Today, the most heavily equipped Samsung cameraphone finally saw its official announcement. It is no wonder that Samsung G800 has been in the spotlight for a long time before its official appearance as it is among the best phones on the market in terms of multimedia capabilities. It is Samsung's cameraphones flagship featuring a stunning 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom. Other camera niceties include wide dynamic range, xenon flash, face detection and, naturally, auto focus. The digicam-like lens cover ensures scratch resistance and also benefits the phone's looks greatly.

If the camera features of Samsung G800 are not enough to impress you by themselves then other features might just do the job. The slider phone comes complete with a 2.4" 262K color display with QVGA resolution that should provide great picture quality. Connectivity options are also quite a lot - GPRS and EDGE, both of class 10 and HSDPA (3.6 Mbps) assure network data transfer, while USB v2.0 and Bluetooth v2.0 should be enough to take care of other connectivity needs.

The tri-band Samsung G800 comes complete with 160MB of internal memory which can be expanded through the microSD card slot. As of now there is no information of the retail price of the handset but we will probably find it out soon as the phone is going to hit European markets no latter than November this year.

A damn good looking phone, but a bit too pricy for me.

Translation:

SAMSUNG G800 IS A PHONE WITH A CAMERA LOOK

2007-10-22 11:41

With a shell in metal, the G800 feels very solid in the hand. It feels more like a camera than a mobile phone and under the shell the phone is equipped with turbo-3g and real optical zoom among other things.

G800 is Samsungs and perhaps the whole mobile markets most competent camera phone. It feels like one has not been stingy with functons here because Samsung is one of very few manufacturers that has optical zoom and not only digital zoom. When I slide the lens shield the camera is activated and the whole feeling of G800 breathes very much compact camera. It works as most other camera mobiles with autofocus, macro mode and possibility to avoid red eyes with the build-in flash.

What separates G800 from the competitors is foremost the very camera like look and the possibility to use a real otical zoom, which means the phone has a real zoom lens and not just processes pictures digitally. Another differential detail one can mention is that G800 has a special feature to find faces in the motive and ensure they are in focus.

Despite that G800 foremost feels like a camera when hold in the hand, it does not need to be ashamed of its mobile phone abilities. It is one of the absolute first one to support turbo-3g in the faster speed 7.2 megabit. That is the speed 3 and Telia among others are building right now. For music, the phone can be synced with Windows Media Player and also play bought and protected music.

If one wants to share images and clips taken with the phone one can use the software Shozu that Samsung ships with the phone. It maske it possible to send images and clips to Facebook, Flickr, Blogger, Youtube and other similar sites. Transmission is done directly over the mobile network.

Facts

Type: Turbo-3G 7,2 Mbit/s

funny they've waited so long to finally announce it...
they've waited for the Japanese version to get announced on the same day

it's called the 920SC, apart from firmware and UI differences, the main difference would be the use of OLED screen (2.4" QVGA) (plus 0.5mm wider and 0.5mm taller)

Why is it whenever Samsung launch a new phone they never say what it's video recording abilities are? Is it the promised VGA @ 30fps?

Their is an error in that article quoted in the OP as doesn't it have a 16M colour screen?

Who else is going to want to see production model produced photos before buying, with that complex lens system on this I am double cautious before buying.

I would rather want to know if the menu system is similar to the one in g600 with all those customisation options.

And the spec list is pretty much amazing too...can't wait for the reviews.

only the slighest qualms with the phone, would like to know whether or not it recors video at vga 30fps, but the fact that they havent mentioned it means that more than likely that it doesn't, also why revert back to the 262k colour display, and not keep the 16mil colour display from the g600 and finally, and this is maby only me, but i was disappointed by the lack of the 3.5mm jack, but still hope that like the g600 it comes with an adapter for one. otherwise perfect.

What I mean with the bad placement of the flash, is the red eye problem when taking potrait pictures.
It is often like that to real digital cameras and anyway, this isn't a major gripe since it can be fixed in Photoshop.

Those aren't complete, their is no information on it's video recording ability.

I am worried that like they did with the U700 compared to the U600 that they may have downgraded the video recording ability, or at the least worst option kept it the same quality as the G600.

how on earth did you come to that conclusion? if you check out the specification of both, you will find that it is the u600 that has more functions by far. the u700 has 1, and only 1, feature that the u600 hasn't got - 3G.

let's go through the difference between the u600 and u700:

u600 feature advantages:
-radio
-cif video recording (u700 has qcif)
-B&O amplifier
-quadband(u700 is triband)
-60MB internal memory (u700 has 20MB)

u700 feature advantages:
-3G

I simply can not believe that this will be the case, as we all have had great hypes about g800. Accordin to various announcments we all read G800 should be "the next generation, new hardware platform ...bla bla...". At the end, it's "just" another Samsung phone with very good camera but nothing more?! Also UI is rather strange, as for 2,4" size I was expection much more screen info (lines) available.

As we all know aside from great camera and "facelifted" UI, G600 was based on old samsung hardware platform (D600/D900/U600), slow processor, with old boring gallery functions (or should I say restrictions) when browsing files on memory card. I thought everything will be changed with G800, making huge leap forward for Samsung. But let's wait for the official reviews to get more acurate info....

ok, maybe is "slightly" upgraded. But if you check JAVA appleats, memory card files manipulation... this is "so much" like D600/D900. As I said in a separate thread about G600, after initial "WOW", still same old interface with same old restrictions. Since this model will be available in a few weeks, i doubt that a new firmware is coming to improve camera quality.

If you want good pictures of a camera phone, get the G600.

The N95 has better colors than G800 ok, but red is too red, green is too green.

K850 is a bit flat, nothing really improved over K800.

It says it will be £129.99 on a O2 50 contract, £59.99 on O2 200 & Leisure & free on O2 400 & above. Handset only it's £349.99.

In the same catalogue the Viewty is priced at £399.99, the G600 at £319.99, the N95 at £499.99 & the K850 at £379.99, So other than the the G600 it's the cheapest of the 5MP cameraphones in the O2 catalogue as far as handset only prices go.

Actually I don't mind 15 FPS. What I find annoying is the 'bubbly' or 'wavy' feel of the video, which most camera phones seems to have. My old digital camera is also QVGA @ 15 FPS, but there's no such thing on its videos (probably because it has a better dedicated processor to handle video encoding).

Quality is quite good (be careful, although there is blue sky in thoses pictures, the weather is very bad here these days and even a Panasonic FZ-8 makes pictures not very good looking! :) ), optical zoom is a very cool feature!

It seems that my firmware is very old (beginning of October), some websites have a firmware more recent (beginning of november) and the quality improves a lot.
I wish it will solve my flash problems.....

The menu are very clear and it's easy to navigate...

I like it a lot! :)

Yes it is QCGA at 15fps, here is an example while walking (be careful, Dailymotion makes some artifacts, in "real" it's very good)

I can't understand why Samsung, Samsung commercials, whatever, can not post somewhere on the web a full review of the commercial phone, especially photo oriented... This flash issue is incredible. The phone is out and nobody can say : this is the final (so pooor) "photo with flash" quality... or "it was improved in the last firmware"...

QVGA at 15 fps is terrible by today's standard. I don't understand why Samsung needs to downgrade the video resolution. The G600 has VGA video at 15 fps.

No equalizer for music player? I hope the sound quality is good...

Having no 3.5 mm jack is fine with me though, as long as there are adapters available, even though the sound quality would be worse than having a direct 3.5 mm jack.

Not being able to add themes is fine with me though as I don't care about cosmetics.

I don't see the point of having a flash, especially if the flash is weak. Flash makes the lighting of the photo you take unnatural anyway. You'd want the most natural photo if you want the photo as a souvenir.

I don't know. My main negative concerns with the G800 is that it only has QVGA @ 15fps video recording compared to VGA @ 30fps with the N82 & Viewty. Also I am concerned that the flash is weaker than the N82.

Some nice night pics there. If only Samsung could sort out the noise issue then I'd get this phone like shot. I don't mind a bit of noise. Indeed it's preferable than having aggressive noise reduction that leaves details blurred. But it's a bit excessive even on daytime pics on the G800. Reminds me a tad of the ill fated Nokia N93.

Page 3 of the thread, you have samples of OZ in action : OZ is doing pretty well. It is THE nice feature of the phone, not disappointing at all.

Disappointing ? : the flash, of course, again. It is definitly doing worse than K850i and N82. Firmware issue ? I do not think so anymore. Samsung, your xenon is so poor - Users are disappointed - G800 is behind K850i and N82.

I've read the review and they said that the phone was the final beta release candidate, maybe that is why the phone had problems with the display. I hope this isn't a general problem...:-/

this phone had unlimited potential, such a dissapointment imo :( i really wanted to like this phone, i really did. i love the design, one of the best looking phones ever imo (i'm probablythe only one who thinks that). it's a real dissapointment, that, it seemingly cannot take no more than 2gb in terms of expandable memory. as far as i know, there's no equalizer, which is a pity. also, it doesn't seem to come with the g600 headset, which allows you to use your own headphones. i've no idea as to why the g600 uses the more 'advanced' ui - that puzzles me. no vga video recording is a real shame. you probably can't record from the radio either - ala the g600. the 'xenon' flash is just...weak. audio quality seems to average. this phone looks amazing, specs were great on paper, not so hot in practice. such a shame.

From what's been indicated on here this phone went into development before the G600 & has taken longer to get to market, plus aren't Samsung's 3G phones developed at a different place to their 2G phones & these two facts probable account for the older UI.

So would you all say the G800 is a flop? I still wouldnt mind eithr the G800/G600 as a stop gap secondary phone. So your saying I shouldnt go for the G800 and instead get the G600? Picture quality doesnt the G800 give better results?

bavlondon, i reckon the g600 pips the g800 in picture quality, bearing in mind the g800 has a 3x optical zoom lens squezed in. the g800 is good, but it wasn't what i expected, sadly.

G800 gives better result than K850i according to the review

From what i have seen thus far i agree with Aidan, the G800 is a missed opportunity, G600 much cheaper and slightly better quality.

Yeah coming from the same source of review, the conclusion now on camera 5 Megapixel quality wise is as below:-

1. N82
2. N95 / N95 8GB
3. G600
4. Viewty
5. G800
6. K850i

Interesting results. I would have thought the G800 would give better results given the optical zoom. When I look though at the pic samples in the G600/G800 GSM arena reviewthe G800 still seems better.

Cant' you read the conclusion !?! :)
"So essentially, we can safely conclude that we like the G800 camera better than the K850 one. However, the G800 should not rest on its laurels since the K850 is not among the leaders of the 5-megapixel brethren in terms of camera quality."

General - Outdoor :
1 - N82, G800, N95
2 - K850i, G600, Viewty

Flash - Low light - Indoor :
1 - N82
2 - K850i
3 - N95, Viewty, G800, G600

Video recording :
1 - N82, N95
2 - Viewty, G600
3 - K850i, G800

This is the "best cameraphone" situation today...

I got the impression from the review that only the N82 & in some areas the N95 surpassed the G800.

am i the only one who doesn't mind that pics are around 2mb in size? doesn't this mean less compression?

Yeah there isnt much compression in the pics.Thats why the pics are huge.Im buying the G800 I think. Its a great phone. Most pics it takes are around 2mb at least which is quite big but also means no compression artifacts and less loss in quality due to lower compression compared to the nokia phones for eg

Not soon...unfortunately.Im going to HK on the 2nd January.I will normally return back with a G800 but may be I will change my mind there for a Viewty. But my cam phone wont be a nokia again for sure.If I get the G800 I will look for my N93i with my friend to compare the images using OZ from both.Im peronally impressed with the pics taken by G800.It looks more like pics by a digi cam than a phone

Chtinois, i just put them in overall without following your criteria.

It should be like this though if follow your conclusion and criteria.

General - Outdoor :
1 - N82, G600, N95
2 - K850i, G800, Viewty (but remember viewty color reproduction is the closest to canon digicam)

Flash - Low light - Indoor :
1 - N82, K850i
2 - G600 (the brightest LED)
3 - Viewty, G800 (Both has xenon flash but only good within 1 m but you can adjust to ISO800 on Viewty)
4 - N95

Video recording :
1 - Viewty (VGA 30fps and QVGA 120fps)
2 - N82, N95 (VGA 30fps)
3 - G600 (VGA 15fps)
4 - K850i, G800 (QVGA 30fps)

That's odd logic you rate the Viewty above the N95 & N82 just because it has QVGA 120fps, it's an interesting feature but hardly a vital one.

I think he rates it more becasue the quality of recording at VGA 30fps is actually a lot better than what Nokia can produce at the same resolution. There is no hissing sound and the picture looks a lot clearer with more stable and natural colours. Its in avi aswell hence the better quality.

From what I've seen the video recorded by the Viewty seems better than what is recorded by N95 with the same resolution and frame rate (and I'm assuming N82, N95 and N95 8GB has the same video recording quality).
