ok now i FINALLY got my sonyericsson P1i!!
thank you guys for helping me decide! :)
i have a bunch of questions here: :P
1) How long do i need charge the phone for the first time?
2) the unit that i got did not come with a coupon which will give you access to a website where you can download the softwares for free. But the weird thing is when i looked at the box there is a sticker that says it comes with a $150 worth of online software. The sonyericsson staff said that there is really no coupon that comes with it but the box says there should be.
3) how do i sync the phone with my Mac? the cd i think only works with windows(i havent tried it though)
4) i tried the camera, and i dont know how to set it at 3mp? i can only select VGA, 1mp and 2mp because the 3mp is greyed-out
5) there is also the green tint on the right side of the camera (or images taken by the camera) why is that so? is my p1's camera defective?
5) whats the latest firmware?

Let the phone charge till its full! I'm not sure about the coupon, mine didn't come with anything.
As for the camera, you have it in Video mode, thats why you cant change the resolution. press still or on the video icon than you can change the resolution to 3.2 mp. there is also a fine/economy quality setting.
I dont seem to have the green tint problem, although sincce its been talked about so much I force my self to see some green tint on the right side. it might be a cmos problem.
I havent updated my firmware for a while so cant help you with that!

how do i know if its already full? im charging it right now and there is a red light and the screen is turned into white with the battery icon showing that its charging...( i drained the battery first before i charged it)
also, the camera seems to be kinda slow. when i press it halfway(focusing) it takes around 5 seconds before it focuses(when the "locked" message appears)
when i press it fully it takes 2-3 seconds before it takes the picture so i ended up with blurred images.
i also do not notice the lens to focus (unlike the k800 and p990 where you can actually see and feel that the lens is moving or focusing on the subject)
lastly, how do i surf the net using the wlan? i cant find the opera mini browser

I always have the phone on when charging it ( on the dock) and I can see from the battery indicator when its full . I'm guessing you have it turned off and charging it since your saying the screen is white.
The camera isn't super fast, but 5-6 seconds seems too long. An update would solve that by a couple seconds. I've got some great pics from the camera, take a look here: http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=17123&page=82

Make sure you have autofocus turned on in the settings. I dont feel the lens focusing like my other ones either.
To use Wlan, you go to control panel--->connections---->wlan, you run a scan, you choose the network you want to connect to and press connect, you enter WEP key if any. than your good too go. Next time you want to connect to it you dont even have to run a scan, as long as you have wifi on when ever you press on the web icon it automaticly connects to the network,
The default browser is Opera 8 or something for UIQ pre installed (The globe icon, or the shortcut button on the side). Through that you can go on the web and search for opera mini 4 and download it and install it if you wish.

congratulations on your new phone!
as you were charging your phone with the power off, you will know that it's fully charged when the LED turns from red to green, although i'm sure you found that out by now! :)
the standard browser is an Opera browser. to get opera mini, you can download it from the opera website for free.
to surf via WLAN, from the standby scren, click More\Connections\WLAN, enable WLAN, scan for any access points and/or input security and configuration settings for the access point if necessary, connect to it, then voila, you're online!
the green tint on my camera is really noticeable...is it normal or should i bring it to the service center?
also can you post your firmware version...??

SE Replaces the ones with the green tint problem ( Look on Esato). So if it shows up on teh pictures take it and see what they will do.
My Firmware is also R9H004, updated about 2 months ago. Not sure what the latest is but if you run it through SEUS it'll tell you if a new one is available or not. Dont forget a back up before you run the update though.

u can download the mac version of pc suite from sony ericsson's website...

charge it using a plug and not USB, and it should reach 100%

there is no way... maybe after opera released their web browser with flash player 8 support...

you can watch youtube on the P1. there is a long thread about it on Esato. no problems on 3G, but over wifi you need to configure your router somehow.

the inbuilt one should play mp4 fine.
you could also try a divx player app.
You can use DIVX Player. its free and it works like a charm.
the divx player doesnt recognize some of the format and whenever i would play mp4 it would have an error and a message something like "kernel error" would always appear. How do i make it play properly?
well the one I have which I believe i downloaded from the divx itself, has never crashed and plays all my dvd ripped movies. So I dont know what to suggest other than the file is corupt or uses some special sort of audio or video coding that the player doesnt supprt.
what program do you use to rip the dvd?

besides, in sites like this there is alot of divx, avi, etc already properly encoded to run on a UIQ3 phone with the divx player, smartmovie, core play, mplayer, etc

i was able to finally run divx videos on the phone, but the only problem is after a while the screen dims and turns off(stoping the video from playing as well) how do i prevent this from happening?

thats great. what did you end up using?
one thing i notice, when i encode the movie at high quality(ex. when i choose the setting "same quality as the source") the playback on the phone gets choppy or it skips (like it displays frame by frame). can the p1 play high quality videos? or do i just need to settle for a lower quality?

HI! Friends, I'm using a P1i and it looks ok, but for me there's a problem about the music player in p1i, the problem is speaker sound is very low and movies cannot view on full screen, so is there any way that i could solve my problems.

try to preset an EQ to maximum. u will see great improvement!
about movies i don't know! we need a p1i hardcore user here!
i know of free ware to enable full screen video in phones like 7610. isnt the p1 symbian too? so you will be able to find one.

it could be that the volume your mp3's are encoded at is a bit low because my speaker volume is quite loud if i turn it up all the way. you may try boosting the file's volume on your PC then resend it to the phone.
as far as fullscreen video is concerned, just click on More/Expand to watch it full screen, or even easier, while the video is playing, just tap on the screen ;)
you shouldnīt do that...i think you donīt really undestand how encoding for a phone sould be done...DO NOT use "same quality as the source" without knowing what bitrate was used...for a mobile phone like the P1 and similar, 300kbs-400kbs bitrate and 30-25fps is enough, and will show great quality...if you convert a full hd divx video without reducing the bitrate, you will of course get choppy video playing (and a much much bigger file)

I am useing P1i. i install to my PC My Phone Explorer when i connect to phone through USB and connect a divice i am geting this error message only for contacts and organizer other all can view. any one can help me?

First off, it has never been dropped by me to rule out any physical damage. The same can be said about moisture.
However, today, I made a phone call, ended the call and the phone suddenly went blank and started to vibrate nonstop before turning off. When I tried to turn it back on, nothing would show on the screen, but it would vibrate continuously then stop.
I removed the battery and SIM replaced, nothing. I came home, plugged in the charger, same vibration, no screen. Plugged in the USB cable, it vibrates continuously with the keypads lit. Plug it out, it vibrates still with keypad lit and then stop.
In addition, I would uninstall certain apps/games from my M2 card and restart the phone and when I start up, it's asking me to reinstall these apps/games. I would just click on the close button to exit that dialog box. Not sure if my actions had anything to do with it, but just stating everything here.
I bought this phone online, shipped to family in the U.S. then it was brought to me here in Jamaica. So guys sending it back to Plemix.com (even after flashing with XS++ from HK FW to WG1 and updating to new FW) is not an option.
Any ideas what is happening with my phone guys? Is it now totally useless? Before I consider taking it to a local technician I want to know if there is anything I can do. I've done all I could think of. I got my P1 on January 8, not one month yet. The only issue I realized was that now and then it would "restart to improve performance".
Someone please help me...this is depressing. Was even considering putting it up for sale IF/WHEN this issue is fixed.

UPDATE. I tried anyway and I reinstalled the firmware (though I wasn't seeing anything and the phone was vibrating like crazy). Took battery out after, turned the phone on and VOILA! Back in business!!!!!!!!!! It wiped out all personalisation but all my things were on my M2 card anyway that I took out so now back to normal! LOL may keep it yet...Thank you.
I have a P1i and am running it on an Orange contract. I can access all the facilities except MMS messaging. I have contacted Orange but as they do not supply the Pee one they are no help. Does anyone know how I can set it up for MMS? :confused:

None of them worked. :insane:
Looks like I will have to change my phone or hope that Orange get around to including the P1i in their range. :confused:
I have used an HTC Advantage and whatever sim card is inserted it sets the phone up for all services on that network. :)
Why don't Sony incorporate that? :-/
Updated TOday.
What I noticed so far:
Phone is noticeably faster, no lag whatsoever.
-Text messaging application super stable, super fast switching between inbox and sent, no more flickers and bugs
-Camera application is the major improvement IMO, much much faster.
-Autofocus doesn't lag any more, focues instantly, Now I actually physically feel the phone focusing
-Camera zoom is now very smooth and more responsive.
Thats what i noticed in the first few minutes so far. I'm intreseted to see what others think. Best update ever IMO.

before the update the green tint did show on the phones LCD, But i dont quite seem to see it anymore. I'll take a couple of pictures and check it out.
the green tint on mine wasn't really serious though in the first place.
I just checked on esato. Its still there in all its glory. :-( Im not even going to bother updating mine, ill be selling it soon.

Why sell it? Update it and you'll change your mind. Its like i just got a brand new phone. Im really surprised how the speed of the UI has improved.

Just downloaded Google maps 2.0.5 for UIO 3.0. The latest update included great navigation and zoom control and most importanly My Location.

you should do it on the pc, by accessing the memory card...its much more simple

If you open the internet- accounts->the MMS account.. does it say something like [#MODELNAME#] and so on in the logon details? Because if so they are purposely locking out specific models from their network.. What a strange idea...
Btw - I just figured out how to get the push- mail to work automatically :insane: I have to have the gprs connected (or set to auto in the settings). And not set to "CS only" to save battery, like I had.. :mad: Seriously, how was I supposed to guess that, when the phone connects just fine via gprs anyway, when ny other program wants to connect?

I have had a look but as I have 4 Orange MMS accounts in there I don't know which one is the one being used. :confused:
I neglected to delete the ones that didn't work so that's why I have 4. :o
I have looked at each of them and non of them have MODELNAME or anything like that. :)
That's even more strange.. This isn't critical, you know :p.. but what does it say on the settings?

I am a fan of Sony Ericsson but the headphones connector is dire. I have lost count of the times that it has come slightly adrift and my music listening has come to an abrupt halt.
Why did they stop using a jack plug? Jack plugs have worked well for eons so why?
I have a top of the range phone with the phones connector held in with a rubber band. :confused:

very decent, front is brushed aluminum, very solid, back panel is painted plastic to match the brushed aluminum. the phone doesn't squeaks, my only concern is the battery cover which feels a bit loose, other than that its pretty solid.

divooneh23, thanks for the fast response...had the chance to play with that solid QWERTY smartphone, liked the QWERTY :)..and liked it being monoblock..no sliders, no flips...just solid!

SuccessCre8or, Yeap, pretty solid. I paid $550 for mine when it was first released. Now I can get one for $430 unlocked and Unbranded. $580 is ridiculous!!, look on ebay or online if you can.

1) When it is set on silent mode the alarm does not ring...i thought that was pretty odd since on all other SE phones the alarm does sound when on silent mode or when its off (didn't try it with the phone off)
2) the other day i got 7 messages and the phone didn't ring, didnt show the little msg icon at the top, and the LED light on the side wasn't blinking
3) froze once, and restarted itself no less than 2 times.
4) oh and no code memo!

1)Yes unlike other SE phones the alarm doesn't ring when on silent. The alarm would not ring at all if turned off. Its a smart phone and unlike other SE phones the alarm can not be set off unless the phone is booted.
2) Thats unusual, never heard of that problem, but i do recommend performing a software update using SEUS, the latest firmware is very stable and will fix any crashing issues(3)
4) nope, there is an application called handysafe though
