Nokia 8600 Luna: A definitive design statement with a touch of glass
The timeless beauty of glass highlights the latest evolution of Nokia's most coveted phone series
Espoo, Finland - Building upon a tradition of crafting its most unique and prestigious phones from trend-setting materials like chrome, stainless steel and titanium, Nokia today unveiled the Nokia 8600 Luna, which has been precision engineered from the same material that has inspired both artists and craftsmen for centuries- glass.
The melding of nearly opaque smoked glass with unique, soft-touch stainless steel makes the Nokia 8600 Luna as enchanting to behold as it is a joy to touch. Adding to its mysterious allure, a gentle keypad illumination pulsates from beneath the glass case while the phone awaits a call. Combined with the warmth of its glass and stainless steel body, this "heartbeat" transforms the Nokia 8600 Luna from an inanimate object into a trusted companion with an organic, virtually alive form. When a call does beckon, the signature slide movement is carefully balanced to smoothly raise the ergonomic keypad from within its glass cocoon.
"An obsession to every detail marked each step in the development process of the Nokia 8600 Luna. We took painstaking effort to ensure that the experience delivered by every surface - from the smoothness of glass against the face to the warmth of stainless steel in the palm to the superior tactile feedback of the keypad - would surpass any and all expectations," said Heikki Norta, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. "Even the name holds special significance. Much like the Nokia 8600 Luna that we named in her honor, Luna, the goddess of moonlight, was often represented by the Romans as a mysteriously captivating beauty encircled in a soft, yet radiant light."
The balance of aesthetics and ergonomics found in the design of the Nokia 8600 Luna continues in its well thought out feature set. Nokia's first use of a single micro-USB port not only allows for a streamlined design free of extraneous indentations, it allows owners to streamline common activities - like charging, audio and data connectivity - into a single connection. Quad-band GSM support also allows owners to easily stay connected while they are on the road, while the large, bright display is perfect for sharing images captured with the 2 megapixel camera.
The Nokia 8600 Luna is expected to be available during the 2nd quarter of 2007 at an estimated retail price of ?700 before taxes and subsidies.

Nice page - I love the music used for the video :)
The phone is nice as well, but to me, the 6500 Classic is somehow way cooler ;)

Wonder if the "glass" really is glass? Must have a pretty nice coating/treatment (I guess like real glass in the lenses of eyeglasses) to not break.
Higher price than I expected. Clearly positioned to make a niche market statement, and to be somewhat exclusive.
Overall, NICE. :)

nice one. better functionality than the 8800, even if slightly inferior materials are used.
What a beauty.I think they got the black glass idea from Vista? But what a phone.Wished it was 3mp and 2.4 inch screen. Then it would have been my next phone for sure.
Is it true that this wonderful phone has got 1GB internal memory without card-slot??? Or just 128MB as seen in some websites...????
Which one is TRUE????
It has got 128mb memory and no card slot. Now i have to add that tothe list to make it my next phone.
I really like it - I think I will compare it to my Sirocco Gold and if it really looks better then there's come a "successor".

It's much nicer looking than the 8800 but 128MB of memory is just feeble these days. It's rather over-shadowed by both of the 6500 phones announced today as well. For such an expensive phone you would of thought Nokia could shell out for more memory. It makes no sense that the 6500 classic appears to be a cheaper phone yet gets 1GB of memory, whats that all about?

Nokia are convinced it's just idiots who buy a 88xx series phone just to ponce around and show off. So they put the useful features in handsets that regular people will use. It's that simple.

I suppose in this case the more sensible person looking for a fashion phone would go for the 6500 classic then.

So is the 128MB overall memory final then? Was the 1GB thing a confusion with 6500C? This I can't really understand, and I'm not alone..
athos1111, http://europe.nokia.com/8600luna
Yeah, it's only 128MB - really silly imho considering the price and the fact that the 6500Classic has 1GB at less than half the price (and I don't believe that the high-end materials are so costly to explain the difference)...

It just beggers belief really, for that price the 8600 should have 2 or 4GB of internal memory, not 128MB.
For its price it should have much better specs. Rubbish imo

"estimated retail price of ?700 before taxes and subsidies"
This is strange. The price range clearly overlaps with the 8800. I was expecting that the 8600 would be a "entry level" 8xxx, a bit like the 8210 a couple of years ago.
This means that either the 8600 is the next top of the range or that a substantially expensive premium 8xxx phone is on the works. Could it be that Nokia is finally closing the gap between premium 8xxx and Vertu?
Symbianguru.com says it will have 1GB flash memory.

What did you expect from a 8xxx-series phone? Price is just an another way to differentiate products.
What did you expect from a 8xxx-series phone? Price is just an another way to differentiate products.
It would still differentiate from other products with a bigger memory pool, wouldn't it. The Price Is Justified just because Its a Index 8 phone, but What If you can afford it, but need a bit more memory? thats silly.
I think there are some people who do not get the point!
The 8600 Luna is a member of the 8xxxSeries which means Premium Level.
Its price is justified due to its materials which are used.
Its not comparable with a K800i cause it's a complete different base we're talking about though the specs are typical.

Super Chimp, I would agree with Seth: in the case of 8xxx series its a mistake to equate price with specs. It's more like Rolex: excellent build quality, materials, exclusivity, durability (?), timeless design (?), but specs are (almost) barebones.

Well then it's certainly not the phone for me. But you have to agree even something as basic as the battery life doesn't seem so good especially considering it's size & the fact it's only a GSM phone.
What makes me wonder is that Karim told us that this device won't be Luna - but he was wrong!
It's not that bad that he was wrong but should we lose our trust in our mods?
Seth, most of us mods don't know anything more than a normal user ;)

this isn't the surprising part, the big deal is that even badger agreed with him, and we all know how trusted his info are, but perhaps something happened inside nokia, some number changing, who knows!
That's what I thought too. Maybe they changed the numbers due to its appearance and the phone badger and Karim have seen is the real successor.
A nearly discription of what they've seen would be cool though.

I don't think those high-end ROLEX watches use materials worth the $20000+ price, nor are those Vertu phones. This is a 8xxx series phone, so it's no surprise that it has a premium price with not so wonderful multimedia features. After all it's aimed at a niche market where no one would use handphones as MP3 or PMP anyway :p
A nearly discription of what they've seen would be cool though.
the discription fits 6500classic exactly:
Karim was right the images are not of the 86.. This is a very attratctive phone, style icon - trend setter, very thin and metal cased

Last time I checked, premium meant high spec. This phone is nothing more that an over priced fashion phone.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/premium
I don't see high specs mentioned anywhere in the meaning of "premium". If anything, premium stuffs usually don't have high specs. You can find more functionality in a $5 no-brand digital watch than a $20000 premium ROLEX watch, and you can find cars with much higher specs than the top Rolls-Royce at 1/10 the price. And I don't see anything near high specs in those Vertu phones.
Thats cos you must get rubbish phones in USA or wherever you are.
Its 2007 and Nokia release a premium phone that has an internal memory of only 128 mb? Radio aside having A2DP must be like a slap in the face. Yeah im enjoying a whole album plus 1 video on my premium phone. If they really wanted to make to a premium phone how about adding a memory card slot or at least 3g.
This is probabaly the biggest rip of since the iphone in terms of technology and funtionality but at least with that you have the novelty of 8gb storage as well as wifi and a nice UI.

Last time I checked, ROLEX are made in Swiss, Vertu was selling hot in Asia, Rolls-Royce is a British company owned by a German company, so nope, the "expensive premium stuff with low specs" thing has absolutely nothing to do with phones in USA or wherever I am. Seems it's just cos you don't know about premium stuff.
If you think anyone who buy a 8xxx series phone will ever use it as a MP3 or PMP, you fail. If you want to regularly listen to music or watch video on your phone, Nokia 8xxx premium phones are not for you, nor are Vertu phones I guess. Like if you want to do anything more than look up the time from your watch, those $20000+ premium ROLEX watches are not for you.
Oh and Premium stuffs ARE big rip-offs, no question about that. Just that they are big rip-offs targeted at those extra-rich non-techie people who wants to get rip-offed, not normal people like us :D

If you look at that link I posted from esato from someone who actually owns a 8600 he confirms it only has 128mb memory plus one of the people on here who has also seen the phone has confirmed this fact. So it just shows T3 don't know what they are talking about!

Got the phone today and 1st thing u notice is the weight! (previous phone was samsung d900).
Looks wise it is spectacular - wouldn't say it was better than the 8800 sirocco but either would have don for me tho it is kinda cool how the keypad light pulses on and off thro the glass cover every 5 seconds.
Been a while since I used a Nokia - last one was 6230 LOL - so getting use to interface.
Can anyone tell me if there is a setting that makes the phone automatically lock and goes back to main screen (regardless of which section of the menu u r in) when u close the phone?
Thanks in advance.
First prototypes seemed to have 1GB of internal memory - so Nokia might have arranged to built in less memory than the protos had.
Fact is that it has 128MB of internal memory.
So it just shows T3 don't know what they are talking about!

I read that review using Bablefish to translate it but one part wasn't very clear, that was the part talking about using memory cards. But I thought the 8600 had no memory card slot?
The Luna has no memory card slot, so there is nothing mentioned about a SLOT anyway!
Like the motorola V8, the 8600 has the same single port for all - data transfer/sync, headphone and charging - all via the new microUSB connection. Is this cost saving, manufacturing simplification or what? At least I commend Nokia for puttng a MicroUSB-3.5mm adapter in the package, accdg to Eldar's review.
The Luna has no memory card slot, so there is nothing mentioned about a SLOT anyway!
I noticed that too. Or did I miss it?
No external memory with just 128mb internal means it can't be a multimedia phone. Just like the sirocco, this phone is meant to be just a stylish high priced phone. And suited to royalties who wouldn't be caught dead wearing earphones in public. :D
That MicroUSB to 3.5mm adapter is a waste then. People who bought this should sell the adapter to future Motorola V9 users who can benefit from it more.

Since the SE K700, i have been using only sony ericsson phones..
but my past was littered with Nokia's.. and one of them was the 8910..

:( That`s bad that there`s no docking station if it`s true . The DSs were onvenient and stylish , the DS was one of the familiar signs of the 89** & 88** phones with this design . ( the flip , the familiar small screen , etc ) That`s a pity that the charging system is changed so the DS now couldn`t charge but I think it could be left in the box as a nice accessoire . :)

I think the docking station is one argument for the lower price as well as the BT headset.
But like the SE T650i it is possible that a DS with a different stand could be developed (the stand features a docking part at the site) - even though this model won't get one.
What about some pics with live screen? That would be more interesting:jump:

any pics of the slide closed w/ the lights on?
the review mentioned that the keys glow under the slide, but no pics...
as good as this is, design wise i prefer the 6500. :-/
I had a play with one today. Beautiful phone, great build quality. But 128mb of memory? WTF Nokia?

echung84, thanks!
looks pretty nice.
Couldn't resist, one English version is coming to Germany. The device is coming around Mid July in Germany - that's too late IMO.
So, if everything's alright I get it next week. ;)

I got mine yesterday, keeping it clean of fingerprints is a challenge!
The only thing I'm not happy about it the call quality, I was expecting a clean, full sound, but it's a bit tinny and crackly. What are other people's like in calls?

Good luck with your new phone. Could I ask a few questions?
What is the music player & radio like quality wise?
Is the camera quality the same as the 6300?
How fast is the OS?
Is the build quality the same as the 8800 & is the keyboard easier to use?
Thanks.

Super Chimp, standard S40, ok, nothing special. Wish there was an auto search on the radio. The headphones supplied don't actually fit directly into the phone, you have to use a supplied "Luna Port" to 2.5mm jack adapter. They are ok, sound better than they look and have some bass.
Camera looks to be the same, not got a 6300 to hand to compare directly. Pretty basic, colours are a bit washed out.
OS is fast, no lag. Messages like "Radio turned on" seem to be on screen way to long though. Themes are cool, they all have a Flash screensaver built in that look very nice.
Personally I think the build is better than the 8800/S as they always felt a bit wobbly to me. The slide is better, I'm sure of that.
Keyboard is better, better d-pad and softkey placement, good key repsponse.

Thanks for that quick response. I will certainly have to consider one of these phones. As to the radio I am surprised to hear that it hasn't got any auto-search I would have least expected that even on a high end fashion handset like the 8600.
Be interesting to hear what the battery life is like.

It had it's first charge last night, moderate use so far, sent a few songs over Bluetooth, listened via wired and A2DP headsets for about 20min, sent 20 or so texts, 10min of calls. Various other fiddling and taking a few pics and videos, it's at the 2/3rds mark.
I do have the light effect set to 30min so that uses more power, and Bluetooth on all the time like I always do.
One more thing I don't like - when you reply to a text you start typin in the phone number field and not the message.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a bug that hopefully will be fixed with a firmware update.
Is the 128Mb memory that limiting in practice?

Depends how you use it, stuc ka few songs on and lost nearly 70MB now.
Not my type of phone, poor battery, terrible battery, poor camera, no 3G, small memory, stupid connector!
I do really like the style and build, but disappointed in the sound quality through speakers and earlpiece.
Don't think I'll be keeping it long.
Cannot agree,
my speakers sound very good. Can't tell about battery, but I think it'll have a normal 3-4 day capacity.
And the camera does not really interest me - I got a digi cam for that job!
As far as you don't need that high tech it is a great phone - like the 8800 was (is) before.
sidneylopsides, there is, just hold fordward and it will go to the next station.

Jo, oh yeah I was expecting it to be just holding down left or right on the d-pad.
Seth, Mine are loud, and have ok bass, but the treble is crackly and distorted, I tried a couple of others with the same music and they all sound the same. Loud but harsh, just not nice to listen to. There again, I am picky with sound.
Battery has been down to the 30% mark every day so far.
I like having a semi ok camera with me on my phone for when I don't have my camera :)
The thing is, even if you just think "It's just phone, nothing fancy" it's not actually that good at doing that part. The battery is poor and the sound is too. My M600i has much better call quality, and better battery life with more use! It checks my email every 30min, gets used as a music player via A2DP and browses these forums yet is usually 60% at the end of the day.

Sad to hear all that, from what you have written here & above it sounds like that what features it does have in it's modest features set are not the best quality.

Its damn annoying. I kinda wanted to want to keep this one, if you know what I mean. It does feel nice to have it, knowing that it's exclusive, and the build is great. I do hold it funny to not get fingerprints on it though :p
If it was a good phone I'd happily keep it just as that, and get a P1i or W960i as my everything phone, but as it is I'm not sure I'll keep it that long.

I am moving more towards possible getting the Samsung U700, especially now that some of the issues I had with the D900 such as the OS speed which apparently seems to have been improved & that you can now save directly save to the memory card. Plus the design of the phone is very good.
Though the 8600 has a good design it sounds like their are too many negatives to make it worth getting.
I am totally satisfied with quite everything.
The speakers are better than the ones from the Sirocco and better than lots of other phones on the market (IMHO).
And the device has all functions I need, fast SMS typing, a good battery capacity, a huge 16Mio color display and Serie40 - I don't really like the S60.
So for me it's kinda perfect, nice materials and it lies very good in the hand.
I am curious when the successor of the 8800 will appear.
Can you tell me Seath how much did you pay it in Hamburg?
Does the phone have twin speakers?
Cheers

I did not buy it in Hamburg, cause it isn't revealed yet in Germany.
I bought it via ebay.co.uk
Had cost me around 700? with shipping etc.

So you would advise giving the 8600 a miss then?

I'd avoid it, it's rubbish to be honest. Waste of money, poor functionality, heavy - it's like a relic from the past.

Can somebody with the 8600 please tell me if it has a cool analogue clock screensaver like previous 8xxx series phones. I know other phones with Series 40 3rd edition have an analogue clock screensaver but it's pretty lame. Thank you!
