What is the best Audio player for WM?

Depends on your needs. I can list a few you can check out:

Windows Media Player (obivous)
CorePlayer (not free)
TCPMP (free - almost the same as CorePlayer)
PocketMelody (very simple with album art)
PocketMusic (both free and not free versions, I think)

I would need something for WM6 smartphone but it does not need to be free if the audio quality is superb. WMP sound quality is good but I think I am becoming an audiophile, lol

Which one you think has the upper hand in sound quality?

Haven't really tested the sound quality (I usually just use the half-bad earphones that comes with the phone anyway), but I would suggest a program that has equalizer. For that, try out TCPMP as it's fairly advanced (including equalizer) and is free.

You can get SRS WoW for your phone now, makes any audio player sound good

I read in the wikipedia that the Core player and TCPMP are completely different players; is that correct?

hoba7777, I wouldn't say that. As far as I know TCPMP was the original version. Later it turned into CorePlayer while TCPMP was still being developed, so the two programs are similar (both not identical).
