View Full Version : HTC Touch Cruise
For the first time ive found myself wanting a HTC device. It looks very cool from this vid, what do you think?

Well, it's HTC's latest all-in-one device. The specifications are impressive and the size is pretty reasonable. Judging by the pictures I'm not too keen on the design, though.
Yeah it's artermis with front cam and still ugly
Besides QVGA screen and no keypad it has got everything you could want (if you can live with 3 megapixel camera :p) and I think it will look better when you see it in real life. HTC devices tend to have very good build quality and with a thickness of less than 16 mm I think it will feel okay when you hold it. Personally I'm swaying more towards LG KS20 though - a little lighter on features, but also a bit smaller and with (in my opinion based on photos) nicer design :)
What's most amazing about this is it's quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA, besides also having Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS - a true frequency bonanza. Besides HTC's own TyTN II (Kaiser), I don't think there is anything on the market with that kind of connectivity.
how much do you think it will be sim free?

any ideas on price?
I would say about the same level as N95 8GB, maybe a little cheaper - ~£450-£500.
Would you say the touch cruise is as good or better than the tytn2?
I real live a great device.. good successor for the Artemis! Really nice device to do GPS navigation on and have the touch system!

in case no one read Eldar's review, here is it:

i'm stuck in deciding which one to choose... the tytn II or the touch cruise...
other than with and without keyboard... which is the the better choice?
If you are not heavy on messaging (as I'm not) I'd never choose a physical QWERTY keyboard at the price of extra 60 grams. Besides, Cruise has better TouchFlo implementation than Tytn II and is a little bit smaller. If it's some 100 € cheaper besides that, I'm sold.

WTF! HTC Tom Cruise?!:D
Touch Cruise and TyTN are more or less completely equal hardware-wise (not counting the form factor). Same chip set, RAM/ROM, etc.
However, TyTN is a bit thicker (19 mm vs. 15.8 mm) and heavier (190 g vs. 130 g) and have a full qwerty keyboard. Touch Cruise have the Bio Touch screen (hard flush surface) which should make it more durable and better for navigation using your finger. It also has the Touch Cube (I think it's called), which TyTN II lacks (it can be installed, though).
If you're not a heavy texter, I would definitely opt for Touch Cruise. The on-screen numeric keyboard (which should be installed, else it can be installed manually) should be good enough for shorter text entries.
oh i see... but I'm can be heavy texter sometimes... so should I go for touch cruise? anyone know when is the availability of the touch cruise?
oTaRu, Touch Cruise is slated for a release sometime this month. I've read they found a major bug in the ROM, which is being fixed at the moment, so maybe it has been delayed a bit, but I'm not sure about that.
oh I see... I thought I had read wrongly regarding the issue that it will release this month before Christmas... But I think it wont be releasing this year...
The touch cruise looks good.
Does anyone know where I can get a whitepaper for this device? I saw a vid on youtube of this phone playing a div x encoded video and would like to know what other formats it allows. It really looks like a great device.
bavlondon, I think you should install a third party program for videos if you're going to use it for that. I don't exactly know which formats Windows Media Player supports, but I actually doubt DivX is one of them.
The free TCPMP supports a lot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Core_Pocket_Media_Player
By the way, there have been some issues regarding video playback on the new devices with the Qualcomm MSM7200 chip set (TyTN II, Touch Dual, Touch Cruise). It is somehow driver- or program-related, but I think it's about to get fixed with some of the newest program releases.

Thanks bavlondon.
My last post was made on my Cruise. It's funny to browse the Web in situation of mobility...but I'm better here, on my computer and his 19" screen, to post :).
It's the third WM phone I try.
The first was a Qtek 9090 and the second a Qtek S200.
I didn't like these devices.
9090 was big, heavy and WM 2003 sucks :insane:
S200 was a better Pda but not a better phone.
Cruise is small, light and well made.
It's fast, Ram is good. I don't have any problem to open many applications at the same time. Gps runs pretty faster like a PNA not like a N95 :D. Wifi is good.
I've heard about any issues regarding the touch screen. I can't compare with others phones but for me screen is OK.
I love the wheel on the bottom because, imho, a touch screen is good but I need hard keys in a few cases.
Battery life seems to be good but it's too early to say it for sure.
Well, it's really strange for me to say that (I'm a old Palm OS user) but I'm happy with my WM device.

I have had quite a few .. 20 or so PPC, Smartphones, Palms Treo's etc. in the last three years.
I ordered the HTC Cruise.. The box felt pretty weighty and substantial.
The packing was top notch.. there sat My Brand New HTC .
My Infatuation ended there.
Very disappointed.. For those who feel that the HTC is a well built quality phone.. shame on you! It is of cheap lightweight plastic and fake metals, with inferior plastics on the screen.. (see later)
I judge and compare "quality" to my Motorola V9 AWSOME METAL AND GLASS, a Palm TX great build, a Motorola Smartphone, yes the Iphone awsome build qualities.. this HTC Cruise at nearly $800.00 USD is made of cheap flimsy plastic.. The rear battery door /cover is so thin and cheap it is actually flexible.. the little tabs are bound to break off. I felt I needed kid gloves to handle it. it's a joke really but I digress.
Software: horrible. The finger taps and presses are inaccurate at best, let's be honest.. if the top dog (iphone is setting the standard (which they are) for finger control devices.. at least the competiton should be close.. in my estimation the HTC Cruise is a distant second. The virtual keyboard is confusing, and illogical as well as inaccurate.
The OS runs slow. The GPS did not lock on very quickly for me in a 3g clear, sky.
The phone speaker was par for the course , the handsfree speaker was lousy at this price point.
For $800.00 , I expected a MUCH better build quality and function at least as well as an iphone... again,,,... for this money, if it were $399.00 I would not complain... let me remind you again, It's an $800.00 phone, it should work, look and be built like a tank...
Thanks bavlondon.

I have now this Cruise for more than a month and I'm happy with it, as at the first day :p.
Of course, IMHO, Palm OS is better than WM, Camera is better on Nokia, MP3 player sounds better on S-E and Iphone display is bigger... but I need just a phone, not 3 or 4 :).

So any more feedback? I'm flirting with the idea of getting this thing :)
I have it for a month now and it's a mixed love/hate feeling. Hardware is lovable. It's amazing they squeezed all that into such a pocketable device. GPS with Garmin works like a charm. Software is abundant. What I hate most is Windows Mobile. It's the worst phone I've ever had. I hate it. This device deserves a better software.
In the end - would I buy it again? Yes.
