you are talking of a USB host. do you mean in order for me to have GPS on the phone, i will have to still buy a GPS reciever?
another question. this phone looks very similar to the tytn. what are th eexact differences between the two?
thanks.
do you mean in order for me to have GPS on the phone, i will have to still buy a GPS reciever? Yes, you have to buy an external GPS receiver
this phone looks very similar to the tytn. what are th eexact differences between the two?The TyTN has a slide-out keyboard and the Trinity hasn't - hence it's thinner.
MTM,
thanks for the reply. basically then there is no difference between the 2 except for the slidning keyboard..hmmm..is it worth it? why not include a freaking GPS in this one instead of the artimes which rather has a really weak configuration!
You got to ask HTC on that one ;)
MTM & Chokia,
do you guys advise people to go for the tytn?
do you foresee anything better coming out in the near future? i know stupid question as there are new things coming better coming out all the times..oh well..
Ok these are features uniquely owned by one and none by the other for comparison
TyTN
+QWERTY
+Flash
-CIF 20fps video
-microSD
Trinity
+USB Host
+VGA 20fps video
+miniSD
TBH, I like The Divine Trinity more and if i want keyboard i ll buy this casing

chokia,
ok..so the tytn has a flash + qwerty which is fine. micro sd from what i heard has a max. capacity of 2 gigs up until this point. regarding the video, what is the difference between CIF and VGA? which one is superior and how?
regarding this USB host, in which way it is better than the tytn mini usb host? doesnt the tytn have a mini usb host?
regarding the keyboard, why is the trinity casing your preference? doesnt the casing making it bulkier? is the casing incluided with the phone?
sorry for asking too many silly questions :D

Depends on your needs. If you need a 3G PDA and writes a lot of mails or similar (with two hands) I would go for the TyTN. No superior device seems to be released on this side of New Year.
If you haven't got that much need for a lot of text input the Trinity will probably be your best choice as it will probably be about 4 mm thinner and hence more pocketable (18 mm vs. 22 mm - though the weight should be almost the same with 170 g vs. 176 g), but of course you will have to wait 1-3 months before it's out.
Chokia has listed some 'minor' differences, which of course could be important to you.
Btw 2 GB is the biggest capacity of both microSD and miniSD, with the microSD available for around $100 and the miniSD for around $70 (if you buy SanDisk at least). I wouldn't care much about $30 when you're buying a device for $800+, but that's a personal decision. With a little luck though, 4 GB miniSD cards should be released before the end of this year.
You dont need QWERTY if you have these skill :)

MTM. i totally agree with you on your assessment.
the 30 usd will not make much difference but as per what you and chokia said, the functions i use the most should take the top priority when choosing one of those phones.
Chokia,
nice videos mate. they are very quick indeed.
any other differences worth noting between the 2 phones?
P.S. the casing looks good. has it been tested yet? it looks really nice. do you have to use the bluetooth to use it?
why the artemis doesnt have a wi-fi??
its also not a 3g phone, is it?

i dont know how hoochie mamas will help to sell a busness phone..:spy:
that website is like a rated r website.
anyway..whats the deal with HTC and imate now? will imate release those under its brand or their deal if off? will HTC release those phones in areas which were covered by imate?
those phones look nice but why couldnt those bastards add the GPS function to the trinity :insane:
http://www.mtekk.com.au/Portals/0/NTForums_Attach/1621325229629.png
If i remember right, the above photo was Trinity and i think it was HTC perfect idea of creating the perfect device. But then they turned greedy and split it into two. One with FM, GPS and Trackball Mouse (a.k.a artemis) and the other without but with 400mhz CPU, HSDPA, 3G etc which the former doesnt procure.
Thats HTC's definition of fairness (or rather greed, greedy bastard that is)
Btw, the hoochie mamas is fine :)
chokia,
so..maybe we can just ignore both until they come out with something which combines both..
by the way chokia,
is the phone i your signature the siemens-fujitsu loox 830? that phone looks really nice..any news on its release? it lacks HSDPA though i think..
Seriously, P3600 is really worth to consider. HTC now is so confident using Sharp's camera module in the device to deliver VGA 20fps video.
Things bother me about T830 are its small 2.4 240x240 65K screen, poor photo and video ( i wonder why its Sony Ericsson autofocus camera is not helping in this department).
1 ppcreviews (http://www.ppcreviews.net/content/view/749/7/)
2. mobinaute (http://www.mobinaute.com/mobinaute/article.php?id=20060725151000)
Perhaps the next ROM update will improve this. On other note, T830 has the best connectivity so far, fullsize SDIO, USB host, built in GPS, QWERTY and it was reported the final version also with HSDPA. But the screen ruins everything!
exactly mate. that was my only major oncern also, the screen!
why in hell have they designed such a small thing while incorporating a GPS in it? also, a windos based UI is utilized alot better with a bigger screen such as the HTC line..
this is ridiculous..once you think they have come out with some just perfect, you find out there is this one niggling thing..
is it possible for them to re design it with a bigger screen??
it looks nice though! but given the choice, i will go for the HTC only due to the screen size..
i like the presentation of the loox t830 though on their web site..
and why both reviews are in french??
then there is the benchmarking test which shows eten a clear winner, no??
it look snice but the damn phone screen is small..grrrr...
Why they didnt put gps to Tytn. :insane:
And usb-thing

so when will this device launched? hopefully it's equipped with phonepad coz i prefer phone pad rather than full qwerty keyboard. been saving money since last year, plan to get a P990i, tested the device, and it's full of crap!! all those beautiful reviews i've read in the forums about P990i are biased!! it can't even do web-browsing properly.. hopefully this htc is the right device for me.. hermes is good, but my brother has bought it, so i gotta buy another device so we can exchange latter. Any news regarding availability?

Release should be November or maybe even October if you're lucky.

yah, exactly.. it's an application by HTC, it's like on screen keyboard but it's not qwerty keyboard, it looks like phone's T9 keypad, they call it phone pad. you can find it in almost every htc device except the HTC Hermes. They say hermes already have a sliding qwerty keypad, but even the universal have the phonepad. i preffer this kind of input rather than real qwerty. besides, i try to avoid flip or slider form factor coz i put my gadgets in my pant's side pocket. that's why i preffer candybar form factor coz usually they're tougher, more solid. If it's out in october, 80-90% if the price is similar to Hermes. Btw, how much u think this will cost?
It would be logic of HTC to include it since it hasn't got any type of hardware keyboard, but if it isn't shipped with the phone pad I'm pretty sure you can install it yourself by finding a guide at XDA-developers or some place like that. You have to fiddle a little around with it yourself and I don't know if it's 100% legit, but I'm almost certain it's possible.
In Europe I will guess the same price or a little lower than the TyTN (I think they tend to make devices with slide-out keyboards a little more expensive), so around $8-900. Don't know how much the HTC devices are going for elsewhere.

bro, why when i go to xda-developers, it come out cannot find server? they change address?
Hmm, I don't know. I haven't visited that site for some time now. Maybe you can find it at MoDaCo instead?
Trinity has GPS Chip but it is software deactivated
http://www.autoroot.com/photos/albums/mondial2006/PICT6964.sized.jpg
According to author of this review Orange will offer GPS also in HTC Trinity (otherwise known not to have built-in GPS), not just in HTC Trinity:
Orange France is about to introduce two new "HTC" PDA Phones to be bundled with their new version of "off-board" navigation software called Orange Navigation 7. In mid November, Orange will sell the SPV M700 - that is based on the already known HTC Trinity - and the HTC Artemis (SPV name unkown).
Just a note about the HTC Trinity. It will be sold without GPS chipset activated (software de-activaton only) but Orange will include it in early 2007. So, HTC Trinity and HTC artemis are two GPS Windows Mobile PDA Phones...
Orange Incarnation of Trinity : SPV M700

So hopefully people in xda.developer will tweak the software and activate GPS. Sweet!
chokia,
basically then it will act as a GPS reciever! fantastic news..
perhaps cause some manufacturers are about to release or announce phones with gps built in?! no? we have the fuj-siemens T830 but no news of its release yet..seems like it will do a SE P990 of announing a year prior to its release..:-/
the screen size doe trin is good for the use of GPS..

Reports suggest HTC discovered an instability GSM and GPS modules working together, and deactivated the GPS module. But, I don't know how they would solve this hardware problem with a software update..
Anyway, I am also waiting for the T830 as the most converged device to date, but I can opt for the Trinity if it indeed has a real GPS chipset, as the folks at the Orange shop here in Holland said they may carry it..

hmmm..i really wonder what made HTC decide to include the gps, if they are going to do it, in the trinitiy..
could it be nokia's 95? if so, then they are a bunch of arseholes only deciding to include the gps which they could have done as easily earlier when they heard of the nokia n95..
as for T830, this looks like (pun intended) the P990..delay in the release by god knows how long from the time they announced it..by the time they release it, there will be 10 other phones with similar specs or better in the market while offering a decent sized screen for the viewing of maps and so on..
i think nokia have rattled a few manufacturers with their N95..the main thing which may prohibit many people from jumping ships to nokia is mainly the operating system and ofcourse the segment market.
the WM5 may be targeted more for business users but for people in the middle, they may get swayed by nokia's n95..ofcourse there are tons of other differences ..
im glad nokia made this move actually cause it will only force other manufacturers to stop messing around and include most technologies in single units..
n95 relase is also around the corner so lets see what the other manufacturers will do..
I believe initially there was only Trinity (look at the early rumour photo), the most complete pocket PC with GPS, FM radio and Trackball mouse. But then Miss Cher Wong (HTC Chairwoman) got greedy after she learned that cooking different style of food with the same ingredient can make more money especially if her brand can stand alone. So, in that process she dumped O2, Imate, HP, etc and buy off her sister company Dopod. She want all for herself.
So she quickly asked her engineering team to split Trinity into two. At that time trinity already in final stage of testing. GPS chip already included on the PCB and its running well with the rest of the functions.
But then again those engineers still have to split two products quickly, thus Artemis is born with GPS, FM and trackball mouse while in trinity these features are disabled even those chips are embedded on the PCB.
As for Nokia, they already CONNectING people and made tons of money with this style of business but at the end ruined they reputation when other manufacturer like Samsung/SE tried their best to give people all-in-one product. And people love SE and hate Nokia. So Nokia begin to realize this and now they give people super all-in-one device (N95) to gain back their reputation.
And thats what i believe :)

chokia..i absolutely agree with you on the afforementioned comments. i also believe nokia is trying to go in the direction how SE was able to attract customers and the unfortunate thing is SE is kinda going where nokia started which is putting one technology per set.
i figured nokia's game back prior ot th erelease of the SE P800. the P800 was my first SE phone and i never went to nokia although at one point i was one of the earliest in starting to use nokias in 96-97
thank you for the comparison as it is great mate. but i slightly disagree about your sttement that you should go for the most reds. i would say go for whicever red would suit you most in general..
the T830 gets good set of reds as well as the nokia btu one is WM5 and othe other one is symbian..also, there are no news of the T830..wouldnt it be nice if it had the HSDPA also?
its intro really rocks..:D
keep it coming mate..great comparison..
a question..which one would you go for?

Thanks for the comparison, mate..
I think I'll wait couple of weeks more to see if T830 hits the shops..
If not, I'll go for a subsidized Vario II and BT GPS receiver combination..
BTW, has anyone used GPS on a 240x240 screen? How bad is it (for T830)??

1. Dopod 838 pro no audio jack.. it only has miniUSB jack.. no 2.5/3.5 jack
2. P990i can't record QVGA-30fps, it records QVGA-15fps and QCIF-30fps. So much the "high quality video recording" from S//E webbie -.- (dissapointed fanboy here.. LoL.. j/k)
peace out..

Black goes better with this phone..
While product flyers on HTC website don't mention GPS,
this brochure version below says GPS will be available shortly..
http://www.europe.htc.com/z/pdf/products/HTC_PRODUCT_BROCHURE_V2_111006.pdf
Its a killer in white.. If this device really has GPS built in, its really amazing.. I wonder if the HTC branded device will activate the gps with a software upgrade, since its mentioned in their own brochure. I hope so!
Reply from HTC?s support:
"Dear Sir,
The GPS is not yet available on the P3600, I believe this will come through a software upgrade but we do not have yet a date for its release. However, the P3300 is available now and has an inbuilt GPS system.

That pretty much settles it I guess :)
So they disable the gps module via software, releases artemis and trinity at the same time, to boost artemis sales they dont give users access to gps until 2007, gay!
Yeah, Miss Cher Wang has becoming greedy and greedy when I thought that she only split Trinity to 2 but actually 3:-
1. Dopod D810 = Trinity with FM Radio and GPS disabled.
2. Dopod P800W = Trinity with HSDPA and 3G disabled.
3. Dopod M700 = Trinity with HSDPA, 3G and Wifi disabled but music edition
All for the sake of market segmentation when Trinity was supposed to be the most perfect ppc in 2006 and beyond.
Dopod is HTCs daugther company that market HTC products outside Europe, after they dumped 02, HP, TMobile, QTEKK and the rest.

i agree that the politc of htc is very strange.
does anyone have an idea what accessories will be included in the standard package of the trinity.
I mainly would like to know if a proper miniSD card will be included.
I found out the HTC will be availibe in Germany in the 47 week of the year.

http://mobile.orange.fr/images/ge/high/themege/chaines/sedeplacer/navigation_gps/m700/spv_m700_g.jpg
Automatic translation (Babel Fish) from French says:
the SPV M700 has an integrated GPS well... It was not activated by the manufacturer. Running first quarter 2007, the manufacturer will place at the disposal a software update which will reactivate the integrated GPS. While waiting, it is necessary to use an external antenna GPS.

I'd Much rather that HTC work on the fundamentals - like sound quality - before all this. I like the 3G, the GPS, etc but not if the thing sounds like a tin can, which is exactly what all my HTC-made windows mobile phones have soudned like. It is a phone first and foremost.
If they did that I would be willing to come back to windows mobile and put up with the other nonsense in the OS, but not until the sound remotely as clean in voice as the UIQ3 devices.
skagen,
Nobody will buy a Pocket PC because of they want to replace their Ipod. Same to no one will buy a laptop to replace their TV!
Btw, this is not sony ericsson thread, please channel your rant somewhere else. There are General and Flame categories that suitable for that kind of comment!
chokia, skagen is reffering to the quality of the voice calls not the audio output. I completly agree with him. I own many PPC & SP devices and the call quality is very poor.
Watch this space for the iPod replacment windows mobile devices, storage is cheap now and with WM's ability to sync with WMP on the PC is has a lot of power. Crossbow will see devices with large storage for music and video, the vista intragration is very powerful.
Glad to see someone agrees that HTC should address this about sound quality. It is something they know about too, but they seem to be more concerned about dazzling custmers with shiny pretty things.
skagen my comment to you is still valid regardless
Regardless of being um....off base and point-less? Oh right. No doubt.
Mobile is a forum for clear thinking people looking for unbiased analysis - not teenage fan-bois. You can head off to a forum titled ILoveNokia or ILoveSony for that sort of thing.
again, skagen my comment to you is still valid. there are 'ILoveNokia or ILoveSony forum for that sort of thing You can head off to' in this forum but not in this thread.
I hope you understand.

Hey, Chnokia give the kid a break. SE did mess up so badly with their 'new' symbian incarnation (P990i fiasco) - it is said that even some top SE employe use Wm5 devices. Let him enjoy the 'glory' making side comments. Now back on topic. I silently waited so long for trinity and now this :( Really disappointing. I might just aswell reconsider the N95 - screen input or not.
I silently waited so long for trinity and now this :( Really disappointing. What seems to be the problem? The lack of GPS before a later firmware update or do you think it has poor call quality?

I am no fan of any body. Call quality should't be a problem. Sound quality, while not the best, should be acceptable (what concerns me at least), but to 'disable' certain functions just for marketing strategy is a 'low blow' indeed. I fly as a hobby and want my GPS. I Intend uploading my position while in the air and let my friends/pilot buddies, follow the flight on google earth in realtime. (of course it will only work while the cell has a signal)
...to 'disable' certain functions just for marketing strategy is a 'low blow' indeed.I have heard, and tend to believe it is true, that they have had problems with the GPS interfering with the GSM module, hence they have disabled it. When they have fixed the problem (which obviously then must lie in the software) they will release a firmware update which will enable the GPS.
Should they have delayed the release of the phone to Q1 next year until the GPS was working? As long as they haven't advertised that it has GPS I don't see the problem in releasing it now.
I believe they have disabled FM Radio too

I see how having the same circuit board to run 3 different devices lowers the development costs while giving you 3 unique devices (Using a combination of the various features and disabling others).
However if you have the full circuit board on each PCB then your not saving any costs by doing this, merely limiting the features. Surely though HTC would sell more of this device if there was just one with all the features enabled? It would make it a much more attractive device. Sure if they want to do cut down disabled feature models for less then fine but do a slightly more expensive model with all the features turned on as well.
Even if we assume HTC has disabled some features to yield a better profit, you really can't blame them. It has never been their job to sell the ultimate device - it's their job to make money. If they can make devices with only some of the features enabled and still sell them, then you really should blame the competition for not being able to push HTC to their maximum potential :)
If you had 10 apples and could sell all 10 for $5 or each apple for $1 what would you do? :p
Precisely, Miss Cher Wang is getting greedy, i think she even invented the lame excuse that GPS and GSM interferring crap so her marketing strategies will not fail. If her engineers knew that that will happen in the first place they will not even included the chip in board. Common there are a lot of GSM pocket PC with built in GPS chip in the market infact most of them are made by HTC.
You can expect, her next excuse will be FM radio and WIFI interference, that's reason why she disabled it.

So lets find where is GPS chip, USB Host, FM radio shall we :P
An ATI chip... Is that some kind of graphic accelerator? Anyone care to look that up? :p
Rite, so who do we trust? How would we know for certain that HTC will activate the GPS?
well the customer service from HTC mentioned it in a email, that there will be a software upgrade sometime in 2007 that will activate the gps module, but they dont know (or are not allowed) to say excactly when.
Sooo, maybe we should only bother really looking at it when they release the CONFIRMED unlocked GPS version?
maybe YOU should only bother really looking at THIS THREAD when they release the CONFIRMED unlocked GPS version?

Orange SPV M700 is out, NO built in GPS. :(
Hi All,
Does any other PDA phone besides the D810 have HSDPA?
What brands is the D810 currently being sold under (or is this the wrong question)?
Has anyone used the D810? How does it sound on a phone call (clear?)?
Cheers
Orange SPV M700 is out, NO built in GPS. :(
I'm also interested in Trinity, because of it's compact size, 3G support, WiFi. But I find strange all forum discussions about it are dominated by the GPS "issue".
I use various GPS receivers since 2002 and they improved over time quite a lot, but they are still far from perfect especially around tall buildings or under thick folliage, thick clouds, etc. If a dedicated, SIRF III based, bluetooth GPS receiver with a large ceramic antenna cannot maintain view of a reasonable number of satelites (5-8 satelites) at all times, how do you expect a Qualcomm based GPS receiver with a miniaturized antenna, crammed deep inside the electronics of Trinity to perform well ? I do not think is a marketing strategy the fact the the GPS is currently disabled, it is just because is barelly usable due to interferences. I do not think either that a ROM upgrade can make it much better.
Is anyone here a big phone e-mailer or blogger who still chose the Trinity over Hermes?
Any regrets?

Hi,
Just wanted to point out that the GPS chipset is in there as showed in the pictures:
QUALCOMM, RFR6250, 1EERHCM, 0544G
ZIF, Dual Band WCDMA (UMTS) 1900 & 2100MHz, GPS RF Receiver. As specs from qualcom show it has WCDMA and GPS Rx VCOs integrated in the chip. Any of you out there who have designed RF circuits know what this means.
The MSM6250 is the RF front end and the MSM6275 is the baseband Proc. This last one does the baseband support for Bluetooth as well.
The RFR6220 is the baseband downconverter for 800/850Mhz band support.
Finally, the PM6650 is the power management IC for voltage regulation and batt charging control.
Also it has been talked about it having a GPS from gpsOne,when in fact this name is just the name Qualcomm has given to their integrated GPS solution. By integrating in the chipset, it eliminates the wait to first ?fix? on location, using the GSM network.
Just a note from my point of view, I don't think the fact that the GPS is not enabled was a marketing issue, rather a serious implementation problem, so I would not bet my money on having it working any time soon. In fact, there is a chance there will never be a solution for this. I got it with no expectations. Again, this is just my guess (hope I am wrong). Keep it up guys, Cheers

Read the whole thread above. Few replies from HTC that they will activate the GPS soon.
danosimo, it seems you know your hardware stuff. Welcome to the forum :)
Is anyone here a big phone e-mailer or blogger who still chose the Trinity over Hermes?
Any regrets?
I did. No regrets from me. Use Transcriber and Phone Pad and all is fast. Dude next to me at work has Hermes (I have Trinity) and it looks and feels much bigger (and heavy too).
Actually I use the Phone Pad (T9) for any messaging on the move and short SMS and text when not on the move - it is excellent. Transcriber for longer e-mails and texts when not in motion. I tweaked a couple of characters in the character learner setup screen and it is now very accurate.
The Hermes does not come with the Phone Pad software. The dude next to me with the Hermes has now installed the Phone Pad software since he likes mine so much. He now uses his keyboard less :D
For longer messages the Transcriber kills the keyboard (faster). For short messages the Phone Pad kills the keyboard (faster). I still think I can T9 a long message faster than the keyboard too so no worries if on bumpy transport. Convinced yet :)
Well someone had to answer it :jump:
VPA compact GPS - Vodafone branded Trinity with GPS!
Vodafone Germany's online shop preview unveiled that the German carrier will launch the HTC Trinity (also known as HTC P3600) as VPA compact GPS soon.
As you can see on the name affix "GPS", the Trinity definitely supports GPS which makes it the first 3G enabled Windows Mobile navigation device.
Other features of the HTC Trinity are Windows Mobile 5.0, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G UMTS/HSDPA as well as W-LAN and Bluetooth and a 2.0 megapixel camera.
http://www.theunwired.net/media/news/vodafone_vpa_compact_gps.jpg
Vodafone Germany neither announced a price nor an estimated release date yet but it shouldn't take too long anymore.
Please be aware, that Vodafone Germany will ship this device with German user interface, so it doesn't makes sense to order it if you don't speak German. Nevertheless, chances are good that the VPA compact GPS will be launched in other Vodafone countries as well.

HTC Trinity (SPV M700) unlocker available - SIM and ROM unlocker - indirect unlock of built-in GPS January 23, 2007 [Pocket PC phone]
Apparently HTC Trinity - the small Pocket PC phone with HSDPA and without QWERTY keyboard - has built-in GPS support...
This unlocker might be very interesting for you since it also removes the CID lock (CID = Country ID) which prevents you from flashing a ROM from a different operator. Since the only GPS enabled ROM is available for DOPOD devices only, you might want to use this unlocker to be able to change to the GPS firmware on your non DOPOD device and "unlock" the full power of HTC your Trinity.
Source: http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5982.html
You want GPS unlock now
http://www.imei-check.co.uk/m700unlock.php
This enables the GPS chip or just removes the cid?
alright now I get how it works, someone post your experiences with it here if you tried it!
Now I understand how it works. I have tested this solution and it works perfect. I had to pay and download the unlock and then I simply downloaded a firmware that enabled the GPS. I have been using it today and it works fine. I even get a signal indoors at home.
Which version of the trinity do you have, the genereic htc version? Where did you download the new firmware from? give us a guide :)
Could you post some pics when using the gps if its possible?
I have bought my HTC in Sweden in december. It's sold as HTC P3600. It's not bound to any service provider I can use any operators sim.
I paid the 20GBP for the IMEI unlock from:
http://www.imei-check.co.uk/m700unlock.php
I got a mail with unlock file and an unlock software tool.
After that I had to download a new firmware that supports the GPS chip. It's a dopod firmware and it felt a little scary to replace. But it worked out well. Before I had Windows Mobile 5 in Swedish and now it's in English, but that's not a problem. You get a different HTC startscreen followed by a dopod startscreen and then Windows Mobile 5 starts. I haven't found anything yet that haven't worked well. I get a error notification about that the operator not is supported in this region, but I just dismissed that and the phone works without any problem.
The firmware I found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291036
It's installed with help of a very simple to follow install wizard. You have to have a Active Sync connection when upgrading the firmware. It takes about 10 minutes.
After that I had to find a good GPS navigator software. I have been testing TomTom 6 and it works fine.
Here are some pictures.

very very nice to see its working! thanks for your post!
This guy Sand confirmed that the GPS also work indoor!
Decided to take the plunge with the beta GPS ROM. Worked out great!
GPS is now active on my D810 and it's definitely good enough for me. Some screenshots below taken off the phone whilst I was indoors

there is a way to unlock your gps device on your htc p3600 without the use of unlocking software, ive done it and it works.
this way is much simpler and can be reverted back to its original settings by yourself aswell.
all you need is the following software installed on your device:
PHM RegEdit
to download this software, just google it.
once installed start the program on the device and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings\
in this registry folder you should find a regisrty file called Hide with the data set to 1.
***registry settings are swithcable in binay e.g. '1' means 'ON' and '0' meand 'OFF'***
edit the registry to '0' (zero/naught)
every time you edit the registry, you need to soft reset the device.
once resetted you can now go to system settings an see the GPS settings icon.
*****DO THIS @ UR OWN RISK*****
i am not resposible if you do this edit and your device fails.
this works on my HTC P3600 and should on any other HTC P3600.

Can any HTC p3600 users confirm the above?
I have tried the above with the original HTC ROM on the P3600.
Yes, you unhide the GPS icon and it is visible in the Control panel but I can not get the built in GPS to work at all.
It would be good to have a workaround without flashing the ROM but this does not work. I would be very happy if someone told me I am wrong!
The solution posted by ziggy85 is not actually enabling the GPS chip. It's only making the GPS icon visible. He does not confirm that he's got the GPS functionallity, only that he gets the icon visible.
There are posts in this forum and others that this registry setting can be in hand once you actually got the GPS chip activated and supported by the ROM.
Sorry folks, there is no easy (free) workaround yet for enabling the GPS chip on your HTC P3600. I have no idea when or if HTC will release a firmware update. I have used the Dopod ROM (including paying for IMEI unlock) for several weeks now and I'm very pleased with the GPS functionallity on my HTC P3600. It rox as a phone/PDA/GPS. Best ever owned mobile!
What I have understood the complete ROM upgrade consist of different parts. Is it possible to e.g only extract the Radio ROM from a complete ROM, and only flash that part to get the GPS to work and keep the original language?
David1, I don't think so... Try and read xda-developers.com and see if you can find something about it :)
