hmm, now I don't know if to take the 6500slide or the 5610xm ... ;-)

it's quite an interesting proposition

5610: 3.2 megapixel camera with no Carl Zeiss optics, no TV OUT, it has IrDA (unlike 6500), better styling (in my opinion), its slightly larger in every aspect, it has small aluminium plating as opposed to full stainless steel, although it weighs less, and it has the small slide under the display for the music functions

i would pick the 5610 because i am oriented towards music, and cheap ;)

EDIT: and a dedicated audio chip, very very nice!

I can see this baby is going to harm the 6500's sale vastly.

I don't think so actually - this is squarely aimed at the youth/active market, why the much more sober design of the 6500 Slide appeals more to a older/more classic group of people imho...

It really is a race to market for the W910 & 5610.

That depends a lot on the W910's price I'd say - if playdead's W910 price prediction is accurate (470?) and this comes out at 300? and a bit I think this might enjoy much better sales even if it comes out later...

Guys, sorry, I can't say much now regarding this phone :(
The slider button under the screen works different, depending on where are you now. On the standby it activating radio or mp3 player quickly, and you can switch between them and standby screen. In the player it works like FF, in the radio mode - to browse the stations. It remind me samsung G600 realisation a bit, there is animation when you slide the button right or left, current screen information slides as well, opening new one. It looks nice and I'm sure people will like this a lot, it is good innovation for music phone. The device is priced right and will have great sales, and it's so obvious that nokia is targetting on walkman market... the device remind me w850 a lot with rubberized back and red colored details. Loudspeaker is pretty poor, not comparable with stereospeakers of 5700, but i find it enoung for many.
The phone is glossy and the keys are glossy as well, but cleaned they looks nice. Black polished flat surface... but keys are not touch-sencetive, they feel comfortable and have good respond.

Sound quality is main focus for nokia, expect it to be really good. In combination with even more renewed mp3 player interface (thanx to s40v5 fp1, it has same type of very nice skins dedicated for player menu, animated equalizers, changing automaticly from the type of music you're listening to, animated buttons, album arts etc) 5610 becomes ultimate music phone, there's no doubts about this.

this statement is slightly confusing, you say it can be switched into the player and backl, but you also say it can be used to fast forward...

does this mean if you hold the slider in it can fast forward tracks? (or maybe switch tracks which would be excellent outside of music mode, as this would far more then make up for the missing music keys)

knights, nope. playlists are similar to 6300.

memory card volume is depending on country, generally 512 mb for 5610 and 2 gb for 5310

Loudspeaker is poor only compared to stereospeakers!! Don't change the sence of my words!

I really liked the slider mechanism, it is very smooth. When I thried the samples, I haven't found any differences in FP1 compared to S40 5th edition 6500 classic and slide...

5310 is very solid device which is going to have huge sales, it's really pleasant in reality. Plastic quality is really nice on both.

I've compared both 5310 and 5610 ti N81 with one headset, and N81 has been louder, better in sound department, but the difference isn't big.

Regarding slider button on 5610: it won't have all the functionality I said before in commercial samples it seems. It does not matter where you are now, either menu, or active standby, or any application, the slider button ALWAYS switch you to player or radio mode. FF is not possible atm, we'll see what's will change later, as nokia stuff said.

Who is main audithory for bright colored music phones? right, young people. Are majority of young people capable to pay a lot for their fones? No. That's why nokia's xpressmusic devices priced low, sell tons and have huge success while certain walkman phones lowering their sales...

I was going to buy either a Samsung G600, Sony Ericsson T-650 or Motorola RAZR2 V8 until I saw this. I had narrowed down the choice to the Samsung G600 (with the help of everyone over at the Samsung forum here), but after looking more at the 5610, decided to wait it out, as it's spec is very impressive.

When I got to Carphone Warehouse, I was still undecided. I looked at the G600 and was amazed, but somehow it didn't win me over 100% for some reason (the message tones are horrid for such a classy phone and why you can't use MP3 tones when the U600 can is beyond me). I had a look at the T-650, and I felt the same about that (I didn't like the metal-coated plastic, it felt a little cheap on the inside when you took the battery cover off), something wasn't selling me on either of them anough to get one and I'm quite glad now, as it seems the 5610 would be more me.

My daughter has the black 5300 with the speakers and (for the money) it's a great little phone. The 5610 however, is in a whole new leauge!

A strange thing happened when I was in Carphone Warehouse today.

I asked the store manager about the 5610 and he said that Carphone Warehouse are not getting the handset in anytime soon and maybe not even this year, due to an "un-named network" having an exclusive on it. As a result of this, it has been removed from the "coming soon" section of the website, so that people (such as myself) stop asking about it.

When I asked "do you know which network has it for the UK?", he went very silent and said he didn't know, though I got the impression that he did. The conversation ended right there and I was left puzzled!

I checked the Carphone Warehouse website when I got home and sure enough, it wasn't in the coming soon section anymore, even though it was there a few weeks ago. :insane:

Anyone else know anything about this?

Well, currys are part of a larger company, DSGi. DSGi recently sold The Link, so Currys have started to take on the mobile market.

As of a couple of weeks ago, we do contracts, but none of our staff (including myself) have had any formal training, so in terms of pricing, i have no idea! I cant see us being cheap though. :-/

Thanks ruhul !

I pay for 5610 339 euros !
Eh, guys, the phone is just awesome !!

Sorry but my english don't let me give you a looong review :( ...

So, as far as I can !

To start with, I must say that there are many changes in 5th edition !
-The icons in the menu are nicer than in 6233 etc. (nice animated)
-When you have a message or a missed call the slide-button light-up every 30 seconds (that's very helpful)
-When you hane a message the phone shows you the sender's name ,the time tha you got the message and the sender's picture :) !!(the same with missed calls)
-When you watch a video the tags "back" "options" etc. , disappear and also there is a progress line that shows you the video status ...
When you watch a video and then the phone rings (or a note in calendar) the player playback automaticaly pause the video so you can continue after the call ...In 6233, in that case the video start again from the begining !
Also, when you watch a video you can go in the menu and wherever you want while the video continues in the backround :) !!

There are a lot changes that i can't recall now ...

Regarding the phone and build quality i can say : robust !!
Slide mechanism is steady enough to forget 6288 and N95 :D !
Oh, yeah, 5610's slide is so strong and nice :rotate: !
The screen is bright and i can say that i didn't expect a lot because of light sensor ...The screen is gooood !!
The numerical keypad is veeeery (believe me) comfortable though the d-pad need a little bit exercise (not too much, a few hours) !
Soft keys are also comfortable ...

The sound through loudspeaker is very loud (not like 6233:D), clear and crispy(miles ahead from 6233) !!
The headphones is that good to drop EP-630 :D !Beside 6233, 5610 is also mileees away !!!
With EP-630 the music is just a pleasure  !

Regarding the camera i can say that it's better compared to my brother's N73 !!

That dual-led is damn good !Also, macro mode is so nice !
I'll post pics later :) !
I don't check video quality but you know, it's Nokia !

And the phone is sooo beautiful  !!!!!

All questions are welcome !!

I Finally got my 5610!!!
And i think i'm in:love:
Before anything else, this phone is really a " bang for the buck" as they say.

This phone, in my opinion, is better than "MOST" Nseries mobiles.
There is nothing that is cellphone lacks, except using something other than plastic in its build, including a Wifi feature and a Carl Zeiss lens too would be nice.
Slider mechanism is smooth and firm.

Pros: High quality screen, 3.2 MP Camera,Loud, probably as loud as N73 but sound is crisper and better quality due to a dedicated audio chip.Slider-feature(under screen) is a unique addition by Nokia nd is VERY USEFUL and fast (no lagging, Because of the S40 which is a VERY stable OS).
The screen is SCRATCHPROOF as well as the back, If you dont belive me check the datasheet for the 5610!!!!

Cons: Its a Fingerprint magnet, Feels a BIT cheap, although sides are made out of anodised aluminium, the volume buttons on the side are a bit hard to press, no lens protection.

I just have one issue and i would like varsamakos to confirm if he has the smae problem on his cellphone.
When i try answering a call using the slide function i get a delay of about 3 secs before the call is actually answered.Do you have the same prob, or is it a hardware malfunction and i should return it for another one?

And i agree with versamakos, It's really a privilege to own it now!! :super::D

varsamakos
18-11-2007, 23:50
Good buy my friend ;) !

I know about the delay that you are talking about, it's about 1.5 second in my 5610 ...No problem :) ...

Regarding volume button I can say that it's not that difficult to press, I think it's Ok-ish ...
Yeah, it is fingerprint magnet (I notice that in cases of strong light) but i like the way it looks, you know, that flat glass , it looks nice ...

Xiztance
19-11-2007, 01:09
I hope they do fix that delay in their next firmware update.

Yeah, the flat design look awesome, kinda resembles the N81 if you're standg a few metres away from the mobile, thats if you have the blue edition which is black all over the front with the slide closed :D.

And by the way, the video is VGA quality at 30 fps.Wish the phone has stereo speakers :(

My ringing tone is aways heard as ascending although i have set it to a ringing setting, i heard they are doing this to new phones( beginning 2007), because people complained it shocks them when the phone starts ringing loudly(I dunno why, But i think thats how mobile phones should be, no one wants a missed call,IMO)

I dunno if you can do this with S60 phones, but on the 5610( S40) you can customize the shortcut bar at the top. This means you can organise, delete, add and remove different applications or functions such as calculator or alarma clock :D.

Yeah, it captures 30 fps at 640x480 resolution i guess, which is pretty good, and the video calling is in 15 fps to all who mixed up between the 2 cams.
Here's the datasheet it answers all your questions ... Enjoy :D

As we all (s40 users) know, in s40 when you change a theme unfortunately
ringtone, message tone and alarm tone automatically change :( !!

^^^Yeah, what varsamakos said is true, everyday i find different changes and everytime i used the phone i find something new.

Guys, i just showed you the official datahseet, it clearly states under the camera title that it records video in VGA at 30 fps, no need to confirm that, unless you don't trust Nokia :p.

haha!:D thanks xiztance, yeah, nokia's spec sheets are sometimes inaccurate.. like what from i read that 5610 runs on S40 3rd edition w/c is totally false.
and on the video resolution, is it smooth? like the n95? or choppy like those on 6233 & 6280?
anyway,i think im going for 5310 now...:D

I didn't check hows the video on the n95, so i can't really judge, but the video works for me, sorry.
Unfortunately you can't use the front cam for anything except for video calls, would be better if you could have taken portrait pics :D, never mind the quality .... :P
Well this might prove that i dont have an AV connection since the datasheet is inaccurate, Dammit .. Hehe.
Samuelby, why dont you wait for the 5610, it has better features and looks, or is it the price thats holdin' you off?

There is not a single difference that i can see in hardware between both phones, even the location of the flash, loudspeaker, microusb ... etc are all the same, the only difference is the material they're made of. According to that i can expect both phones to behave the same way, the loudspeaker is very clear at maximum volume, no worries, but i dont think we'll see bass-enabled loudspeakers in mobile phones until at least next year, cheers!!

5610 = plastic front/back - anodised aluminium sides :D

I didn't exactly know how to check for the framrate in vlc, what i did was i recorded a 26 second clip, and found the total number of frames using quicktime which was 394 total frames.
The math is simple and you get a 15.15 fps, not sure if this method is accurate, but it i am conviced its a VGA cam recording 15 fps at 640x480 resolution.

Although i am concerned about a thing, when playing the video on the 5610 it runs smooth, but on my pc its looks like a slide show sometihng like 1 frame per sec, unless i run the video on a smaller resolution that i can get decent fps.
Do you have the same problem, Varsamakos?
I am open to anyone's opnion on the matter, i am darn pissed!!!!!

Playing the video with Media Player Classic ...

silverwolf0
21-11-2007, 03:20
I don't have my 5610 with me right now but contrary to Xizstance's initial unfounded claim of 30fps for the video recording, the framerate is actually 14.8fps for BOTH VGA and QVGA recordings, which is more in line with the roundabout number calculated several posts above. You can easily see the framerate by using media player classic and looking at the properties. At either VGA or QVGA setting at the highest quality, the video can be clearly seen as only half the ideal framerate, either on the handset or on a PC, so it is not silky smooth but quite acceptable, along the lines of Youtube. From what I remember of the 6233, although the settings and capabilities are almost identical to it, the 5610 has less artifacting and an overall better and smoother video. I have noticed much less of the screen tearing issue where the previous image stays for a portion of a second when you move and the video suddenly jumps over to the next image after moving too quickly.

there was nothing wrong in the datasheets or the the phone's page in nokia site, all what was mentioned is that it can PLAY video's in VGA 30fps, and RECORD in VGA 15fps, the misunderstanding originate from the wishful thinking of the fans of that phone, only S60 smartphones with OMAP strong chips is capable of VGA 30fps currently from nokia.

I believe that the iPod's sound quality is only average from reviews that I have seen though. Sony and Creative MP3 players give better sound quality, so you can use the full potential of your earphone. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Back on topic again: I'm disappointed that the fps of the video recording on the 5610 Xpress Music is 15 fps. I would rather have QVGA at 30 fps rather than VGA at 15 fps. Definitely QCIF. QVGA is 320 x 240 pixels and CIF is 352 x 288 pixels which are similar, so Nokia wouldn't put those two together.

i've also become a proud owner of this cellar phone since friday.. :)
what i can say about the sound part of the phone:
the sound itself is AWESOME, really.. i'm coming from a W810i and the difference is enormous with the same quality earphones.
One thing i don't like so much, when compared to my w810i, is that when i click an artist, i have to chose an album, the option "all albums" to then scroll through any track of the desired artist is not (yet?) available. I didn't have to do anything really than put my songs on the stick (which was a 1 gb in belgium btw) through PC suite, which runs pretty instinctively.

As i said, the sound quality is really really great, i love the interface and the colouring(!) of the incredible 16m colour screen, as well as the slider function.

That having said i still didn't talk about the biggest pro for me, which is the actual body of the phone itself. It's amazing. I've never had such a nice looking phone in my hands before..

The only bad parts i can come up with are the artist->all numbers browsing and the missing torch option, but these are two things that can be softwarematically fixed :)

i think it's actually pretty strange there aren't a lot of reviews out there yet, since i think this really is the phone of the moment, quality, specs and price-wize.. (and yes, before i bought this phone i did a huge investigation through any phone on earth, as i usually do when i'm buying something)

any questions, shoot :p

I too believe that quality comes with price. But from what i see, i think what makes this phone cheaper than other phones with the same features is its PLASTIC build quality.
It really shows when you compare the 6500 slide with the 5610, same everything except its build cover, and compare the price difference, about ~AU$100? I think they did that becuase the phone is aimed at the youth age group so that they can afford it. :D

Read through the thread and you'll see several user reviews including mine. They help because they show you the bad parts of the mobile, unlike other sites which emphasize the pros part more thann the cons part.
Just wait for a few more weeks(if you can) for a decent review by mobile-review, pesonally i trust only their reviews because they are honest and give you loads of images and criticizing in a good way.

Hey guys,

Does the 5610 keypad show any signs of scratching after you open/close the slide many times?

I ask because people in the 6500 Slide thread are complaining that this scratching happens to their phones pretty easily (and often).

Since the 5610 and 6500S share the same general specs, I'm concerned that they might share the same scratching issue...?
