View Full Version : P1i bugs, issues or other points that need to be addressed....
He guys,
I know it is a long time ago. I was here. Busy with a lot of new stuff and that takes time I used to be on this forum. Ones every week I am checking it but it is a bad time for news anyhow so.......
I had a question for P1i users. Can anyone of you mention me issues they find with the device? It should be reproduceable issues and problems you find any day. For instance crashes or hick-ups in the software. Or for instance the fact you do not like the cover delivered with the device or the data cable is too short.
I would like to know all your feedback if that is possible. Give arguments with the issues so that I can respond to that. I found issues myself already, but any input is welcome. I have stated the same question at Esato so feel free to comment on both topics....
I am planning to do this more often in the future with more products from Sony Ericsson. It will deliver a strong feedback from users relating SE products. I will gonna start this also with other brands.
Thanks in advance,
MR
if you wouldnt mind...can you state some of the flaws youve found in the phone?? that will really help me in deciding whether I should buy it or not...thanks!

nice productive thread MR.
anyways, it's my third day experience using this device. and so far i can assure you that i haven't had any complaint whatsoever.
but i think the output sound (via external speakers that is) is on the average level as i missed some calls on the street.
keys imlplementation is a great leap from M600, the cover screams Quality all the way, RAM increase is outstanding.
it takes some time though for booting up. you might not do it frequently unless you install some 3rd party apps that require rebooting.
bottom line:
great device.

You will have my feedback next week MR.
This is a really nice idea of you and I hope Sony Ericsson, deal with the problems as soon as they appear.
Thanks guys. It will be a first step in external testing for companies in which I can use you guys!
MR
Maybe, I've found the first bug...
Calendar-Alarm: The sound of Alarms of synchronised (on pc created)events start, although calendar-alarms are set silent in the control-panel and in the calendar-settings. On the phone created event-alarms work right.

MR... in the last 2 weeks I have noticed the following some are random though
here's a recap of the issues i have found over 2 weeks and my wishlist..
-Speakerphone may be garbled when you press the speaker on button before the call is connected. If the call is connected and you switch to speaker phone there is no issue.
-camera has frozen about twice... usually when i get an sms in the camera app.
-also a few times the captured preview is currupted the softket part of the pic is missing. (it saves properly though just display rendering is messed, happened about 3x now)
-at times it can take a really really long time to enter the video folder when the phone recorded videos are saved (or mapped to) about 1 min.
-SMS timestamps are wrong vs. clock time on Rogers Wireless in Canada. (Happened with previous SE phones after one of the firmware updates.
Looks like SMS is being rebooted in GMT time and not adjusting
-----------------------------
items that should be addressed IMO (wishlist)
-P1i does not detect as a removeable drive on a mac.
-you cannot delete with the back arrow button in the filemanager but you can in the picture gallery. (consistency i think is important and should be addressed)
-when marking messages multiple messages if you open one be accident the marked ones all become unmarked. (a little annoying would be nice if they could address)
-the picture gallery needs more consistency in the views.
in the DCIM folder (camera/video pics) the images all display as a thumbnails 3X3. it doesn't do this anywhere else when using the picture gallery. you should be able to swtich views for all picture gallery area.. to list, icon, details etc.. (like k790 for example)
-improve camera exposure
-add h 2.64 support?
-hardkeys configured to change tracks or other music functions.. like activating teh * and # keys to change tracks.. the 0 plays and pauses now.
-support for reading embedded album art would be nice
-how about a standby clock?

I have experienced issues with camera as well
Happened when I previewed and then decided to delete my picture. It froze and I coudln't do anything but removing the battery.
Once I got a graphical glitch or whatever I should call it but it was just for a second and then everything went back to normal.
My wishlist:
*Faster camera startup, it takes tad too long to get it started (just me being picky).
*Completely new media player because the present one is very ugly
*And as shaolinmonk, mentioned: hotkeys configured to manage your music experience.
And can anyone understand why they haven't made:
-hardkeys configured to change month or day in the different calender modes and like shaolinmonk said change tracks in music mode (since they made the wheel change volyme). The * and # keys are arrows!!
with this things i have read....i am having a second thought of buying the phone...

lol these things are so minor that i doubt you'd be impacted to the point it frustrates you...
i could easily make a bug list and recommended things for any phone that i've owned or played with..

wheew! now that makes me wanna buy it again...LOL!
the cover screams Quality all the way, RAM increase is outstanding.
While I agree that this is an outstanding device, and ultimately the best phone I have owned ever, I disagree with yours statement that the cover is quality "all the way".
The front is good. The rubbery backcover is also good, but you can see they are using silver painted plastic on the back, which in time will start peeling and become translucent plastic like many K700s, S700s, P900 all the way to P990. It's disappointing for me that they mar what is a great phone with such a small cheap move.
Is it only me or does the Night Mode camera setting have no effect on the picture. In the viewer you can see the preview becoming lighter but after taking the actual picture there is no difference with the normal mode...
Other camera things, I really don't like the way it lets you know it's focussed. What's wrong with the plain old green rectangle (at least you see what it focussed on) and an auto-flash setting would be nice too. Not too fond of the camera so far (auto light balance does seem to be off pretty often too in my case).
No way to fast forward in the music player using buttons? Keeping the next/previous track buttons pressed doesn't work... Would be nice (especially since I have mixes of 2 hours... Also, clicking in the progress bar sometimes 'restarts' the song instead of going to the specified point).
Sometimes my headset stops responding, can't pause, change volume or anything else... Phone itself keeps on working just fine.
Also the multi-selection, accidental opening one file (message, picture) and loosing the selection is annoying indeed.
Other things... Alarm not working when phone is in silent mode. Alarms only ringing shortly and once (same with timer) and not being able to modify that? Could be me needing to delve into it a bit more though ;) No bugs, but annoyances...
Other then that I really like the phone... no regrets at all so far!
Hi MR,
with the latest firmware R6E30 in combination with the latest BlackBerry Connect client, a new functionality has been implemented : the corporate lock, meaning that a specfic password lock has been implemented to force the corporate IT policy and not anymore the inactivity lock function of the phone.
The following issues need to be adressed to SE :
1. in the CARKIT mode (connected to HCA60) the corporate lock should be switched off, as it is dangerous to type a 8 digit password to unlock the phone before being able to make a call. They should do it like for the inactivity lock which is also disabled in the CARKIT mode
2. in case the corporate lock is active and an alarm (calendar or other) is programmed, you have first to unlock the phone before being able to snoozing the alarm event. I'd prefer either to have the alarm screen visible even if the corporate lock is active (like for phone calls) or using the hardware button to snooze the alarm in case the lock is active.
Hope that SE can fix these points in future firmware releases.
Kind Regards
Marc

These sound really minor... if you want to hear about bugs I could tell you about my N95... it's why I'm getting a P1i!
Anyway, I'll be getting mine in a few days so I'll be able to contribute to this thread!

fixed in P990 in latest FWs , surely they'll fix it in P1 too.

and you'll be contributing considerably more than you think. read this review of the P1 from Mobile Burn:
Conclusion
The Sony Ericsson P1 has tortured me. I wanted to like it. I expected to like it. It has a great spec sheet, it is good looking, and it fits ever so easily into even the smallest of pockets. Yet, I do not like the P1. I've had too many problems with the device. WiFi has been a constant issue and the lack of EDGE support makes that all the worse. The disappearing inboxes are vexing, and the Exchange ActiveSync support is not quite up to snuff. Worst for me, perhaps, is that the menus and applications are simply too difficult to navigate without using a stylus. The scroll-wheel has proven itself inadequate, and the deep set on-screen softkeys are inconvenient - at best.
The end result is that I cannot recommend the P1. There are just too many devices on the market that are faster, easier to use, and have fewer problems. Few devices can offer the combination of an auto-focus camera and a QWERTY keyboard, but unless that combination is the only thing that will satisfy you, there are many devices that do messaging, multimedia, and mobile web browsing better than the P1.
Not Recommended
Pros: Compact form factor, auto-focus camera, reasonable QWERTY keyboard, great battery life
Cons: Messaging issues, WiFi problems, no EDGE/HSDPA, tri-band GSM only, slow CPU, questionable UI organization

I think it won't be that bad...
The cons mentioned are mainly features (lack of edge/hsdpa, triband only) and taste (strange ui). The slow cpu, yeah... wish it was faster as well but when all the used apps are loaded in memory the phone is simply pretty fast.
Sure, it's not perfect but it's certainly not as bad as some make it appear...
My P1i is performing flawlessly, the only mod that I would recommend is to use the headset from the W950i as this gives better sound quality and remote track and volume control for the mp3 player. :jump::jump::jump:
My only gripe is that the speaker phone lacks a little volume. :-/

How strange, I find it very loud and sometimes too loud.
Well I've had the P1i for 2 days now and some of the annoying things are java apps not working as well as they do on my N95 like Gmail or Google Maps (touch screen doesn't work with Google Maps at all).
Also, the camera seems to have this greenish tint on the pictures towards the right side of the pics, which has been brought up a lot here: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=153093
30 days to decide whether I want to keep it or not... we'll see :)

Hang on Mc while I adjust my ear trumpet. ;)
I suppose that I am comparing it with my Ameo which has fog horn volume. :D
I have never not been able to hear the incoming caller clearly but feel that the P1i does lack volume compared to my M600i.
My P1i as I have said is performing flawlessly, however after numerous attempts to set up an MMS account I have been unable to do so. My phone software is CXC 162037 R9G007 and I am running an unlocked phone on the Orange network. Email, SMS and the net work fine but I have been unable to set up MMS. I have tried to download settings from the Sony Ericsson site, direct from Orange and also tried to input settings manualy. All have failed.
SMS timestamps are wrong
So I'm not the only one! Happened today for the first time.
Has anyone updated their firmware yet?

Agree with most of the minor things mentioned here but overall happy after a months use. Two major annoying things though:
- Alarm doesn't work if you turn the phone off (confirmed by SE support) so you need to keep phone on all night and risk get woken up by drunken friends 3AM in order to wake up in the morning.
- It crashes 1 out of 3 times when Bluetoothing pictures to or from laptop.

YES! And it wiped out all of the original settings (pop3 accounts, wifi settings etc etc) so think twice before doing it.. /M
Rennstam thats why u do a back up for all your files and setting before you do an update.
i also have the same problem with the sms time stamp on my P990i and W950i

Is it only the settings that are all cleared with the update or does it affect the user data as well? Like Tasks, Calendar entries, Phone book material (Birthdays, emails?). Because it'll take a long time before I back up all those things!

I´d find it nice if there was some indicator, if you´re browsing through the web that would show if youre connected over wifi or gsm/umts.. in germany youre paying about 8 euros for 1mb over net, so surfing via gsm/umts is expensive as hell!
other than that my phone restarts for better performance, dont know if this has been changed in the latest firmware though?
all other things have been mentioned already..
thanks btw for making this thread mr, I really appreciate this!!
keep up the good work!
Hi,
I had the Errcsson R380 and the P900 and expected the same ease of use from the P1i. Although I could elaborate on this topic, I would rather focus to my greatest problem. Every time I connect the P1i to the desktop, my contacts get deleted/removed from the phone (393 of them to be precise)! Going to Sync Manager -> Advanced Sycnh -> Overwrite Mobile Phone, the contacts are put back on the phone. Disconnect the phone and reconnect it (immediately or otherwise), everything is removed again!
I have downloaded Sony Ericsson PC Suite for Smartphones, version: 1.3.22: no improvement.
My contacts are part of a personal folder under Outlook.
Please help!

It wipes out everything, but that's completely as expected and I've never seen a phone dealing with firmware updates differently.
Simply back everything up, perform the update and then restore... Nothing strange.

Thanks. I did a back up using the smartphone software, flawlessly updated the firmware and than restored everything. It even restored my call list, which was quite surprising!

I have it for about 2 months now. & with an everyday normal usage.
so far everything works very fine to me. i made a normal restart only 3 times.
The only issue is with a green tint in the camera & i believe its mentioned extensively in an another forum. otherwise, it works as perfectly as its designed for.
Today i met with a 1st application crash. but i believe its the application's fault since its still under development.

Based on the internet accounts you have created, when connecting with wifi, and after your done, It goes under the category of the network you connected to. For instance, I have a home network and wifi at school too and the phone automatically connects to which ever is available at the time when i open the browser. when doing that, It shows the amount of data under "default wifi account" and after your session is finished, when I go under the category of "school " or "home" I can see the amount of data transfered and under "default wifi account" I can see the total.
But why would you want to know the data amount over wifi? unless its not free for you.
Hi guys!
I'm a newbie hr in the forum.
Its a good thing that you guys have these site.
I'm from the Phils and here in the Phils its a major Phone mania (Nokia, SE, MOTO, Samsung etc)
Nway enough with the background.
I got my P1 with the latest firmware last week.
I have some questions and I hope you can help me (my last PDA fone was SE P910i then went to the Nseries...IM A NOKIA LOVER..BEFORE..)
Camera...
looking at it right now, it looks okey but i don't see the focus thingy (the square thingy in the middle when your taking pictures?)
I check the settings (infinite...) and it set to the normal AF settings.
How do i see it like the normaL W series and Kseries?
Sounds? Yeah I agree with some post here regarding the player though we have to set in mind that its a PDA phone not a Wseries so some options was not put by SE...
Nway how do you change the skin to black or orange or something?
Memory.
I have a 512 package.
It sjust wierd that i have 12 photos and 39 mp3s... and my only memory left is 150mb? wierd... the songs ranges to 4-5 mb only and the picture is 5mp economy.. so i dunno... Where is my other memory? no apps, no videos.. etc...
Hey guys help me out here...
Il be checking later Eastern time US.
(i work in a callcenter so you know how it goes)

@camera: In the bottom left there is a small camera icon which is yellow when focussing and green when focussed... It's just how it works and you can't change the camera looks.
@sound: only way to change backgrounds is by changing the entire theme of the phone
@memory: better plug the card in a cardreader or connect your phone in file mode so you can take a look at what fills up your memory card. Quite impossible for us to say what's causing it...
Dagrim1 Thanks alot!!!
@music - im changing every now and then the theme but the music screen is still white. sigh. plain old white.
@camera - good to go! i saw it!
@memory - yeah thanks! actually i checked it awhile ago. and to my stupidity, i loaded a folder of pics with powerpoint presentation inside thats causes extra 40-60mb extra. hahaha
this is such a nice site!
