Nintendo Wii is still dominant with more than 20 million units sold.
Xbox has sold 17.7 million units worldwide.
Playstation 3 is still in 3rd place with more than 10 million units sold.

- The weakest but most innovative game console is still #1 and so is the Nintendo DS in handheld gaming.
- Halo 3 is the fastest and best selling game of 2007.
- Blu Ray is still not kicking in but is ahead of HD-DVD in terms of sales and support.
- HD DVD is dying. Xbox 360's HD DVD player will be rendered useless.

IMO these console "wars" seemed to be over from customer's point of view. All three consoles have sold such a big amounts that game makers will need some really hefty donations for not release their games for all the consoles (or atleast xbox360 and ps3).

In the console wars, once a game console is in 3rd place worldwide, it stays in 3rd place. The Sega Saturn never made it out of 3rd place. The Gamecube is still in 3rd place. PS3 was released 8 days ahead of the Wii and yet the wii is already miles ahead in sales. And yes the PS2 is still strong just like the PS1 is still strong even with the PS2 around but sales will eventually decrease just slowly though. It will take more than the playstation network or PSP and sony ericsson connectivity to help boost PS3 sales. Unless Sony have hundreds of killer apps or exclusives, Blu Ray sales finally beat DVD sales, and Wii supply shortages continues, they will stay in 3rd place. And Sony really need to secure exclusives, if GTA 4 is a PS3 exclusive, it would really help them against Xbox 360.

I know and that is good strategy for microsoft and one of the reason why PS3 sales are not kicking in because they lack exclusive AAA games. What is on PS3 might come out for X360 too. It is unlikely that no GTA means failure of a game console, Wii doesn't have GTA and the Wii or it sales doesn't seem to vanish. Halo series has a much bigger impact than the GTA series.

The Xbox 360 sold more units than Wii and PS3 at the time that Halo 3 was released and even now the Xbox 360 is selling more units than PS3. I don't know if you're dreaming or just lacking info but the Xbox 360 sold 7 millions units more than the PS3. Google it or check video game websites. There are currently more than 10 million units of PS3 worldwide compared to 17.7 million of Xbox 360 and 20+ million units of Wii. What does that tell you? or maybe you count backwards.

With previous GTAs rockstar wanted make the pc port the proper way (not straight port, but improved graphics). Hence the longer waiting period.

PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 for the last month and a half by about 10,000 units every week on average (There was one at 30,000 units)

Blu-Ray will become more popular this year, particularly now that HD-DVD is dead

PS3 has far more exclusive games coming out this year (and especially huuuge-name brand's like GT & MGS)

I am not sure whether the PS3 will beat the Xbox 360, but it will give it a good run before it announces defeat

So explain to me why they can't catch up to Xbox 360 sales. If PS3 is the good in outselling Xbox 360 how come it's not even close to overall worldwide sales? If PS3 is selling good, the gap in sales would be smaller like say only 2-3 million units ahead for the Xbox 360. And how come Nintendo Wii overtakes PS3 like a Mercedes SLR on top speed when they were launched at nearly the same time? The Ps3 even had a week head start against the Wii, how come the PS3 was left behind like? And why is it that Wiis are immediately sold out in most store while some stores have stocks of PS3?(and Xbox 360 for that matter). And you can't use the more than 1 year head start arguement in defense of PS3 against Xbox 360 because Wii already surpassed Xbox 360 worldwide sales despite the head start. It's just fact that the PS3 is not as appealing as the Xbox 360 and Wii despite the fact that it is more powerful and have more multimedia features.

microsoft was smart rushing their xbox... but now they have tons of problems with the dvd drives scratching discs, red ring of death, and problem with the DRM with consoles replacement... since its a pain to tranfer the drmed games.

Give it time? how much? will 3 years be good enough? PS3 should be a one hit wonder but it isn't. People are expecting it to sell more at the time of launch but it was a flop. Like I've said, it is not reasonable to use the Xbox 360 headstart as an arguement to defend PS3 because Wii overtakes that headstart and if the PS3 is that good it should've done the same, duh! :p. Sure wii is 3 times cheaper but it was original and innovative, people liked it. Most people feel that PS3 is just mere improvement of its predecessor and offers nothing new. And gamespot news have stated that microsoft is having temporary shortages in January 2008, it's one factor for decrease in sales. January isn't the only time the PS3 had a temporary sales boost, it was last year too when Nintendo suffers Wii shortages, lucky for Sony:insane: and when they had a price drop and phased out the old version, after that it was back to normal with the slow sales. I know that Xbox 360 and PS3 have been shifting places in sales last year but in such a small gap that PS3s are not selling fast enough to catch up with Xbox 360 in overall sales. And since Sony can't dish out great games and secure exclusivity of AAA games, the trend of PS3 staying in 3rd place will continue. Even before holiday 2007, fanboys already predicted that the gap between PS3 and Xbox 36o will be close but it did not happen thanks to HALO 3. If it wasn't for Wii shortages and Xbox 360 hardware problems, the sales gap may even be wider and the PS3 might be so far away it's already in vanishing point.:D Sony is lucky that Wii and Xbox 360 have those problems to deal with.

And your point is? :spy:what does your statement prove? it only proves that at the time you are at that game store there are no customers who intent on buying an Xbox. It doesn't mean that the hours or days before you arrived and after you left the store, no one bought an Xbox. And it's not as bad as PS3s sitting in store shelves anyway. I bet Sony's Jack Tretton still owes Penny arcade $13,200 from that stupid challenge he made last year about proving that PS3s sit on store shelves for a long time. Some minor things I'd like to add. Even though the PS3 beat Xbox 360 in unit sales by a small margin last January, four of the top ten best selling games that month are Xbox 360 games and only 1 on PS3http://www.gamespot.com/news/6186077.html. Call of Duty 4 Xbox version was the best selling game that month with 331,000 units. The PS3 version of Call of Duty sold 140,000 units. The xbox version sells more than the PS3 version? seems to me more people own Xbox360 than PS3s...oh wait, it is fact that ore people own Xbox 360s than PS3s:rotate:

So? just because PS3 outsold Xbox 360 in that month doesn't mean the sales won't shift next month or the month after. When Halo 3 was released, for the first time Xbox 360 outsold Wii. And for the record, Sony is much more good in deceiving consumers. Interesting indeed. Still, PS3 worldwide sales are nowhere near Xbox 360's. I do expect a sales boost for Sony PS3 because BluRay is declared by most as the winner of the format war. But I still cannot see PS3 catching up quickly to Xbox 360 because they can't secure exclusives and some developers seem to be focusing on the consoles, and Xbox 360 game versions like Call of Duty 4 outsell the PS3 version despite the fact that PS3 outsold Xbox in the same month. And delay of games is still a problem for the PS3 camp, Alone in the Dark comes out in Xbox 360 as early as march while the PS3 is due later in 2008.

Yes I know that Blu Ray is probably the winner but no official announcements yet but it is inevitable.

So, the final version of Tekken 6's graphics sucks huh? because the tech demo looks way more impressive. And why are you even dragging Assasin's Creed? we're talking about Tekken 6, Motor Storm, and Killzone not living up to the promised graphics? How do you defend that? Tekken 6 has already been released in the arcade (including in my country :D) and the fans are going gah gah!! The Tekken series is one of the sought after games and it is only exclusive in Playstation when it comes to console. I'm no GTA-like or FPS fan (I retired playing those kind of games) that's why I like PS exclusives more.

There was a planned PS3 version but Microsoft secured exclusivity of the game for Xbox 360 and Windows. That's exactly what SCEA should be doing if they want PS3 to outsell Xbox 360, they should be securing exclusivity of excellent games.

It's still beta, and how do you know that Killzone PS3's final release will look the same as that? the finalized and released Tekken 6 which was released on a PS3-powered arcade board did not look as good as the "video" they've shown in E3 2005. BTW the Tekken 6 link you posted http://youtube.com/watch?v=CyDcAyIPaXA is about the octave engine, a physics simulation engine for games not graphics. And Killzone PS3 graphics is not impressive, it doesn't look graphically above Bioshock, Halo 3, and Gears of War. It's a fanboy tactic especially if they're running out of something to say or they can no longer defend their stance, they'll just change the subject to turn the discussion into something else and forget about the unanswered questions.

Xbox 360 hardware failure rates are still worst. Xbox 36o has 16% failure rate, that's high in consumer electronics. The hardware failure rate is the main reason why Xbox 360 are having shortages last Feb and march 2006 and recently in january 2008 and the reason why some gamers chose to stay away from xbox 360. I like the xbox 360 but I will never buy one until the hardware failure problems have been resolved. If you're going to make examples using cars then the Wii as Ford Escort is very unlikely because it doesn't have innovation. - Console sales are the basis of game developer support not power. So if wii stays on top of the sales then it will be the most supported and will be very successful. COmpetitors can secure exclusives to increase sales but exclusives must be better than what the rival has to offer and must be many.

- I expect PS3 to have increase sales since HD-DVD is officially dead and Blu-ray won the format war. But Blu-Ray is not the only basis of winning the game console war, it's the availability of games. People buy the game console with the most excellent games and price is not an issue as long as the games are worth every penny. For now, people enjoy the Wii because of its innovation, the Wii-mote and its unique games. Xbox 360 and PS3 is in a heated battle for 2nd place. IMO, if Microsoft can solve the hardware failure issues of the Xbox 360, I think they can stay in 2nd place since they have a good lineup of exclusives as well as multi-platform games, if not, PS3 might take their place as early as next year. That's just my opinion because PS3 still has some appeal to the ordinary consumers and powerful support from fanboys.

That's because Nintendo is good at making games compared to the other 3rd party developers. The fact that Wii exclusive games are capable of outselling other games is proof, add to that the fact that Wii is outselling both PS3 and Xbox 360 worldwide by just their 1st party games alone cements Nintendo's excellence in game developing. The Wii does get exclusives like Soul Calibur Legends and RE umbrella Chronicles but it was the 3rd party developers fault that they make these games instead of high profile multi platform games that are also releaed on PS3 and Xbox 360.

I know about the six axis controller and no body seems to care about it especially the first generation without any rumble/vibration functions. And who cares about the headtracking capability or the playstation eye? it's good concept but what about implementation? do gamers need to wait 3 years? They should refine the Playstation Network instead. And what good is headtracking capability if gameplay won't be fun? and headtracking or whatever won't even help you stay fit or become fit like the Wii Fit can? :lol:

I felt like joining the console ranting, so without further ado :p

The games for the Nintendo consoles are basically only Nintendo games. 3rd party developers have a very hard time to get in. Cause most people who buy a Nintendo console only look out for the Nintendo games, be it Mario, Zelda, Metroid or whatever.

I don't have a Wii yet, but I do have a GameCube, and I pretty much only got Nintendo games for it (which I enjoy greatly btw). My friends who got a Wii, they only have Nintendo games for it aswell.

So despite the huge success of the Wii, it doesn't seem to me like it's a good choice for a 3rd party developer. Then again, the development costs of a Wii game is noticeable lower than developing a 360/PS3 game, so maybe it evens out.

I also read recently that Wii owners in average buy very few games (sorry don't remember the source URL), and the few they buy is most likely Nintendo stuff. Highest was the 360. So it's a much friendlier platform for 3rd party developers.

It used to be different, back in the NES/SNES days, and it's different on GameBoy/DS, but since N64 the Nintendo consoles has all been about Nintendo games.

But Nintendo did a very clever move when they just spiced up the GC hardware and gave it new controller, while MS and Sony spent lots of money to focus on the hardware and then had to sell their machines at loss to get people to buy them. Nintendo never did that, and been going with profit all the way. They just focused on the controller and the gameplay, instead of joining the graphic race, and I applaud them for that. Gameplay is so much more important than shiny pixel shader graphics.

Consoles shouldn't be big bulky machines with fans in them. They should be small and quiet, yet giving an enjoyable game experience. My last fanless quite console is the PS1 and I feel the direction has gone in a very wrong direction here.

As for the PS3, the potential is certainly there with upcoming games like White Knight Chronicles. Only problem is that there's an extreme lack of games right now. I'm very interested in JRPG games, and I suppose a good amount of those will appear on the PS3 eventually, but right now I don't really see any reason to get a PS3. Oh, and I'm also totally peeved that they cut out the backwards compability. Very weak. In any case, it's better to just wait until the games are there, and by then the console will obviously be cheaper too. In time there will be more energy-efficient models out too (lower heat, less fan noise, lower electricity bill) so yay for that.

The Wii use about 18 Watts. The original 360 and PS3 models are about 10x as much. Again, here I feel that Nintendo certainly did the right move.

The 360 got pretty much the same problem for me as the PS3. As did the original Xbox. The lack of interesting games. During the 4 years of the original Xbox, there's one exclusive game I'm enjoying, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and that's it, that's bad. It should be mentioned that I do play on the PC, so games like Morrowind, KOTOR, Thief: Deadly Shadows and others are games I played on the PC instead, or on the PS2 in some cases. The 360 seems to be going the same route for me. Now after 2+ years the only game that got my interest is the recently released Lost Odyssey which I tried briefly at a friends place last weekend. Well, there was Mass Effect too, but it's coming for PC soon. In any case, one game is not a good thing. I didn't buy my PS2 until late 2003 when I felt it had a strong game library (I bought 12 PS2 games for it right away). That said, the 360 is an excellent machine if one don't game on the PC or is interested in shooters like Halo. And don't care about that blasted RROD.

If I had to buy one of the current consoles today, I would go for Wii. Wii Sports is a great deal of fun, especially after some beers with friends, and I would like to play thru Metroid Prime 3, and look forward to Super Smash Brawl. Not much, but it's still stronger what the other offer at the moment. At least, that's what I think :p

So yeah, I will probably end up with a Wii and PS3 eventually, and a 360 isn't that likely unless they manage to pull out several games that catch my interest, but I doubt that.

Thats quite interesting. Though it does raise a few eyebrows considering that Sony didn't release any big name exclusives in 2007 for the PS3, though the PSP might be the reason behind SCEA's success.

This is bit of old news, but it shows quite well the ratio of interesting games for each console. Average 360 user buys almost twice the amount of games games than an average PS3 or Wii user. That's a big difference and somewhat shows the biggest problems with PS3 and Wii on the gaming front. You have to remember in console business the money usually comes from games not from consoles (which are usually sold without profit or even for loss).

* Xbox 360: hardware to software ratio: 6.59 (hardware total sold = 6.8 million; software total sold = 44.8 million)
* PlayStation 3: hardware to software ratio: 3.58 (hardware total sold = 1.9 million; software total sold = 6.8 million)
