interesting design, but the price will need to be much cheaper to be competitive in Australia

225 euros converts into $375 AU, 5700 is only a little more expensive ($400) but i'm sure it will be significantly cheaper once released (who follows RRP?)

Most likely it?s plastics. It is not aluminum since ...with aluminum side panels and smooth inspirational design with two trendy color combinations to choose from (text from Nokia 5310 introduction)

Nokia promises up to 18 hour playback (in flightmode/offline mode, I suppose). It?s a step forward because Nokia has been lagged behind SE in that case. (The russian website ferra.ru compare that capabilty, I?ve read their comparison via on online translator)

Not that bad - nice to see that they squeezed a 3.5mm jack into a <10mm frame...

i'm sure it will be significantly cheaper once released (who follows RRP?)

That's what I think too - if it debuts at 180 or so € it's quite a nice device. And that price is with a 2GB microSD, and thus, not bad at all imho...

Leonard, I think I read somewhere that FP2 will bring multitasking not FP1, but I could be wrong, what's for sure, is that playdead said (in 6500 slide review ) that S40 devices with multitasking will come to the market in Q1 2008. these FP1 devices are coming in Q4 (and some even in Q3) this year, so I think this backs-up my theory.

Ruhul, Awesome_Aleks, I'm one of those who don't want the review to be made soon, the prototypes won't have the same audio/camera/build quality as the production version, so, if he reviews a proto I think we'll all get disappointed by the phones.

why's that?

i understand what your saying about the phones though, but there wouldn't be a huge difference with the final product (i'n only saying that because it would take to long to wait for a final version review)

maybe an overview which looks at the new features, etc and aproper review closer to the release date

I don't think that's a surprise, the phone is built (to a certain extent) on 6500classic hardware and software, so it there shouldn't be a big need for testing and development.

the phone also has no rivals from nokia, actually, it's the first and the only candybar music phone from nokia, so its release won't pose any threat to any current nokia phone.

on the other hand, an ASAP release should also steal a lot of the market share of some rivals like the way overpriced w880.

Apart from that, you're right, it doesn't have any direct competitors(unless Moto actually launch E8)......

well, the 7500 is based on 6300 hardware, and the 5310 hardware is slimmer than that.... but in either ways my point still holds true. :)

the moto E8 still has to pass both the rumor-phase and the post-announcement-pre-release phase to enter the market.

5310 looks really intresting indeed, i may even consider to get it when it arrives, but i'm totally unsure about its battery performance, i mean with the 860mAH battery, a Qvga screen and such other functions like gaming and listening to music, you'd naturally think it needs to be charged everyday and thats when it loses to W880 or other comparable SonyEricsson products.
but then again its damn slim and yet very unique... that might be the only reason for me to buy it anyways lol.

Are you kidding me? The 5310 beats the W880 and other Sony Ericsson equivalents hands down. Don't look down on and underestimate the small battery, the 5310 has very good battery life, including a rating of 20 hours of pure music!!

yes, I think when the price stabilize, it will be about 35% cheaper, which is a good price difference, but IMO, the choice will be made according to one's need for UTMS or not, a Radio (which is a must in a music phone imo) or not. :)

I have just bought the 5310 and it's excellent, except for one thing, it's keypad backlight is terrible, especially next to other Nokia devices such as the 6300. It was so poor that I thought I had a defective handset, so took it back, but when I was shown another one, it was no different. The display is slightly less bright than the 6300 and (even in total darkness) you'll have a difficult time reading the keys.

The other features of the phone however are first rate and the audio quality (when using 3rd party headphones) is far better than any other handset I have ever used. Construction is good as well, nice feeling music player buttons and very light (you almost don't know you've got anything in your hand) and very (VERY) slim! Decent speaker volume too and nice that there is a free 2GB memory card in the package too.

If anyone knows anything about the keypad issue, my software is:

V 03.60
13-09-07
RM-303

And with regard to the 5610, it's due in stores from around the 19th of November (from what I was told yesterday when I bought the 5310) and will be £229.00 SIM free.

It's really slim, but still with a solid feeling. I thought the red borders would bother me, they do look a bit tacky on the pics, but it actually looks quite classy in reality. The headphones are not really good, but with a 3,5mm plug you can plug which ever you want in there.

The shortcut menu is cool, with what you need and you see today's event frpm the calendar on the startpage. The display takes up a lot of the front of the phone and is bright and crisp.

I don't like Nokia PC Suite, but I can live with that. The radio works ok, the reception isn't great, but exactly what you can expect from that small headset/remote. The remote is cool aswell, only one button is confusing at start, but I have a feeling that it'll be quite usefull once i get a hang of it. The camera is standard (not great).

The buttons are a bit small for my hands, but they have a nice feeling and are miles better than those of the SE W880.

What else do you want to know? I will be testing the video-quality later on.

I guess it is also used to answer and hang up the phone, but I haven't been able to test it yet.

It seems like the device is a remote control, radio tuner, clip and a microphone.

Whats the camera like, I know it's fairly basic version but is it better than the camera on the W880 for example?

I tested the sound quality with headphones and my stereoreceiver and compared it to my laptop and my iPod Nano (2nd gen). All tests showed only a minimal difference between the phone and the Nano (the laptop was a bit ahead in all aspect), the Nano had a slight broader register and a bit warmer sound, but I am still impressed with the phone, using the bundled headphones I could almost not tell the difference between it and the Nano.

The back is plastic, but it doesn't feel that bad, cause it has like a structured surface which maked is lie better in the hand and smooths the feeling out, if you see what I mean..

I have not used the camera of w880 so i can't really tell the difference, I will give you a pic soon.

Thank you for your first impressions.

Can you do some unboxing pics, especially from the headphones. I really want to know how the remote and earphones look, because there are even no official pics from Nokia.

Thank you

Unfortunately I can't find my real camera at the moment, so I had to take the pics with the phone...

Anyway, after some experimenting, the microphone is indeed "inside" the remote, which means you can easily replace the headphones to something descent, cause they are NOT and still have the hands-free function.

I haven't tried the w880 ones, but I've tried other Walkman-phones and the headphones of them were all better (in-ear plug and better depth).

My impressions of the 5310 since I bought it on Sunday:

BATTERY LIFE:
I haven't recharged it yet! It's still performing well on it's first charge and I've made quite a few calls, Bluetoothed several albums to it (at quite high quality 256KB, so around 6 -> 9MB per song), sent around 20 SMS's and it's still two thirds full, so I'm impressed with that so far.

CAMERA:
As you've no doubt seen from the pictures on here, it seems to be the same as the 6300. Nothing special, but then I've seen a whole lot worse and when you look at the price, it's not bad. There are landscape and portrait modes, effects (including Normal, False Colours, Greyscale, Sepia, Negative and Solarise) as well as white balance and a self timer.

MUSIC PLAYER:
First rate audio quality here. I put the 5310 next to a 6300 and there was quite a quality difference. I used various different headphones and as I do music production, was able to use some very high quality studio headphones and the quality is really very good. No horrid background noise that distracts from listening to the music. This, along with practical EQ settings and four skins makes the music player enjoyable. Album art is also shown and to get you going, there are some included songs on the 2GB card included in the package. The music player itself is very much like the one on the 6300 and other S40 phones. The radio has stepped up a notch too with RDS and Auto Frequency tuning. You can sellect a different skin for this too. On a final note here, the music player keys work really well, unlike some music handsets where you end up playing songs in the middle of doing something else, this doesn't really happen with the 5310. It's also great to be able to plug just about any headphones right into the phone without needing an adaptor.

CALL QUALITY:
I've found this to be very high. Great quality and no real distortions or unwanted noise. No matter if you are calling landlines or other mobiles, the quality is great. Better quality than the Sony Ericsson W580i for instance, which I have found not too great when it comes to calling some landlines, as the sound is sometimes unclear, so again I was very pleased.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
This phone is VERY slim and VERY light. Most of the time, you don't know you have anything in your hand. It's like holding a Sony Ericsson W880i, though I find this handset better INHO due to the fact that I like phones that have a radio and I'm not that fussed about 3G video calling. It seems quite well made as well, which a lot of phones in this price range (£129.95 PAYG) are not. The included hands-free is also pretty cool as well.

NOT LIKED SO MUCH:
Being a slim phone, there is not much room for a powerful speaker. Having said that, it's much louder than a W880i but no way as loud as a W580i. If you have the phone in a case, you may have trouble hearing it when out in a busy area (a city centre for example), so it's best to have it set to vibrate and ring. There are some pretty good ringtones and alert tones provided too, and I always love a phone where I can set my own message tone (something I don't like about a lot of Samsung's, where you have just four to sellect from).

On a personal note, I think the display could have been a little more bright (not as bright as the 6300's display) and the keypad backlight (as I have already mentioned) is pretty poor. The backlight on the 6300 can almost light up a room, where even in total darkness, the 5310's keypad is only just visable. Maybe a firmware update can cure this? I'm not sure. This would have to be one of the only bad points of the phone. Other than that, for the price, it's hard to fault.

I haven't tried the w880 ones, but I've tried other Walkman-phones and the headphones of them were all better (in-ear plug and better depth).

No doubt that in-ear headphones are the best solution on the market to listen to musik. But I tried several of those, especially from S/// (HBH-DS980; HPM-75/HPM-70), and none of the three included earpeace sizes fitted 100%. While walking, in-ear headphones !always! fall out of my ear after some time (mostly after a few minutes), running with them is actually a no go.

But the Nokia ones, for instance HS-43 dont plug right into your ear, but stick to them! That is a signficant advantage of these headphones, and I rather go for them with a bit less quality (you may can equalize that putting high bitrate musik on your phone) than struggling with the S/// ones...

If you look two posts before, MonoEvolver said "...so it's best to have it set to vibrate and ring..."
Secondly, is there any Nokia released in the recent past (2006,2007) which didn't had the vibrate ringer option?
And furthermore, I had a prototype which provided this option.

@ bob2@comcast.net. I think it has it. almost no new handset comes without that feature.

I've read that the new S40 shows the name and the immage of the addressbook-entry of missed calls and recieved messages in standbymode. I've known that only from SE-handsets. could anyone take a picture of how it is done? does it also appear when the screensaver is on?

1. Does this phone support synchronizing of calendar with a computer via bluetooth?

2. Does this phone support java applications, I have read somewhere it does not?

3. Does this phone support custom themes, and how much can one change, anything except the background? Can someone post pics of some custom theme, I have not used the S40 platform before.

4. How many sms can you save on the phone and what about enteries in the calendar and phonebook, is it possible to have a photo attached to each contact?

I hope you may answer some of my questions...

now my question is this true or false?

Well, usually manufacturers aren't lying on their websites, so - yes, it can play videos, and does so nicely.

forum.nokia.com says that it plays 3GPP formats (H.263), H.264/AVC & MPEG-4 videos, I haven't tried it myself though, so I can't tell you how well it works. And of course you have to transcode videos - normal video files you'd watch on your PC won't work.

Alazorn: 1. and 2. I know for a fact to be true as I've used both. Synchronization of Calendar, Contacts, Notes and To-Do with Outlook using Nokia PC Suite works flawlessly, both over bluetooth and usb. [edit:] I have to revise this. Lately I've noticed that PC Suite for unknown reason sometimes duplicate fields in some entries. It doesn't affect performance but is somewhat annoying. Duplicates do not show up in Outlook, only in the phone contacts.

As for 3. Nokia Series 40 Theme Studio (http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/7e78403b-ce27-42c3-ba3c-d8629da7622a/Nokia_Series_40_Theme_Studio.html) is linked from the 5310 dev page (http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/5310_XpressMusic) so I suppose it does.

About 4., I don't know the limit for the number of entries. You may attach a photo to a contact, even a video clip.

Via Babelfish

"The quality of the reproduction of music good, is used the chosen chip AIC33, just as in other models XpressMusic of last generation or in Nokia 5700. Loudness in the head sets is sufficient, apparatus sounds rather well, although subjectively to it now and then does not be sufficient the depth of sound. Of maximum loudness it is sufficient for the majority of situations. Sound is not compared with Nokia N91 or Samsung i450, but it is completely acceptable, it is located on the level of rule Samsung Beatz, it wins in Sony Ericsson Walkman (not for all compositions, but preponderance is, as a whole this solution better)."

Hi

I'am from sweden and I get the exaktly same problem as you, when I listen to mp3s and 2-3 songs plays well then the phone is reboots its self. Very, very annoying and I returned the phone for reparation.
Otherways the phone is briliant and mach better then then sony ericsson with its propriaty contacts for earphones and data communikation. it's thin and very easy to have in your pocket. The display is very clear and I like nokias todayscreen with easily reacheble shortcuts for the most wanted usable funktions.

Just bought the phone, after having several phones previous to this including the Sony W880i, i have to say this is by far the best.

I've included some pics for those of you who are interested in seeing the "live" version before you buy it.

I've had this for a week, played music every day, sent over 500 texts, made a few calls and have only just put it on to charge tonight. :jump:

Ok camera is only 2 MP .. but then again that's the reason i bought a seperate digi cam, you'll never get picture perfect with any camera phone, so it's good for on the move shots that you often find yourself taking.

Music wise, it's great, buttons come in very handy. Volume is fine, speaker clarity is great. Better than Sony W880i in my experience.

Overall i give this phone 10/10

Hi folks, bought this nice baby yesterday:-) This phone is really supreme, but I am experiencing a problem: when I play any music via Music Player to my headphones, clicks and short drop-outs occur in the audio sometimes... Is this a general problem or should I just return it back to the reseller? Another point is that high-compressed audio (such as Limp Bizkit's Hot Dog from Chocolate Starfish and Hot Dog Flavoured Water and more tracks from this album for example) seem to be distorted a bit (like the audio chip is being overloaded with too high gain setting, but only at the peaks). Doesn't have any relation with headphones used. Could any owner write his audio experience please? Thanks a million:)

after using this for two days, here's the pros & cons that i found so far:

PROS:
*good battery life
*vivid screen
*great sound & mp3 player w/ 3.5mm jack
*thin & lightweight
*good built & looks nice
*very fast interface

CONS:
*u cannot add a whole folder to a playlist, or u cannot select multiple songs/files to add.
*it cant play QVGA/CIF/VGA video clips(15pfs)
*small screen
*the screen's brightness is inferior to 6300's.
*poor camera
*animated themes dont work

Hi folks, bought this nice baby yesterday:-) This phone is really supreme, but I am experiencing a problem: when I play any music via Music Player to my headphones, clicks and short drop-outs occur in the audio sometimes... Is this a general problem or should I just return it back to the reseller?

Several users have experienced this, including myself.

Have this phone for two weeks and yes it is a great phone. Music sounds fantastic with my Koss Portas Pro. Have a problem though, when writing or reading messages the white background is not white, it has a shade of blue
on the bottom two thirds of the display. Has anyone the same problem. Seems to be only in the text editor. The display could be a tad brighter in any case. Changing the theme does not help either. Is that normal ? Is my display fawlty ? Thanks for your help.

Nope, there's no manual adjustment for brightness but there is an ambient light sensor just like those on S60 phones.

OK guys I get my phone back today from service regarding rebooting problem when I used the mp3 musik player and unfortunelly the firmwareuppgrade has NOT cured the problem. The phone has alredy rebooted itself twice since I toked it from service (hah, just now when I typing this reply and listening my favorite music on my 5310 has the them thing rebooted itself to, ironic isn't )

The bright side: I bought an Sony MDR-EX85LP in-ear headphones and the sound is gourgeus cristalclear and the and the dept is very balanced maybe not as deep as on my SE W950i but the sound experience is fantastic.:jump:
Newer heard any SE walkman phone to sound so god as this Nokia phone.

I'am gona take it back to the store and demand an exchange for anotherone or money back or maybe uppgrade to 5610.

So the verdict is that the Firmware uppgrade is NO,NO to fix the rebooting problem on this phone !:-/

Hi guys! Just read all the post you placed.. (phew!) My N5310 is actually working real fine.. even better than expected.. Running on an 8GB card without any freezes or reboots.. Sometimes it would slow down when im typing a message but no biggie.. It already has 3GB of music with all its album art.. 2GB of videos and about 1GB of pictures.. Had a fellow member trying a 6GB card but didnt work well, it only recognized 1.7GB in the phone.. Dunoo what he did prior to using it but for my case, i reformatted it in the pc first then in the phone.. But all in all my frends... N5310 is the best music phone for me as of now.. Dunno if I could say the same when the SE w960i comes out.. hehehe

hi...i have the same rebooting problem. today i thought of testing my phone with other audio formats. here are the results:

1]M4a format (64kbps):
i used nokia music manager to convert 10 songs from mp3 to m4a format and played it in my mobile (with REPEAT ON opton) i tested it for around 2+ hours and had no rebooting problems.!!!!!

2]MP3 format(128kbps,320kbps,192kbps mixed collection)
i used the same songs but his time after playing 18 songs i.e around 1hr 20 mins (i had repeat on) my phone rebooted

3] AAC format (128kbps)
again used nokia music manager to convert the same mp3 files. i played these files for around 2 hours and had no probs!!!!!!

i think a faulty mp3 codec(specially for higher bit rate files) is responsible for the problem! please try out and post ur results...

Weird - but not impossible that it is the cause for the reboots actually.

I kinda face the same problem with the W950 - doesn't play any AAC file without either completely locking up the phone after 5 or so songs (LC-AAC files) or instantly crashing the Walkman app when selecting a artist/record/song from the library (HE-AAC)...so I'm stuck with crappy WMA's as I don't want to use the inefficient MP3 codec with the limited storage it offers :insane:

Anyway, at least this points to a pure software problem - which should be fixed ASAP...

here is something really amazing.

i made a playlist of around 12 songs which i thought were all of AAC formats but when my mob was playing 9th song it rebooted... later i went back to my playlist and noticed that the 9th song was infact an MP3. i had accidently jumbled it with other AAC format songs!!!
it has to be the codec problem!...

those who dont have this problem pls post ur mob OS version.

i dont have a wma converter so could not check with that format...

1. Is there a sms limit, if yes how many can you have inbox/outbox?

2. Can you make folders, sort the sms and search for sms messages?

3. Can you save/sync the messages with the computer and if yes, in what format are they saved, .txt?

Hello folks, New on the block...

Bought 5310 just a week back. It failed to start just after 2 hours of purchase and kept restarting. Anyway, got a replacement and it's reception died out within 8 eight hours of operation. Third replacement is on the way.

I had a talk with a Nokia service centre guy, what he told me that currently both 5310 and 5610 are very unstable and should be avoided. And i personally would advise anyone to abstain from buying these two models, for that matter at least 5310.

Apart from these flaws, the phone's sound through jack is great but not amazing, on-board speaker is quite weak but certain features that make up this phone are:

1) 3.5mm jack (must have for music enthusiasts)
2) Dedicated Music Keys (again, must haves)
3) Overall ergonomic UI (better & faster than Symbian phones)
4) BT 2 + A2DP and USB 2.0

The let downs are:

1) Poor and jittery video recording (details):

Recording:
Format : h263
Size : 176 x 144
Rate(Frame/sec) : 6.92

Playback:
Only 176x144 resolution supported. Although supports H.264 profile but the playback is not impressive. Though I've successfully tried playback of MP4 video @ 25kbps (Standard baseline MPEG-4 profile) without jerks with audio at 64Kbps (AAC/Mono)

2) Poor camera refresh rate in still picture mode.
3) Unstable

Guys I have got a new 5310 and it has some issues.

>>When I play music it hangs and this happens almost everytime I start to play music.
>>I had to take the phone to the nearest Nokia care service centre.
>>They flashed the phone and gave it back to me.
>>Right away I tried to restore the contacts back that I made out of the phone when I gave it for the service.
>>The phone got stuck again.
>>I had an argument with the service guy and I suspected that he just did the factory reset.
>>He then did the flashing in front of me.
>>And he advised me not to use the backup file since it might have some bugs in it.(Now I really can't understand how that can happen).
>>So I bought a new memory card since I can't afford to format and lose the data in the other card.
>>Now what I need from you guys is that, can you figure what really is the issue here and how can I get the contacts back in to my phone without getting it affected by the bugs or what so ever.
>>I just wanted the phone to work fine as I heard the S40 series should be faster than the older versions and honestly I find my old 6300 faster than this phone.
>>Is there any updates available to fix this issue?
>>Is this issue there in 5610 b'se I like that phone and don't mind dumping this phone for that!
>>Suggestions are resolutions are WELCOME!!!

I know the socket is 3.5mm... I'm talking about a headset adapter that lets you do handsfree calling, has music playback controls, AND lets you plug in your own headphones via a 3.5mm jack. (there are a couple of headset adapters like this for S60, but not for S40 it seems)

Aleks,

Thanks for the reply! I just read this in the gsmarena review as well. I had heard elsewhere (on MR maybe?) that the 5310 did NOT in fact come with a headset adapter, and only the 5610 did.

I'm also curious as to whether there are any headsets for the 5310 that would let you fully control music playback via remote (more than just letting you skip forward one track as the current headset does).

I asked about this in the 5610 thread, and apparently those headsets (the AD-44 and AD-54) only work on S60 phones, not S40 phones. :( As far as I can tell, there aren't any headsets for the Nokia XM series that let you control music playback (aside from one lame button for advancing tracks). Knights,

Thanx for the feedback, both 6300 & 5310 are equipped with 860mAH batteries, but though the battery capacity in these two are the same but it seems they are two different batteries (due their different battery code names), so possibly the better performance on 5310 can be due to the newer battery technology as well as the Light Sensor which decreases the display's brightness.
Actually both 5610 and 6500Slide are coming with 900mAH batteries as well, and they are a MILLION miles better than any other previous nokia phones with 900mAH batteries (Eg. 6170), I can get 3days of usage with my 5610 (same with my Ex-6500Slide) which was the greatest surpirse in these two phones ;)

LOL not the forget the shocking battery peformance of 6300 which at max. would only work for 1.5days and i hate anykind of phone which is not capable of at least 2days of full charge ;) LOL...

So could you re-confirm if it atleast can work for 2full days? or did you ever managed to empty it in less than 2days ;)

Thankx ;)

knights.JayTana
27-01-2008, 15:28

depends on your mode of usage.... mine can last for 2 fulldays...

or did you ever managed to empty it in less than 2days

All I can tell you is that I'm in the UK, and that if you go to

that will enable you to download the software updater. Whether there's any difference between the UK and USA software I can't tell you, I'm afraid.

Eldar mentioned (in his review) 5610's comes with an electronic chip which adjusts the power consumption of the phone, thats why 5610 gives almost a double music playback time than 6500Slide, Now I’m wondering can someone confirm if 5310 does have that kind of Chip as well?

Yes, the 5310 also has this chip, because it can play music for 20 hours straight as well

I have this phone and I've kinda got some mixed feelings about it...

Pros: Thin, not bulky AT ALL, easy to use, built in easy to use music player

Cons: Freezes up alot and I mean ALOT, becomes slow if you are texting multiple people at once (it gets REALLY frustrating).

All in all I don't like this phone. It annoys the crap out of me. I find me self having to take the the battery out and restarting it (cause it keeps freeing) at least twice a day or more sometimes (depending on the day. It has a mind of its own). Very bi-polar phone haha :). But I would never ever buy this phone again and I would never recommend it to a friend... EVER!

that sounds bit weird. Anyway should take that crap to warranty service and get new :) It's like my friends both 2 same phones for him and other for wife. Same sw but his phone keeps crashing all the time. I did even factory flash it for him but did not help so HW problems for sure.
