ill start off...

1) this one is also for m600 users: How do you find the keypad?? do you easily get used to it? and can you really type fast with lesser mistakes??

2) can you navigate around the phone using only the arrows found in the keypad?? cause i noticed there is a left and right arrow at the bottom part...

3) and do you think it is a scratch-prone phone?? specially the back part?

thanks! :jump:

1. the keypad is ok.. i can type quite fast...
2. yes.. all the menus that required a left/right navigation can be used with those small arrows :D
3. i dont know

1) Keypad is a great leap from the one found on the M600, as i can further explain, all the keys are leveled upward, more tactile and feedback response is good. you can call the material semi-glossy (if i can put it tha way) but no serious smudges appear.

2) small arrows enable straff left and right through the menu, but believe me the jog wheel is much more handy. if you try to use these small arrows, you feel the handset unsecurely inbalanced.

3) the back part of the device doesn't pick up scratches from any surface. the combination of metal and quality plastic is of a great use.
PS: i keep on resting my thumb over the nob (for attaching the string to it), it gives the idea that it is a button to be pressed :)

overall, it's a very solid device. i tried to open many apps , and couldn't face any problem with it. no sudden automatic rebooting for clearing RAM.

what i wanted it to have? : a joypad !

IMO, i give it an 8/10

what i wanted it to have? : a joypad !

this is also my worry...is it really hard to use it without a joypad?? or you'll easily get used to it after sometime? does the lack of a joypad affect the quality of usage?

bobcat.. lets talk about the SMS menu... how you navigate through the inbox/sent box/drafts menus with the jog dial !?! :D

mobick

how??? is it difficult?

HABEEB

is imposible.. the jogdial is for up/down movement... if you wanna navigate sideways you have to use the <- ->

i'll take that with a pinch of fun. are you serious man ?
should you be using a list menu , or a grid one, the scroll wheel works on both, and of course it scrolls (upward, and Downward) in the messaging menu.
tou select tabs (left and right) i simply touch the tab (it's a touch screen man :) to ease up your life.

to summ it up. the left and right small arrows found at the bottom, shouldn't be there at first place. and if you decided to make use of them, do this using both hands (one for handling the device, the other for pressing the arrows)

For the person who's worrying about the lack of joypad.
at first, you'll miss it. but believe me when i say so, the moment you hold the device, you automatically adapt to it.
PS: for those who previously used M600/W950, the best thing about the P1i in ergonomics, would be the jog wheel.
in M600, the Jog wheel was protected (illogically ) by a semi rounded plastic edge. which prevented the jog usability. in P1, no such edge, and the jog wheel is absolutely adorable.

can you do it with your fingers?? or you still have to use the stylus??

oh thanks for that! :)

HABEEB

yes.. can be done with the fingers as prototype_bobcat said... but that with the grease trap that the m600 display is wont make you happy.. so you have to take out the stylus.. boring! :D so i just press one of those arrows keys...

mobick

seems like you are really bored with your m600, uh? :D

HABEEB

not yet.. is quite a nice and discreet phone..
the idea is that are certain menus that can be accessed just with the <- -> arrows.. the contacts with more than one phone number... the sms inbox/outbox/etc... i hate touching the display especially those tiny menus...

prototype_bobcat

you can use your fingers man. it's true that it's a touch screen, but it doesn't differentiate between a human being touch or a plastic nudge :)

as HABEEB said, some times it gets a bit annoying to touch some tiny buttons on the screen, but the stylus is there at your disposal.

wish i could do a review about this phone (for all the members), unfortunately, my work is getting the most of my time.

cheers

I have today played with a P1.
If you compare my P990 with a P1, I keep my P990.
IMHO P990 has a better keyboard, I make a lot of calls everyday and a big
quality keyboard are important. P1 rocker keys feels more unsecure.
P1 softkeys I dont like either, how reliably will that be after 2 years
of heavy using.
I was hopeing that 5way jogdial wheel was back, but no.
My old P900 with 5way jogdial wheel was was a perfect way to control the
UI. (I will never use a phone without the wheel)
One thing I didnt test was if you could use on screen keyboard in landscape mode like in Ericsson smartphone R380?
A dedicated locking key and camera lens cover is also better in P990.

I will wait for P3 that will be a full IMS-phone, but P1 has pre-IMS
with WLAN to GSM roaming.

this is a small review about the p1i. i should not though that i'm doing it for the sake of sharing information. no biased opinions or fanboyism is welcomed

i'll sum up the major points under specified titles and comparing it to my previous P990, along with a grade over 10 based on my personal opinion.bear in mind that i've been using it for only 4 days and things might pop up during extended usage time.

Design:
design is a subjective matter, but some models aquire common feedbacks and the p1i is no exception. the combination of metallic feel and semi-glossy plastic is very good and fashionista. it suits business men perfectly. the choice of RED instead of Blue or Green for keypad digits turned out to be very cool.
better than my P990 (with flip removed).
my grade: 8/10

Ergonomics:
having used the P990 for an extended period, i should say that the P1i is the winner here. the keys (and some dislike the Rocker two sided letters) are easy to use. semy glossy, with dim white backlighting and red coloring in the middle. compared to my friend's m600, the whole keypad is somehow leveled upward, more tactile. i must say, it grows into you in a manner that makes you want to press them on a concurrent basis.
no raised plastic edge to protect the jog wheel, and this is absolutely amazing, as you will regain the joy (missed in previous M600) of using the wheel.
on the back part of the device, there's a sliver trim that houses the loudspeaker, and to be honest, it's very elegant.
better than the keypad on the p990.
my grade: 8/10

Software:
it's a decision every person has to make in light of experiencing a UIQ device. i like it now more than i ever did (when using the P990) thanks to one main thing: RAM size.
SE engineers did the right thing here. on P990, i had nightmares just to run the golf game (Vijay Singh), the phone rebooted several times for memory refreshing.... but here it's a different story. you get to run mutliple applications, and switching between them in a breeze. the whole software is more stable than previous generation.
definitely better than P990
my grade: 8/10

Audio capabilities:
this is the main source of anxiousness for lots of members. but breath easy fellas, the media player outputs some decent sounds through either the included earphones or any SE W series ones. support for ID3ags is smooth but i exprienced some (unknown code) when playing songs with tiltes in different language. video mode is straight forward, but very lucid on the adorable screen.
i hadn't had the chance to extensively try my bluetooth stereo headset with it, but syncing between both was a breeze. (ps: i have sony's earloop bluetooth stereo headset)
i have to emphasis, that 2 movies didn't work correctly, there was an audio output only and no video. (maybe encoding matter, will check later)
better than P990, (audio output is much much better)
my grade: 7/10

Camera
the camera's performance is O K. don't expect a cybershot performance from this one, still, autofocus and 2 led flash are of great use, and produce decent shots.
i never liked the camera interface on the P990. and unfortunately it resides in this model. you have to touch the screen for zoomin, or brighting up the shot. and this in turn might affect the steadiness of your hands.
business card scanner is pretty much like P990, but i felt it processed cards in a a shorter time. (will check this lately)
my grade: 7/10

connectivity:
everything is normal here. i should emphasis thought that Wifi worked fluently when picking wirless signals (in restaurants..) the brower is very handy, and supports horizontal viewing. but experienced minor problems with flash plugins and some java scirpted pages.
my grade: 8/10

Overall:
this model is what the P990 should have been in the first place. the company was listening to us (members) when we suffered from memory related problems, and worked on all other aspects.
i should make a notice here, based on the company's effort for producing such good device (without joystick or navipad) leaves a good impression on a rumoured UIQ non TS device with joystick.

i have a problem :), earlier this month i saw the w960, and liked so much (8gb walkman), and planning to get it. but couldn't bear the P anymore, so i picked this beauty as a transitional phase. you might be wondering where's my complaint? it is that i'm actually :love:falling in love with this model, and changing my mind on getting the W960 . not a serious problem.. :P

hope this primitive review was informtaive enough.
cheers

I had my P1 since friday last week and I can just say that I agree with you in all your comments, this phone is growing for me for every day I have it.

I just want to say that regarding the the camera part I don't agree with you, I find the interface very good.
You never have to touch the screen for anything (almost).
In camera mode, press 0 (zero), then you get a map/description on how to control the camerafunctions on the screen.
You use 3 & 6 to zoom in and out,
you use * to turn on and off the flash
You use the jogdial for brighning up the shot.
And so on!

I did a download test with my Sony Ericsson P1i.
I went to a Swedish site and downloaded a 13.50 MB file onto my Sony Ericsson P1i.
That took me around 45 seconds while it took me just 18 seconds to my laptop. My average download speed was around 670 kb/s with laptop and around 300 kb/s with P1i.
