Sony drops the price of the PS3
The company knocks $100 off the 60 GB model and introduces a new 80 GB version.
Ending weeks of speculation, Sony officially announced a new $499 retail price for their 60 GB Playstation 3 on Sunday, effective immediately. They also introduced a larger 80 GB model at the $599 price point, which will come packaged with the racing game Motorstorm and will be available to North American consumers this August.
"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," explained SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton.
"The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."
The company also stated that 120 PS3 titles are slated to hit shelves before the end of the fiscal year, including third-party heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4. :D :D
More information is expected to be announced at this week's E3 2007 expo.

Finally, Sony :jump: The PS3 is the best console of this generation (at least technicaly speaking), but it has very high priced :(
Hopes it helps the "poor" sales it have had until now :)

because of microsoft's recent admission that the xbox is inherently flawed and has a massively high failure rate, and which is speculated to cost them more than $1.15 billion before tax.
i mean, what are you going to choose?:
-an xbox, knowing that at least 2 or 3 times in the first year you are going to have to send it back to MS for repair.
-a wii and a (now cheaper) PS3 that have less than a 1% failure rate
i'm sure the admission from MS isn't going to do their sales any favours, and then sony announces a price cut for the PS3 :eek:.
correct me if im wrong but i read that wiis were outselling ps3s by 4:1, is the reason for the price drop?
but MS has already slashed 360's rates...100$ approx.
its cost is 15k here now (official) which is about 375USDs.
price discrepancy will still be the same. but given the problems with the XBox as u state i guess the problems will persist irrespective of the cost diff....hmmmm!

indup,thats a normal thing to happen,its cheaper,but i do admit the wii is much more fun to play with,but playstation is better in features!

anyway, i would love to see how sales of this go after the price drop, i reckon the PS3 is fantastic, but for some other people it is to expensiv to justify owning

However in Japan PS3 is simply failing miserably, Wii outsells PS3 by 6:1 to 7:1 :eek:

Eh? It's poor old Sony you mean. They are playing catch up and have very little to offer this year. The 360 in comparison has a shed load of great games already available and a stonking Xmas line-up (Gotham 4, Halo 3, Bioshock, Alan Wake etc etc etc).

People choose a console that has the game they want to play. You will be able to pick up a 360 Halo 3 pack, GTA IV and another game for the price of the PS3 console come Xmas.
People vote with their wallets.
Dont count the PS2 out of the game either, in some places its overselling the Wii and the 360.
And become a big headache for Sony. It's really ironical, Sony's best-selling electronic product has now become one of Sony's greatest enemies and they just don't know what to do about it :insane:

PS2 is still selling well in most countries. And remember it's the best-selling console from all times (over 120 million sold) :)
So, Sony has made a lot of profit with the PS1, PS2 and PSP. And now that the expensive PS3 is reducing its price, more people might buy it :)
square enix games will save it, kingdom hearts II (a ps2 game) was the SECOND best selling game of the 2006....
i expect to the next final fantasy and metal gear solid to be that great too.
ps3 dropping price will likely make me get one before estimated :P
PS2 is still selling well in most countries.
PS2 is selling better than PS3 in most countries, which is really a pain in the back for Sony :spy:
