Nokia 5300 XpressMusic headlines a fresh lineup of new music handsets
Three new Nokia music handsets combine strong features, youthful style and attractive pricing
Espoo, Finland and New York, NY, USA - Amid the excitement of the hottest DJ's and live performances from chart-topping artists, Nokia today launched an exciting new range of music phones during an exclusive event at Nokia Theatre in New York's Times Square. Headlined by the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, which features a stylish slide design and holds up to 1,500 tracks, these music phones make it easier than ever to carry a single device by combining the best of mobile communication and mobile music. With today's announcement, Nokia broadens its portfolio of music-driven mobile products, giving consumers an unparalleled array of choice. The new products announced today will begin shipments in select markets within weeks.
"With today's launches we are reaching out to a broad range of comsumers who want both the features of a modern mobile phone and a quality music player in a single, stylish device," says Heikki Norta, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones. "The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic offers a comprehensive feature set, including support for up to 2 GB of memory and dedicated music keys at an accessible price. Never before has it been as easy or affordable for consumers to own a mobile phone that also offers a first-rate music experience that compares favorably to any stand-alone music player. With this product launch, we are emphasizing the benefits of the XpressMusic feature brand, which clearly labels those Nokia devices that guarantee an outstanding mobile music experience."
Nokia 5300 XpressMusic heads up the charts
The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic can hold over 100 albums worth of music (approximately 1500 tracks) on a 2GB microSD card. Thanks to dedicated music keys, consumers can easily control the playback of their music while simultaneously enjoying other functions such as texting, browsing or taking pictures. For an even better groove, consumers can plug in their favorite headphones or external speakers with a 3.5mm headset jack by simply connecting them to the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic using the inbox adapter. The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic swiftly transfers albums and music collections to a PC using a standard micro USB connector. When traveling, consumers can use the Nokia Wireless Audio Gateway AD-42W to stream their music collection and favorite playlists wirelessly to any stereo from their Nokia 5300 XpressMusic.
No one-hit wonder, the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic also comes with the latest messaging functions complemented by a 1.3 megapixel camera. Incoming calls can be enhanced with video ring tones on the high resolution display. The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is expected to retail for approximately 250 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.
In addition, Nokia today revealed two other music devices, the Nokia 5200 and the Nokia 3250 XpressMusic. Featuring a similar lifestyle-inspired slide design as the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, the Nokia 5200 offers an exciting combination of music and messaging functions and is an even more budget-friendly handset for young and sociable consumers. The Nokia 5200 is expected to retail for around 200 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.
Also unveiled today was the Nokia 3250 XpressMusic, which refreshes the popular Nokia 3250 with an updated look and feel. Still featuring the unique and well-received "twist" design, the Nokia 3250 XpressMusic has doubled the music capacity of the original, holding up to 1500 tracks (supports microSD cards up to 2GB) and is expected to retail for around 400 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

well it looks really good, infact for the price that you're about the pay it's a rather nice and very unique looking phone, anyhow at first sight it somehow looks like the old 6111 with the a face-lift, but thank god at least nokia decided to put a Qvga screen on it.
but here it comes the wickest part and perhaps the critical drawback of this phone, ...hence this phone's labeled as a Music Phone, then logically it should have enough capability of battery performance in order to play music for a decent matter of time, if the phone fails, then i believe you cannot call it a music-phone, infact all of a sudden those fancy looks and those extra-play/pause specified keys became just for decoration instead.
i mean just look at phone's battery specifications : it comes with a 760mAH battery and remember the phone has also a Qvga (power-hungry display), just by giving more clues, i remember 6111 couldnt work for more than 1.5days even with semi-medium usage and thats by considering the part the 6111 even didnt had a Qvga screen... now this time nokia comes up with a compact and awesome looking music-phone which might appeal many many people (infact i was stunned by looking at these photos) but in real life, i believe by relying to that 760mAH battery you wont get more than a day of charge with normal usage plus listening to a few mp3 tracks.
:(
Sigh. As usual, its always mucked up by battery life! <See N80>

Ok, im wondering what benefits are there to this "music" phone by nokia.
There has already been third party pop-port to 3.5mm converters available for ages. They even provide stereo sound as well.
On the 5300 as with other Nokias, the forward/rewind/play function can be accessed via navigation pad shortcuts.
So what segment of consumer does Nokia expect this phone to be for? Those who never try third party products or do research? Or does Nokia expect people to buy this jus cos of the new label of Express Music?
it'll b the cheaper segment. relatively cheap i mean. sound quality will b a wee bit better, if noticable. i quite liked its sound quality in fact, but it was good headphones i think. the phone is hopelessly ugly IMO. really cheap look, cheap screen (smaller than the standard S60 phone's... hence looks wierd). but then again, come to think of it, thats what its supposed to b: a cheap segment for mass market. "youth" would like the muzik feature is what they say!

you are calling the screen cheap, and its better than the one in the k750 you own :P resolution and size.
the size its 2' thats quite a lot u know :-/

Jo, let's not start going that way shall we?
am not aware of the specs. but i was going by the appearance of it. when i saw it. the pixels were "clearly" visible.
Display Type TFT, 256K colors
Size 240 x 320 pixels, 31 x 42 mm
WOW!!!! IS IT!!????
pardon me! but i guess was fast asleep when i had a look at it.
screen didnt seem like it was 2" as well..
sorry :( my bad!
P.S. i swear i felt the screen was cheap and pixellated when i saw it. specs dont tell...OBVIOUSLY! not justifying my post. i didnt observe well i guess! but the screen didnt seem like it had that good resolution....o well! my bad! sorry
a2k24, maybe you saw the 5200? It looks almost the same and only has a smaller, crappy 160x128 screen...that would explain your experience ;)
chlettn, nope. i remember seeing the music keys. and i listened to the music using a BT stereo headset... 5200 doesnt have A2DP right ?
a2k24, don't know about 5200's A2DP (or not)...it was just a guess as it would seem logical imho.
Nevermind ;)
yep. logical. i also checked 5200's specs after the "suspicion". it doesnt mention A2DP specifically, as it does with 5300 at gsmarena. plus, i distinctly remember the music keys. :)

The 5300 screen is the same as used on 6233. Quite nice screen IMO!!
I agree with a2k24.
I think the quality of the screen should be judged on the actualy thing seen in real life, not the specs on paper.
When the 6233 was initially released i was also disapointed with the display. With a 240x320 resolution on paper and the size of the display, i really expected the display to be alot sharper but instead pixels were clearly visible.

How can 6233's display be pixellated? My set has a wonderful screen-sharp, bright and individual pixels cannot be seen unless you look really really closely!

this is why nokia has yet to implement A2DP in their current line-up (if they ever will), so that they can market music-phones with A2DP enabled... nice one nokia...=)

is nokia 5300 is a java based phone, is it possable to install 3rd party software in it., plz reply as soon as possable......................................!
Yes u can install Only java based 3rd party application !
i read that this phone has S40 operating system, not S60, whats the difference between both of them?
There are 2 major differences...
1. The menu and other controls differ each other strongly.
2. S60 phones are smartphones [you can install symbian (*.sis) files in them], S40 phones are not able to use Symbian OS files, they can only use Java files.

Why do you want to change your N91 with a 5300? :O
Anyways, the sound quality of N91 is much much better than 5300 if you use the default earphones(since 5300's default earphones are dumb), but if you plug in a nice quality headphone in 5300, the audio quality of N91 is only slightly better than 5300.

Hi
There is no comparison no matter what headphones you try (in box, BOSE, sennehiser etc). The N91 blows the 5300 away, clear loud sound, no hiss etc. Its like comparing a ferrari to a vaxhaul.

Hi
My friend wants a music phone so I said either get a SE or a Nokia 5300
I like the SE W850/W810 but I used a W810 and it wasn't that loud
Can you use any headphones on the SE phones?
How is the Nokia - is it loud enough to hear outdoors?
Thank you

Hi, I just ordered this phone as an upgrade for my mum (I know it's aimed at younger people, but she likes simple phones that are small and she's on a low contract so it was always going to be a cheap model) and the main thing I want to know is, when you slide the phone shut, does it end the call, cancel the menu system, etc, like when you close a flip phone. I have the SE W850i and the slide is only active in answering a call - if you slide it shut, it doesn't end the call or anything. :insane:
Thanks :jump:

apart from the statement abt the screen id agree with a2k24.also considering this phone as a cheap option for young ppl id like to point out that now w810 also costs much less and is 40$ more expensive than this phone, which makes w810 overall a much better buy.

:jump: I am sure Nokia 5300 is Not BB5. Can Someone Unlock it? If yes than please get back to me with some contact info.. Thanks:rotate:
This can be unlocked but only by T-mobile at the mo. you have to call customer services and tell them you want an unlock code for it. It takes 28 days which is a pain. Also, T-mobile request that you have been a customer of theirs for a minimum of 3 months, so if you have just got the phone and not been with T-mobile before then you might have trouble. What I had to do is use my mates phone number as he had been on PAYG with T-mobile for 5 months. They seemed o.k with this but you will need the account password of the persons number you are using to do this. They will then send it in the post
ِDoes it has 2 mb for java ??? like 6233 ???

i have some questions about this phone
1. can i play video in a landscape mode in this phone?
2. can i install custom themes in it?
1. yes
2. yes
the phone have failed me to play QVGA 30fps, and the video gets out of sync :(
Jo, non-3G S40 handsets can't handle high video bitrates apparently, I guess that's also the reason why they can't record anything better than QCIF (at least until now...)
chlettn, sadly.... managed to get it to a good QCIF, the 5300 antialiasing abit so it doens't look bad like th w600. the thing i can manage to get h263+aac to sync... the audio gets ahead, my 5300 came with videos and they managed to do it, QCIF+AAC 44100hz and the video its always on sync, but it looks like SUPER can't do it.
EDIT: found a fix. for those that use SUPER.
output container : mp4
video codec: h236
audico coded: AAC
video scale size: 176x144
fps: 14.98 fps (it maybe can do more but i haven't try it yet
bitrate: 96kbps ( i think this was the trick or either change the container to i to mp4 instead of 3gp )
after that it worked like a charm :)
any video expert around that can find a better setting? :P
Hey everyone, i just made the switch from CDMA (Telus) to GSM (Rogers) and picked up the Nokia 5300, and LOVE it, but just got a few questions.
A) How do i change the banner?
B) Every couple calls i recieve, i get a text message from +8888, saying something like "WhoCalled; Number of Recieved Calls" etc. etc. It gets super annoying. I also recieve a text whenever i get a Voicemail. Very annoying!
C) The Rogers music player is terrible. I have 50+ songs (MP3) stored on my memory card, loaded from my PC, but none of them are found in my Music Player. And say i try to play them just from the Media Player on my phone, i can only listen one song at a time, not like if it were all in a big play list, playing each song consecutively.
THanks!
C.) try to store in music files and on the music player do this.
music player --> options ---> music library ---> update library
that worked, now i have them in my Music Player
but they wont play! i get an error message :(
je61, can you post what the message says?, and you have the music in "music files" in the microsd card? my came with 512mb one.
btw: i don't have a banner or get a message everytime someone calls etc etc its a branded/rogers thing. i guess.

I'm impressed by the photos but this is my problem,
since the 5300 1.3mp Camera it can capture videos of QCIF (176x144Pixels) & obviously play them but my qustion is what video resolution (& bit rate) it can really play if I'm copying them from the pc?
For example even though the SEs K750 or the w810i packs 220x176 on their screens they can ONLY play files of mere QCIF (176x144Pixels) (even in fullscreen mode). 1 row or column of pixels more & they just want play (atleast No video just the sound)
standardization of the 3gp format & all that is crap, cos It applies for mp4s aswell
The 5300 packs a 320x240 (qvga) display so is it really capable of that much in video playback (atleast at a lowerer bit rate)?

thats because the videos you play have bigger resolution and/or higher frame rate than what your phone can take.
murirtin, check nokia forum site, look for nokia s40 theme studio 2.2 :), its free but you have to register and ask for a serial number.

Hey guys and girls,
I am looking at the 5300 and the w810i. Seems everyone has a fav and many reviews are skewed and biased.
The cons on the 5300 are battery? voice software is useless? and one of my pet p'eves, no continual audible/vibe missed message alerts.
I really like this phone and am leaning way over that way but ....
One other thing I can't find out... can you use the external music buttons for video as well or do you have to dig way into the menu to function video?
thanks.
Rob
the dpad works like that, you don't have to dig anything, just dpad down and it i will change the video.. or left to rewind right to forward, * to fullscreen and # to mute sound.

i have owned two of these phones in the last few months and on both of them the screen has cracked without any heavy use or anything which should cause it to crack
