too long wait and a really huge price...
SE managed to kill this one :(

I beg to differ... The price isn't all that bad concerning the features. I agree it's not a phone that will attract P990i/M600 since the changes are probably not big enough to justify the price but I think it's a very nice option for people searching for a new smartphone.

I now own a Nokia N73 but am quite missing the touchscreen and keyboard so this is a perfect next phone for me. Although I must admit I see this more as a 1-year phone...

of course not...and compare with P990 release price...if the the P1 had the prices everyone was talking before (more than 600 euros), that would be a mistake by SE...but the actuall prices are very good for what the P1 offers, no doubt about that

will the "always-have-to-say-something-negative-about-SE" crowd please relax a little bit? its one thing if you dont happen to like this particular phone, fair enough, you dont have to buy it.

but attacking its launch price, which by most measures seems to be very reasonable (compared with both previous SE smartphone efforts and devices by other makers) is just pathetic.

mmm... the n95 had a release price of $750, right? (and is lower by now). So if we compare $750 to $900 (for the P1), shouldn't we compare the features of both phones too? I think the question one should be asking is - does the p1 have enough features to make it 150 dollars more than the n95?

i just pre-ordered my P1i from Axiom in the UAE(im the first in line), the guy said it should be out in a week :)

but im still debating whether i should get the P1 or the E90 :( i love the P1 form factor(i miss the D-Pad and HSDPA), and the E90 is bulky and heavy, yet it has ever since feature i'd like to have......though i still think im more inclined to getting the P1i.

where can i find some photos taken by the P1?(besides the GSMarena review)

I fail to see your thinking.
What justified you to fork out more like $900 for n95 when you seem to be a greedy person, was it the GPS function itself perhaps??
Please don't tell us lies about its average price, that sounds more like average price for Sony Ericsson W960i.
The average price for Sony Ericsson P1i is more like ?490 while the lowest price can be found in Sweden for just ?475 (~$655).

Are you sure you aren't mixing it up with P990i?

There is no T9 prediction and don't let yourself be intimidating by the lack of it because you will be amazed how easy it is to write like it's meant to.

$750 was the release price of the n95 in the US. (From Nokia stores not from carriers). I just compared that, with the $900 posted above, by the thread starter.

If the n95 was at $900 there, I guess it's more expensive in Sweden.

cool, thanks guys. Does each buttons go through 2 letters? as in tap twice to get the second letter, or do i have to press on the edge of each button to type that particular letter? ....i didn't mean numeric buttons T9.

The new Blackberry has T9 on it's new phones, each button has two letters, you can type by double tapping for the second letter, or use T9 to predect....you know what i mean?

EDIT: I passed by Axiom telecom in the UAE(abu dhabi), and the guy told me that they're getting the P1i today, it'll cost 2800 dirhams, that's approx. $760...i was hoping for less, but im not surprised it's selling for that price. I'll be getting mine today if it's released since i'm the first on the list :jump:

^ that is a bit much. cheapest I've seen so far for the P1 in Sweden is USD 670, or EURO 480 (including shipping). of course, thats from an online store. regular stores always tend to charge around USD 100 more for any given phone.

For reference the N95 is currently 670 EURO and the E90 is 790 EURO (both including shipping).

so far so goog, the P1i is awesome, and came is better than i expected, im not used to UIQ so that gave me a bit of a hard time, and the keyboard took some time to get used to....but overlla im happy with it, and i'll have a better judgement in a few days, but since im hitting the samc now, i'll report back tomorrow from work(i'll just pretend i'm working lol)

btw, the phone has an incredible size, smaller than i thought, light and extremely pocketable! :)

i just need to practice more on the keyboard and figure in the ins and outs of the P1i

1. The screen is brilliant

2. So far it's fast, but then again i don't have much pics or videos on it, so i really can't tell, but so far the response is fast, very very minimal lag.

3. You mean the speaker loudness? it's very loud, at least loud enough or me to turn it down.

4. I'll post some pictures and videos when i go home since i'm at work at the moment....i test a few pics at home and the quality pretty good, not N95/K800 good, but very good for a phone which is not focused on photography. I'll post pics when i get back home.

5. I got it for 2899 dirhams from Axiom, expensive, but this is a very generic price for high end new phones in this country, they just gotta rip you off! :(

enjoy the floor of pictures, the close up pics were taken using Macro mode...i gotta admit the P1i takes great pics! i also think the color reproduction is deeper and much better than the K800 colors.

Video clip on the way, and for some reason the P1i 3Megapixel option is blacked out, so i took those pics at 2MP, regardless, they're still great pics! enjoy!

I'm going to wait for the price to drop a little.......The price has already come down fast!! On Ebay, the P1 was originally $779USD, but now there are prices already down to $558USD:jump:.....that's pretty good. I'm not going to wait for the bottom, probably around $550 I'll buy it.

And people were complaining about it being overpriced :lol:

We know SE: launch price is high, in 2-3 weeks it became afordable.

$558 is a very good price for such a device IMO :D

dunno about the 3MP, maybe it required some other settings? i dunno!

also, in the camera menu, it asks to save the pics on Phone memory, Memory Stick or Memory Stick preferd! :confused: what does the last option mean? :confused:

Hi, Marwan i read in other reviews that when making a call the person on the other side of the line can hear you fine, but that the volume of the P1 earpiece is very low so you don't hear the person very well, is this true?
I have to say that the M600i i owned had the same problem.

the P1 is an interim solution made to extend the life of the platform currently SE use for their smartphones. they took what was good about the P990 & the M600, improved the OS and added more RAM (and hopefully sorted out most of the bugs).

strategically, it was the right thing for SE to do considering that the p990/m600/w950 are all but dead and the P3 wont see the light of day any time soon. if it werent for the P1, SE would have nothing in the smartphone segment.

I personally think its an attractive package; nice design, good features and the price is right (it is a high end phone, after all).

Can't wait anymore...thinking about running down to the local store and pay $610+tax.....still a good price IMO. Since really the only thing that I'm really going to miss on this phone compared to the E90 IMO is the 850 and EDGE.

From the pics Marwan posted, it seems to me the phone takes awsome photos...IMO the SE camera's always take better photo's than Nokia.

No doubt and I think the E90 is an awesome phone, but too big for me. The N95 pictures seem to "computerized" with very sharp colors and not real. Still awesome, just IMO SE has always had the more realistic picture quality.

If Nokia ever decided to reduce the size of the E90.....it would be one killer phone.

I see your P1i doesn't have an arabic keyboard. Can you check if it has an Arabic interface or arabic text input?

I read in esato.com that there was a prototype with Arabic... they also said that Arabic language was also mentioned in the P1's white paper (which is true). I found this post in another forum with pictures of the arabic interface (a first for UIQ phones).

Hey Marwan why???? I'm interested cause I've played with the E90, but I went with the P1 since the E90 is same as my N95, except that that it has a keyboard. I went with the P1 cause of the fact that the form factor was a lot better than the E90. How was music player compared to the E90? Hey Marwan why???? I'm interested cause I've played with the E90, but I went with the P1 since the E90 is same as my N95, except that that it has a keyboard. I went with the P1 cause of the fact that the form factor was a lot better than the E90. How was music player compared to the E90? you're right, the K800 has the better camera compared to the N95, but the colors on the N95 are more deeper and vibrant. But overall i would choose the K800 camera over the N95.

I loved the form factor of the P1i, the phone is small and extremely stylish and elegant! but i could not get over the fact that jog-dial that SE insists on using, i hate it with a passion, it's simply not as convenient as a D-pad/joystick...why is SE refusing to through a pad on the P series is beyond me!

then you have that stupid "Back" button under the jog-dial which was plain annoying to press, and worst of all(i could get over everything except this last point....THE KEYBOARD!!!!! i cannot believe that each button has 2 levels of pressing on each side! it's a disaster....why not give us T9 with that keyboard like the latest Blackberry? every time i typed messages on the P1i i kept making a lot of mistakes. or better yet, give me a numeric keypad like a regular phone and i could have kept the phone easily!(W960)

these were my main complaints....i also didn't think the UI was very refined, it felt(like the P990) very jumbled up and complex....and this is coming out of someone that likes deep OS.

so there you have it, i sold the P1i...i'll never consider a UIQ again, unless the W960 complete blows me away, and i'm only saying this because it has a numeric keypad and real soft keys that should make my life easier.

for now i'll just stick to my favorite SE phones....the "K" series.

Heh, the keyboard is the main reason I want one! It's simply the best mobile QWERTY I've ever used! I find normal numeric pads slow and clumsy now, so I'd much rsther have a QWERTY, and from all the ones I've had the M600i has been the fastest and most accurate.

I agree with you....it's the #1 reason I want the P1i.....The M600i keyboard was the best I had used and I could type the fastest with that keyboard. I just thought the M600i was brilliant because of the form factor and size so I was all excited about the P1i when it came out because I desperately wanted a camera on that phone.

Yes the UI has issues, but I find the S60 UI has issues as well.....like having to edit a contact to see all the details!! This drives me nuts. Similarly when you open an email/message, the background matches with the theme, which sometimes is hard to read.

for me it's not very convenient, like i said the jog dial and back buttons killed it for me? why does SE insist on using a stupid jog dial? why not use a Dpad/joystick instead? it would sell much more that way.

plus UIQ feel very cluttered and unorganized!

For a mere ?475 do I get a phone with everything you possibly can pack in a phone this small.
I also get Wayfinder 7 with 12 months subscription and GPS receiver, so no crippled GPS navigation with unreliable route planner.
Oh, I forgot that you don't get voice guiding to your GPS service with N95, so more money for an already expensive phone.

I think you are misunderstanding me.....I'm not talking about seeing the contact information. What I'm talking about is when you have the contact information open, some lines like notes or email address are too long so you don't see the whole entry. When I go to a contact's specific detail, for example Notes, and press the center D pad it gives me 4 options...voice call, internet call, video call, and edit. it does not show me all the lines I have written down. On the P1, I open a contact, jump over to notes, and all the information is there.

p.s. what's with the harsh tone:confused:....I'm just voicing my opinion here. There's no right or wrong. If you like the S60 UI, that's great for you.

Sony Ericsson P1i supports 802.11 B standard while N95 supports G.
Could you do a simple test and download something to both Sony Ericsson P1i and to N95.
I want you to measure the download time on both platforms.
My question here is G standard abundance or a necessity for better surf and download experience?

in the EU the P1i is around ~200 EUROS cheaper than the N95 (according to Pricerunner). theyre currently priced ?470 (P1i) and ?670 (N95) in the cheapest online stores.

I apologize for the offensive language used but the guy is clearly a troll with an agenda. now perhaps I shouldnt take things so seriously but on these forums its just gotten to a point recently where your (the mods) "laissez-faire" attitude has become a bit of a problem.

Here in The Netherlands for instance the cheapest price for a new P1i in a (online)store is ?453 (http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/158502/Sony-Ericsson-P1i.html), while a new N95 in a (online)store costs ?614 (http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/146533/Nokia-N95.html). And of course in many countries people get a phone with a lot of discount when renewing their contracts, so importing it from a cheaper country is for many people out of the question.

Camera may be one thing which I can understand.

Slimmer, Less bulky - I mean if you remove the flip keypad of P990i, it looks lot slimmer.

Ram, faster, stable - Need to wait for the real feedback

Bluetooth headset/A2DP - I thought P990i is A2DP.

But I would rather go for full QWERTY Key-board with optional flip-keypad P990i over P1i because I probably get almost similar features for less.

About RAM, it makes a lot of difference and I can assure you that you will notice much less lag in Sony Ericsson P1i. I have tried one myself and got a P990i and the difference is noticeable.

I've had my P1i since friday last week and I'm starting to love the phone. It took me a day to get used to the ekeys, since I'm used to a Palm Treo 750 and a SE W950. But after a day I type just as fast as on my Treo.
Before I had different phones for work and private time, but now it feel like I have one phone for all times!
It has got all the good things from W950 and P990 (I had one for 3 months but sold it since it wtas to bulky and tooooo many bugs).

It's so much faster then my W950 and no bugs so far! I can open ALL programs there is on the phone at the same time wibth no differens in speed on the phone.
The screen seems brighter and much sharper compared to my W950, and more distinct to touch, can be because it's new.
The camera is really good.
The WiFi works excellent.
I bought a 4GB M2 and now I have the same capacity as in my W950!!
The radio and sound is also just as good as in my W950.

The wheel is much more easy to use, it's not coverd behind something anymore and a bit smaller. But the back button is a bit harder to find sometimes.

And it's very good to have more shortcuts on the todayscreen!

And it's great that the pen is more then 1 cm longer then on my W950, almost as long as on my Treo750, just a bit thinner!

And since the back of the phone is a bit rounded it feel so much better holding, it feels smaller then the W950!

The cover of the phone is much more comfortable and feels more exclusive then on the M600/W950, it's a softer surface on the back (like rubber or leather feeling) and real metal on the front.

It accually feels like they are from different generations. If I didn't know, I'd say 5 years apart. My W950 feel plastic, flat, old and boring. The choise of materials and the fitting is so much better on the P1. Really good fitting and quality. The P1 is an AUDI and the W950 is a VOLVO in comparison!

And they finally decided to get rid of the stupid SIM-card holder from M600/W950. That must have been the worst invention SE ever made!

McKinley, that's the option I meant :) I like the way you can drag around the page with the stylus, makes navigation a breeze. It works like that on Opera Mini too, and then feels very iPhone inspired!

Looking at the other prices on that site, I'd expect to find it around ?300-320 at places like CPW when it arrives there.

McKinley, yeah Opera Mini all the way. :) When you connect, doesn't it ask which connection you want to use? I always get this question on my N73. Btw, in Tools > Settings have you enabled "Load images", "Higher image quality" and "Visual effects" en disabled "Fit to width"? It's a much better experience than any browser I've ever used. Btw, does the 2, 4, 6, 8 navigation work on the P1i?!

boys here's what i found in the new firmware so far

This firmware came out last week but wasn't readily available for all regions. I think it's out for most now... Updated mine yesterday.

Have had it on for about 12 hours now...and here are a few findings..

WIFI speed is faster... I'm getting ~2x faster then before according to www.dslreports.com/mspeed I'm hitting about 320kb/sec i was hitting about 160-180KB before... Still about 4x slower then n series and windows mobile but it's a lot better nevertheless..

Overall the phone seems faster in some places...editing contacts for example is faster now... it was quite slow before.

a2dp connection seems slightly stronger.. i got less static and breakups on my walk to work this morning..

otherwise just looks like a minor update probably fixing a few things that i wasn't aware of...

Music player display bug
from what i remember before... if you had 50 track and played them all on shuffle it would say 5/50 then 20/50 when it switched songs.. now it says 5/50 and 6/50 when it shuffles. it still shuffles just the number sequence has changed.

I'll report more as I see...

the safari browser is clearly the best right now... opera mini with the zoom function is really good... opera 9 is suppose to be a kickass browser... let's hope so...
