Hello!

I just got my brand new HTC Kaiser yesterday. And I have to admit, I love it. I'm just wondering, where can I adjust the frame rate of the captured videos?

Please post your experiences as well.

how is the cam quality? how is the sliding mechanism?? is it good?

The device takes decent still images in good lightning. The sliding mechanism is very good, feels solid and the spring-mechanism really ease the opening of the device. The tilting screen is extremely useful. :)

I attached a sample picture but i had to resize it because it had too large file size for this forum.

And, to continue my complaining about the video capture:
If I take a clip with the frontal video call camera the fps is higher, around 12-15, which is better but still not good enough. And I thought this device would be able to record QVGA@30fps... :-/

I noticed some strange things when I took a video clip (using the main camera).
When you watch the attached clip, you notice how fast the fps increases when I open the open office.

What could cause this? Is it the lightning? I can't figure out what else it could be..

It looks like it's the light. Have you tried video recording outdoors? I guess that should make the FPS higher with the larger amount of light.

I have to try that some time.. It would be shame if the device isn't able to take proper indoor-videos.. :-/

It's still a shame I can't take good videos indoors :(

Collected my phone from the post office on Saturday. First this I have to say is: is the box big enough?

Setup was a breeze, left it charging overnight and it is now up and running. I'm liking the htc home plugin with the large clock and all the shortcuts. Activesysnc is the same as it ever was.
I have connected it to my wifi with no issues, web surfing was great over wifi.
It does look like I don't live in an area with HSPDA cover as the best I seem to get is 3G (yes I have enabled HSPDA...)

My next things to do are:
a) figure out how to get the gps working
b) find a case
c) get some custom skins
d) find out how much the home screen weather thing cost for data transfer.

Just waiting for my 4GB mem card to arrive so I can start loading stuff onto it.

Larac, congratulations with your new phone! Be sure to find all sorts of good 3rd party applications for it - that's what Windows Mobile is all about :p

Do you have any recomendations?

Do you have any recomendations?

PocketCM has some good ones: http://www.pocketcm.com/

From XDA-Developers I can find a few:

SmileySMS - display smilies in your texts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328363

PIM Backup - make backup of your SMS'es, call history, etc.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705

Touch Commander looks like a good one, too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344006

S2U2 - unlock with a slide like on iPhone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343256

There are also a couple of 3D cubes like you know from HTC Touch. Take a look yourself at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260

Be sure to read what's written about them! Some of the things are in test and can be buggy, so make sure you know what you are doing before installing :)

Thanks for the linkage.

Finally realised that it doesn't come with the gps pre-installed. Have to do it yourself. A bit anoying.

Now having read those forums, I'm wondering how long I can hold off before I have to flash the ROM with one of the custom touchflo cube jobs.

I think it's a bit rude to do it wintin the first week ;)

MTM
14-11-2007, 12:56
chokia, no problem :)

Larac, yes, I know what you mean. That's why I like Windows Mobile phones. So many opportunities to customize and flash (and reflash :D) new ROMs to them. You just have to get a phone with decent hardware (like your TyTN II) and then you can basically do with it what you want.

I've had mine for about 3 weeks. Last weekend it decided to die on me for no reason. The left LED is solid red and it won't come back no matter what I do (hard/soft reset, left it unplugged w/o battery for a day) etc.

When it was working the good things were:

HSDPA

GPS

Bad:

No zoom when taking photos
Video not very smooth for recording/playback.

It's a good phone but my n93 kicks its butt in video recording/playback. And the only real difference besides interface/specs is the GPS. Otherwise my n93 can keep up with it in the other areas.

i got mine last week, but i think im going to return it!

my last phone was an N73..so things were quite simple...with the TYTN 2..theres just so many things, or TOO many things i could do...and i just dont think i would use them enough to justify having such a great piece of equipment!

also its quite fragile so i would need a case for it of some sort...but that would make quick things like checking the time a pain, which i do a lot, and quickly making a call. I thought it would be cool to have the internet etc, but after browsing on it, browsing internet on a phone in general SUCKS, theres no way i could browse for a long time...only if i needed to check emails, or see the latest football score, it would be ok..and for that can use any phone really..

so think im gona get the N82 instead

the most annoying thing is the numeric keypad. let's say you're calling customer service for something and you have to wait for the prompts, the screen turns off depending on your settings and the prompt between you selecting the right number. by the time you get the screen back with the keypad or the flip open (very inconvenient) you missed the chance to enter the number and have to start over again.

as for web-browsing. i installed opera browser and now it's not as annoying anymore.

but the gps is superfast, much better than my mio p550. and it works with all the programs i've tried (yahoo go, google maps, smart2go, and windows live search) and once you have HSPDA, you will be supercrabby when you have to go back to 3G. but anyway i hope to get it back fast after i send it back for repair.

Another slight black mark from me, the headset is just absolute rubbish. I've never heard anything so tinny in my life.

Just ordered a mini-usb to 3.5mm converter.

I got my TYTN II the other day after waiting 2 months to find one here in the kingdom. So far I have found it to do everything it says it can. The only issue I have is that there was no GPS software at all included. I thought TOMTOM was supposed to at least be on the disks in the box. Even HTC's website says that GPS Software is included. I contacted HTC and have yet to hear back from them on this.

Unfortunatley TomTom does not have Middle East Maps yet. Are there any other mapsets that will work with TomTom software? I have used other software and have found TomTom to be most user friendly and would prefer to use it if possible, that is if I can find a compatible map set. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

I am seriously thinking about upgrading from the E90 to the tytn 2.

But i would like some questions answered if possible.

1- Most important (i think its yes,but i want it confirmed), Will it run Tom Tom 6 ? (and can you hook it up to tom tom home and update it like a "real" tom tom ?
2- Can you receive a phone call and go back to a fully working tom tom while in a phone call ?
3 - i suppose that when u get an sms while in tom tom it's like the old tytn .. it fades in and back out ?
4 - what is the maximum micro sd capacity it will take ?
5 - does it feel strong when the screen is "up" (because i'll want to buy a car holder that allows for it to be "up" like that .. but due to car vibration n stuff i wonder if it's strong .. in comparison, i think the nokia feels strong)
6 - how does it generally feel .. i'm afraid it will be pretty fragile
7- do any of you know a newsgroup/usenet client (with nzb's if possible) for windows mobile (or at least a t'rent client) :D

I think i'll get it anyway in a few weeks.. but i just wanted some feedback before i poney up the 700€ for an unlocked version :(

thx you guys

Just A quick update.... Have had my TYTN II for a little over 3 weeks now and am still loving it. It connects to the networks great and I am able to connect my laptop to the internet on the fly without a hitch.

This is a tough little unit !!!!!!!
I was on the golf course yesterday ploting the course using the GPS in the TYTN II (Which works great by the way!). Someone hit a ball in my direction, and before I realized it the ball had struck my phone directly right on the power button. My screen went blank and I thought I had lost the phone for good. I looked at the the side of the phone where the ball struck and noticed the power button wedged inside and there was a pretty significant separation around the keyboard area. It looked pretty bad. I managed to get access to the power button and pressed it and it turned right back on and was still on the screen where I had been. Everything seemed to work correctly. I got home and shut the unit down conmpletely and was able after just a little minor manhandling to get everything to pop back into place. There was no damage either internal or external to the device. The unit still looks like new, with no scratches evene though it took a direct hit from the golf ball. I would definately recommend this device to anyone..........

Glad to hear that is pretty strong.

Does it feel as strong when the screen is flipped up ?
Cause I'll be wanting to put it in a car holder like that , so i have access to the keyboard, but i'm afraid the vibrations of the car won't do much good.

Which size in terms of the memory card to you use ? :)

damn, that person deserves a prize for accuracy! hitting a power button is MUCH MUCH tougher than getting a hole in one 1 would think... ;)

Hi all.

Since I have this model for a few weeks, and I haven't seen a proper review, I thought I'll give it a try.
Just before I begin I'll warn you that this won't be a quite usual review. I'll tell things that I've noticed as a everyday user, not as a journalist.

Let's start with the box and exterior features:
You get a bunch of stuff in the box (half of them you don't really use like the case for example which doesn't have a magnetic clip). The headset is rubbish, so if you really want to listen to music, get yourselves something better.
Now the phone, it's pretty well made, doesn't feel fragile, and I think it's up to the challenge of being tortured :D The slide mechanism is quite smooth. I have a complain on the red (turn off) button. You practicaly use this button 100 times a day (to turn of the display) and they didn't point it out at all, it very hard to press (or you press the recording button very often, like me, with the power button). The missing of number keys is quite anoying, but you'll have to live with it. Hardware spec - find them on the net (gsmarena for example)
So general appereance: well built, with a few drawbacks. 8/10

UI (this is where things get really nasty):
First of all let me mention this. This is a PDA phone! So people, stock up some patience for using this phone, because slow software is one thing that really pises me off! You have to be born to use this type of phone (which I'm not). I'll get back to this at the end.
It has a Windows Mobile 6 and all the bad things that come with it (and a few good). If you are patient then first read a 280 page manual! For a phone?! My car has a smaller owners manual. And that's the shortend version I think. I think nobody (I repeat nobody) uses all of theese features every day. If you have time, and want to have some fun exploring them, then you shoud buy it, if not, get a regular phone. This is not a phone, this is a small laptop with a phone! I'm not just saying this because I'm not tottaly addicted to PDA, I had a few symbians and they are much faster and easier to use. let's get concrete. Web browsing is okey for a phone, but it's far, far away from a PC or a laptop, so get a laptop for that. The GPS is the best I've seen, but get a Garmin or buy it with a car, it's way better, bigger display and easier to use. On a phone? uselles. Camera is also good for a PDA, but terrible even for a normal phone. FPS are just killing the thing, and no flash also. Touchscreen is rubbish. You can't use it with the fingers, you can't dial normally, it's very slow - one word rubbish! The qwerty, I have to say, is great! Very fast typing and easy to use, still the normal dials are missing. You write much faster, but with more mistakes.
If there is anything I forgot let me know
General appereance for this part: 2/10 (if you're my kind of person, if not 7/10 - crucial word patience!)

Conclusion:
If you're a type of person that thinks that everything can be put on a single thing (or wants to save money badly), if you have enough time to wait every time it bugs about something, you really need a GPS, HSDPA and touchscreen, if you have a century to spend on analysing all the functions and programs that can be installed - go for it and buy this phone!

If you're like human, and have a private life, buy a phone for calling, sms and a few extras, then buy a GPS reciever if you get lost, a laptop for business, and a camera (or some other phone) for pictures.

I bought this model because I found it challenging to find out what can a phone do, and, sadly, that is where our life together ends. I had a Nokia 8600 Luna before this one, I still have the Nokia E65 which does all the "complicated" stuff just fine.
I can say that after this phone (as soon as I get rid of it), I just might buy a Vertu Ascent Ti. Not for showing off, but for fullfilling all of my needs (and having the very best software for a phone - Nokia S40 latest edition) and still being one of the best made phones ever! And it's not really an investment, since the high price stays for a long time, unlike with the PDA phones...

P.S. Sorry for a few mistakes that I've made, my English is not perfect. And sorry to all of you who were found insulted, it really wasn't my goal. I just wanted to pull out the truth...

Cheers

Everything is just as it was when I got the phone about a month ago. The screen when flipped stays in position and has not become loose at all. I use mine on a cradle in the car as well and havent had any problems from vibration.

I am using an 8 gig card now. I found them at expansys two days after ordering a 6 gig card.
