Milan shoud win, if true talent prevails, but if Liverpool got to the final, with a not so strong team, everything can happen

This is Paolo Maldini's night, his last match... A living legend, nothing else matters but for his team to win tonight... :)

Pity they don't count double :) Fairly even game, pool were better 1st half, Milan came back 2nd, respect to Milan, probably deserved it on past performances.

Semi-final matches were more interesting than the final match.Anyway Liverpool didnt have much opportunities and the few it got it didnt use it well.

After reading some websites, I didn't realize he was re-considering, even though I knew his contract would end in 2008... I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play again.... We'll see... :)

Its ironic that we were good compared to Istanbul whilst Milan were not to good. Instead of attacking as they did against Utd they did what all Italian teams do best. Sit on a goal and defend. We slacked in the 2nd half but thats life.

Anyway positives.

1) We showed once and for all that we are a very good team indeed. I won't re-visit the rotation issue here but we showed that we are easily good enough to challenge for the league title if we actually pick somewhere near to our best team (which doesn't mean the same eleven players every week) in all of the games.

2) Rafa showed once again that he has no tactical equal when it comes to europe. He completely outsmarted their bloke (who's name escapes me surprise surprise) and had we showed just a little bit more composure during our dominance while it was 0-0, we would have brought big ears home again.

3) Daniel Agger. I thought/think that he is a quality young centre half and for me he showed it on the night. Controversial this but I thought he marginally outdefended Carra on the night and there will be many more big occasions in a red shirt for the Dane. That said and as an aside, I thought Nesta was brilliant on the night and kept them in it first half.

4) The players. Is there a safer pair of hands than Reina when his confidence is up? Carra is carra, Agger is on a steep upward curve, Masherano and Alonso are quality, Gerrard is Gerrard, pennant will get better and Dirk Kuyt is playing while safe in the knowledge that his old man will pass away any day now. Crouch although unlucky not to figure for longer showed he belongs in this company, and Zenden has played his last game in a red shirt. Things is looking up all round if you ask me.

Agree with your summary Bav, kewell needs showing the exit door, and crouch/ bellamy should be 1st on the team sheet imo.

probably because crouch and bellamy are home grown. benitez should get rid of all the cheap foreign imports and use british players instead. liverpool football club is a british team that deserves to have predominantly british players.
i can't remember any manager in liverpool focusing on the team instead of the player since the days of paisley, and thats where they are going wrong. thats what mostly gave paisley et al their success. instead of getting some foreigner who can't even speak english into the squad, get some decent home grown talent instead....but instead of asking "is he a good player?", ask "does/will he fit in well with the rest of the team?"

They didnt ruin anyone mate. We controlled the game but as they say that doesnt count. Im interested to see what that horse Valdano has to say now about Milans performance. Looks pretty much like **** hanging from a stick from where I was standing.

British doesnt automaticaly = better Brightspark. You either have the ability or not. Crouch isnt suited for all occasions. As much as I like him Craig Bellamy played out of his skin last season at Blackburn, its a shame that he hasnt managed the same form.

But you have a point to the extent that we need more homegrown players. Whens that UEFA ruling coming into play?

Anyway we still pocketed like 25mil just from getting to the final so thats a conselation bonus if you can call it that. Rafa has akready started building. I am critical of his choices from South America but if there is one thing he does do right its ship them out when there not doing it. Gonzales is all but gone to Betis and Zenden can move on aswell. I really hated that guy but I hated the fact that we had no one better fit.

Rafa has signed some Brazillian kid who is "ready to challanege for a 1st team place" according to Rafa so that should be interesting. - Something Levio

Mascherano has been a blessing in disguise. Apart from his little roulette (which by the way Alonso mimmicd later) Kaka was pretty much restricted by Javier. Not bad for a guy whos not played even 1/2 the season.

Its time to walk on hold our flags up high and learn from this experience. We have a lot of young players coming through and this experience will no doubt help to make them stronger. Many of the Milan players have been in a final or 2 where they picked up 2nd place so whos to say we cant come back stronger.

As luckly as that first goal was I still congratulate Milan for winning. They were decisive at the right time and made it count where as the story of our season was summed up in that game - Our lack of a top class striker.

I shed a tear on that night, not just for the team but because I wont see Robbie "God" Fowler play anymore in a red shirt. What a player hes been for us. Right from his first game against Fulham!!!! People talk about Wayne Rooney and Kaka as naturally talented. Those of you who saw Robbie play in his heyday will know that he was the original superstar teenager scoring 30 goals in each of his first 3 seasons in a row and then some. This one brings back memories

Ronaldinho eat your heart out son!

We need someone like him up front for us.

Etoo - too expensive but also too big headed. You need a deep squad which WILL need rotation. All that critisicm of Rafas rotation was stuffed right down the critics throat towards the end of this season. Man utd, Chelsea and Arsenal all sufered burn out in Europe whilst we marched on to Athens....

anyway back on to who can we sign up front....

Villa - Not sure about Spanish strikers to be honest. I think hes just a slightly faster version of what Morientes used to be, I dont think he has the pace for the premeirship. Only Alonso has managed to adapt properly and even then he has ben hot and cold this year despite adding some spectacular goals this season including a second goal hit from within his own half.

So who you ask we should get up front - BRING BACK THE BOY WONDER MICHAEL OWEN.

So thats my rant over....enjoy the celebrations Milan. By all rights your lucky you wernt banned from this in the first place after your shenanigans last year with the match fixing. (that was a cheap shot but i dont care lol)

i never said it did if you read the post. in fact, i wasn't saying anything about the talent of british or foreign players either way.

The best team won
You mean slimy team won, they should have won the Retired Team Accolade. Mind you they should have been disqualified right from the start, if they hadn't fixed some of the matches back home, who knows whether they would qualify for CL at first place.

Spot on Soji. If it wasnt for a technicalilty Milan would have been in Serie B this season and out of Europe. Having said that I think Man Utd would have beaten us, they have had the knack over us this season quite a bit.

Its a cruel game but thats in the past now. Come on Rafa get in the big guns!
