Motorola halts V295 launch
Max Wang, Taipei; Chinmei Sung, DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 25 November 2003]
Motorola has decided to pull the plug on the December launch of the V295 camera phone, according to sources.
BenQ, the contract producer of the V295, declined to comment.
Sources said that the delayed launch of the V290, another BenQ-made Motorola phone, and the planned launches of several high-end Motorola camera phones around the same time were the main reasons behind the decision.
The V290, launched last month, was originally scheduled to launch in April. The V295 looks similar to the V290 but has a built-in camera.
Sources said that Motorola?s decision will definitely dent BenQ?s handset shipments, but the decision may do little to impact BenQ?s financial performance.
According to our earlier reports, company chairman and CEO K.Y. Lee said that revenue contribution from its largest handset client has declined to about 10%, helped by growing business from other sectors such as LCD monitors and optical storage devices.
BenQ is Taiwan?s largest handset maker. It shipped about 16 million handsets in 2002 and expects flat shipment growth this year. Motorola is BenQ?s largest handset OEM/ODM customer. BenQ will continue shipping the C200 and V290 for Motorola.
