarily. WM underneath is just to adjust settings, right? I don't mind if it lags a bit since I will set the settings and forget about it for a while.

The other thing I am interested about is the battery life.

The other thing I am interested about is the battery life.

I've had mine a couple of weeks.

TF3D out of the box is too laggy, but a couple of registry tweaks (from XDA-Developers) sorts that out. Since I made the tweaks I find its speed generally fine, only problem with lag occurs after going from landscape with the keyboard open to portrait with it shut (most pronounced after browsing in portrait). Generally I find it fine, I wish that TF3D covered WM even more though, all the productivity areas will dump you into WinMo pretty quickly, in all its finger-unfriendly-stylus-requiring badness.

Battery life has been good for me, I still charge everyday, but then I use the phone a lot - like 2 hours music player, 2 hours browsing on 3G, texting/calls, half an hour GPS use.

Best news is that so far its handling my 16GB Sandisk microSDHC just fine (even though its only Class 2).

I saw the pro 2 days ago in a shop and I must say it did not pass the durability test imo. They had it only a few days and the slider is wobbeling a bit allready :-/ Other than that it feels nice in hand.
But that slider made my decision final not to go for it and to wait for the HD.
