View Full Version : Best headphones (noise-canceling)
Hi - i've browsed several forums & review sites (including Amazon) for the best pair of sub$300 noise canceling headphones.
Its very confusing as Bose's QC2s appear to break/flake very soon or Audio Technica's leakage of sound is apparently terrible so that someone in the next room can hear the sound vs. Sennheisers where the noise cancelling unit is clumsy & bulky.
Guys - this is one forum's opinions i trust - and although it may not be the best forum to ask about headphones, I'll still respect whatever your experiences suggest.
Basically i'm looking at the following noise-cancelling on/around-ear headphones to use with my N95-8GB:
- Bose QC2 or QC3
- Audio Technica NC7
- Sony NC6
- Sennheiser PXC 250
- Panasonic RHPC 300
Any comments would be useful. Thx
Hello? anybody got a reply to this one? Thx
haven't used any of these, try to search for reviews
shethsa,I have used the Bose QC3 with the N95 8GB and it rocks.Bose is the best in sound quality.

erazer007,everybody hates bose for its sound quality! i was searching for headphones myself.
shethsa, if you want really good noise cancelling headphones, you can check out the creative aurvana x-fi headphones (whats good about them is the x-fi crystalizer,so because you're hearing music from n95 8gb,it will ehance the quality! :)),or if you want portable headphones, you can get in-ear headphones like the m-audio ie20 xb! or the shure se420 or definitely se530 if you can afford it! :)
Thanks everyone.
I think I'll go with the ones Ramintop has suggested - Creative Aurvana X-Fi - they look better than the Bose QC3s.

Yes I have tried the QC3 on the n81.The sound is same through the n95 8gb and n81 8gb while using it.Its really good.
Although Creative Aurvana's XFis sound good, i've heard good things about the Jabra C280s - at a quarter of the price - pretty much on par with QC2s. Lets see when i get my hands on both.
shethsa try outthe qc3 you will love it.

I have both. The difference is quite discernable.
The E5C has deeper bass, a more natural extended treble and smoother mids. It's expected just by the price difference. Looking at the specs, having 2 drivers in each earphone and the overall build quality and materials used should have a sizable impact on the sound quality.
erazer007 - i idid try out both QC2 and QC3 - the problem is that it wont work without switching on - which means if battery dead, no sound. Also, its too costly - and finally i've heard bad things about pieces breaking off after a short while - horrifying for a Bose!
I'm in Singapore/HK next week - Can anybody suggest which are the best places/stores to try and buy these brands - Bose, Jabra, Creative, Sennheiser, Audio Technica?

CBS lives in Singapore.PM him.
chickenbackside - hi. I've PM'd you. Would apprecuate any help.
No one has mentioned cost, even if a headphone is the best thing since sliced bread if the cost is prohibitive no one will buy it. Does anyone have the prices?
Luddite,
Per my sources in India (with import duty loaded on),
(exch rate US$1 = Rs40, approx)
Bose QC3 are Rs21000
Bose QC2 are Rs16000
Jabra c820s are Rs11000

My budget is whatever I can get past my wife without her noticing! Truth is, I can't find any A2DP noise cancelling. Maybe you could point me in the right direction. Cheapest and most expensive will be considered!

i just did a review on Creative's Aurvana X-Fi noise cancelling headphones. This may be applicable to you:
http://meandmyphones.blogspot.com/2008/02/creative-aurvana-x-fi.html
Thanks all for your help - I finally bought the Creative Aurvana x-fi from Singapore. Its my first noise-canceling pair - and i'm happy with what little i've used them on my flight back home.
chickenbackside - i didn't find them at Sim Lim but got them finally from the Creative shop at Plaza Singapura at Dhoby Ghaut. Also checked out your review - pretty interesting, although i'm really an amateur listener. But i did pick up a nice 2-line Panasonic cordless phone from Sim Lim about 30% cheaper than at Changi.
I also saw the Jabra c820s at Changi as i did the Audio Technicas.
I'm a believer in Amazon's user reviews now - great site for authentic and extensive user feedback on many products.
But does the Aurvana have rechargable batteries? If not its bad.
actually, the set they provide you lasts quite long (i forget how much, but about 40-50hrs) with noise-cancelling on. But if you put on x-fi & the other stuff, its about 9 hrs - still pretty decent.
And the best part - it will work without batteries as well - at least the music doesn't stop, like the Bose

That is good and 40 is really good.9 is descent. But if this was rechargable,I would have got it.How much does it cost?
US$350 - cheaper than the QC3s
US$350 - cheaper than the QC3s
Yes .Good.I might think of buying one.
just an update for those interested -
my Creative Aurvana x-fi's are great after 2 weeks of use - superb noise cancelation - especially for use in office (cuts out a lot of the useless office chatter and the background hum)
Can anyone suggest if these headphones also boost sound volume on N95 8gb ?
Basically, I don't have a problem with N95 8gb sound quality, but the max volume is simply insufficient (about 60% of N91 - that's really poor)

I dont even need 50%vol.Dude more than n95 8gb at 100% is too much.Your ears will burst.
olmir
boost compared to what?
As erazer007 said, the volume is more than enough on the phone itself if you play through these headphones at about 60-70%. Plus the headphones themselves have a volume control - you dont need the highest level at all.

Compared to N91, of course.
I don't think my N95 8g unit is deffective. I tried other units also, and the output strength was nowhere near N91 with deffault headphones (as I said, N95 8g was around 50-60% of max output volume of N91, that's rather meagre for a high end multimedia model like N95, don't you think ?)
I don't even think N95 8g is louder than 6110 Navi...they are pretty much the same in output volume, which is dissapointing IMO. The difference is very subtle
