View Full Version : HTC OMNI - Universal Successor: HSPDA, VGA Screen, Samsung CPU, AKU3.0, Slimmer
After the slew of recent device announcements... HTC is now busily prepping the follow up to it's 'mini-laptop' form factor HTC Universal, better know as the SPV M5000, i-mate JASJAR, T-Mobile MDA Pro, O2 XDA Exec etc
The follow up to the Universal, codenamed the 'HTC Omni', is set to offer a similar design, VGA support once again, and boosted connectivity with HSDPA support.
The Intel processor is expected to make way for a Samsung unit (similar to that found in the HTC Hermes).
From a form factor perspective, the HTC Omni will be slightly thinner than the Universal. Additional hardware buttons make an appearance, however an external LCD - a popular user request on the Universal - is not included in current designs.
The device will ship late '06 / early '07 with at least Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3 as standard, which enables in the base OS a feature that is expected to be a unique selling point to the Omni... the facility to output to a projector!
As the device is in early stages, much of the specification is still fluid... but it's sure to be a winner amongst existing Universal owners, who are understandably reluctant to give up their VGA screens!

Why do HTC not improve their screens? All that power & they slap outdated screens on their devices!
Super Chimp, there is no support in Windows Mobile for superb screens!
MR
The screen on the Uni is VGA, to date it is still a trendsetter in WM devices with network connectivity. (some dells have VGA but not much else).
MR is right, WM 5 (PPC) only supports.. 240x240, 480x480, 240x320, 320x240, 640x480 & 480x640. More will come with Photon (the CE 6 based o/s)
Somebody mentioned more than 65K
Impossible since that is the maximum WM supports.

Any new info on the omni?
Im really looking forward to this device...
I wonder if HTC Omni is actually HTC Athena, i mean how HTC place these two almost similar devices (PPCphone and UMPCphone) in the market. Kinda bad market segmentation if you ask me when both also running Window Mobile (suppose to run XP on UMPC), a camera (3MP on Athena - weird with that size) and HSDPA phone (Aint Athena or any UMPC is too big for a phone?).
why wold you like more then 65k colors.
the human eye can only see around 300 colors. 65 000 is allready very much.
the difference comes with the number of pixels.
if you take the actual sizes of htc uni and divide them into 320x240 px, you will get a horrible screen but with 65k.
in the same manner, if u divide the screen into 1280x960, you will get a splendid screen with only 65k colors.
someone mentioned about a better processor.
well, a 400Mhz Samsung is actualy 20-30% better than a 520Mhz Intel XScale.
and with the new WM6 (Crossbow), evrything gets 50-60% faster.
bad point is that battery drains faster.
i am happy with my qtek 9000.
i hope that soon i will have enough money to uprrgrade it to WM6.
but when Omni will be lounched, i will sell my uni and buy the newer one.
price will be around 1400-1500 euro. yes...it's xpensive, and they can keep that price for a long time (as they did with uni) because there is no other competitor on the market.
i saw a picture of omni on the internet. but i can't find the site anymore. i will keep searching it and i will post the image.
the omni is very different from uni.
i think those pictures all over the net with a grey omni looking very much like uni, are nothing but fakes.
omni is black, and it has a more rectangular shape. no more sharp corners.
the external screen is small. it has only 2-3 lines o text.
just to show you the time and the callers id.
so it has probably 30x350 px.
anyway, could someone explain me what a VGA screen actualy means?
why doesn't WM support more than 640x480 ?
why a 800x480 is not VGA?

You can just wiki it and find out, like so:

i promiosed some pictures with the HTC Omni.
in an official report, htc anounced that they will not focus their atention on htc omni. they will focus on athena and some other devices (smartphones and PDAs).
but an unofficila report from an inside man, says that the htc omni is not a roumor. the device actually exists in a close circuit, inside the htc company.
this yaer htc will lounch 6 new devices: 4 PDAs and 2 Smartphones.
oane of the pdas has allready benn lounched: the htc athena or x7500.
www.seehtc.com
anyway, i-mate seems to boost up the sellings, as they will announce soon , all the devices they will lounch this year.
including i-mate 7150 (htc omni).
here is a pictures with the 5 devices announced.
the top right one is the htc omni:

the omni will have 3.8 inch screen and an aditional 2.2-inch OLED external

odd
Hewlit,
yeah very odd, HTC are no longer making device for i-mate, 02, HP etc. but branded their device with their own name HTC and Dopod (sister company)
Imate is sourcing other taiwanese manufacturers like Quanta, Compal, LiteON, Asus etc to make their PPC.
How can i-mate 7150 = htc omni ?
htc taiwan was a company based on research.
so they decided to found a different company responsable with the sales: qtek.
in the same time, the sold their "recipe" to: i-mate, dopod, o2, vodafone, orange. (no HP!)
later, they decided to close their own company, qtek, and "rebrand" htc so now they are able to produce and sell.
there was a problem with the low, as the HTC Tw, was a company licenced only to produce and not to sell. now that they have changed some things, they are able to sell.
that's way the closed qtek, because they were paying taxes with 2 companys, instead for just one company.
they are still selling their recipes to: i-mate, dopod, orange, vodafone.
do you think they are so stupid?
their incomes are: htc sales + recipes sales
they make a lot of money by selling their rights to others.
orange, vodafone, i-mate, dopod, o2 pay htc for evry single device that they manufacture.

that's the real htc omni.

This spec dosen't match the i-mate 7150 mentioned here (http://www.mobilmania.sk/Dalsierubriky/AR.asp?ARI=7704):
Which says VGA screen.
WM6 supports 800x480 screens, so it's possible, and I hope it's true, but it doesn't look good for now.
hey thanks for the link.
meny photos with the PDA.
but after seing all those photos, i have to say that the device is realy ugly!
realy ugly!
the keys look to big.
small letters on big keys....
the device looks to big too...and the joint of the screen looks ugly
nice oled external screen
but i am dissapointed with the designg.
the rest of the buttons, are realy thin and small. so is the joystick.

please someone tell me that's not the omni, that device looks ugly!
but like jasonpp said they screen res doesn't match the rumours for the omni screen which is said to be 4 inch widescreen wvga (800 * 480)
Its not Omni... The Omni looks like the Universal on a diet.
It is still on the roadmap and will appear (in shops) towards the end of the year.
are you sure?
i read in january that is not for sure if the omni will have a 800*480 screen because wm5/wm6 doesn't support this resolution. and this means that the htc has to develop a new software to integrate this screen with wm.
but we know that the omni has an externall screen, and this i-mate 7150 has one. also the screen dimentions of 2.2 inch, matches the rumours of the omni.
just look at it: it's just like the universal.
there is no other pda in the world with a "lap-top" form.
do you realy think that this i-mate 7150 is not a htc design?
we all know that when a phone is released, the producer allready builds an other one. so there is at least 18 months since htc started to build the omni.
i am pretty sure that this is an actualy htc omni.
Hewlit,
You cannot "just look at it" or listen to rumours (read: this is not Sony Ericsson forum)
HTC is no longer making device for IMATE.
Jasjam was the last, JAQ, JAQ3,JAQ4 to Ultimate were not designed by HTC
So Omni definitely not 7150.

you tell hin chokia!!!
the dude's messing with our minds and trying to use "logic" and "reason". instead of common sense and fact.
WM6 supports *lots of new screen resolutions...
The Toshiba G900 has a 400*800 screen - there will also be larger res comming later this year.
Larger resolution than 480x800? That sounds really nice. Is it going to be on devices with a size like HTC Advantage (Athena, X7500) or are we also going to see it on smaller devices with 3" screen or less?
Along with HSDPA (and hopefully more flat rate offerings from the operators) it will surely make internet browsing a lot better.
WM6 supports higher resolution but is the colour still limitied to 65k?
Dexeaur, according to badger it's not limited to 65k colours anymore :)
Hmm why only 3.8inch display? :-/
Looks like athena/advantage is going to be superior compared to this.

I don't think that I-Mate is the real HTC Omni... From everything I've read, HTC is not supplying phones to I-Mate anymore... But what is going on with the Omni? It was rumoured to be released by now and there has been no recent information. Has anyone heard anything???
