Sharp announces SL-6000 series
The latest edition of Sharp's GNU/Linux-based handhelds sport VGA screens, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and IBM WebSphere support.
Many users have been disappointed by the lack of built-in wireless capabilities on Sharp's line of GNU/Linux-based Zaurus handhelds to date. Sharp's latest entrants, however, take GNU/Linux off the wire.
The SL-6000 series includes three different handhelds. The SL-6000N will not include any wireless support. The SL-6000L will offer 802.11b (Wi-Fi) support. The SL-6000W will offer both 802.11b and Bluetooth support.
On the inside, all three models closely resemble the Zaurus SL-5600. They run on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor, and are backed by 64 MB of flash ROM (for the OS and user-installed applications) and 64 MB of RAM (for active running programs). They include a pull-out thumbboard, SD/MMC slot, and Compact Flash slot, and are backed by a 1500 mAh rechargeable, replaceable Lithium Ion battery.
The new models, however, include a new, more streamlined case design and a VGA, 640 x 480 color display that supports on the fly rotation, first seen on the SL-C760. They also add the option for a clip-on "sleeve" with an additional Compact Flash slot and battery pack. Sharp will also sell a CDMA 1xRTT Compact Flash adapter, intended for use in the expansion sleeve to leave the CF slot in the device free.
As with earlier Zaurii, the SL-6000 series runs on Lineo Embedex, a GNU/Linux distribution built around Trolltech's Qtopia graphical environment. The new line also includes support for IBM's WebSphere Everywhere software stack, aimed at enterprise users who need tight security and remote access to corporate databases.
All three units will be phased in throughout the remainder of the near and into January in Japan. US availability is slated for first quarter of 2004. Price information is not yet available.

ok , but i prefer Dell & Hp ! AMERICAN producers!
Yes, because the Americans do such a great job. Hp and Dell are simple bricks. My Toshiba has an Ati Chip in it, which all other pda's drool over for. Japanese products are always miles ahead.

The Taiwanese manufacturer launches two new Mio Pocket PCs: one is the company's first with integrated GPS, the other targets a female audience.
http://www.infosync.no/news/2003/12/01/gfx/mitac_mio_168_01.jpg
MiTAC has added two new entries to its line-up of Pocket PCs, chalking up a first for the company as one of the models is the first from the Taiwanese manufacturer to offer integrated GPS - a feature commonly associated with high-end products. Dubbed the Mio 168, other specifications of the handheld however bear more of a similarity to mid-range handhelds, as is the case with the second handheld launched by the company, the Mio 336.
According to MiTAC, the Mio 168 is Taiwan's most compact portable GPS voice-enabled navigation system, and the world's first GPS device to run on Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. In addition to its internal GPS receiver, the Mio 168 utilizes a 300 MHz Intel PXA255 processor and weighs in at a mere 147 grams (measuring 1.63 x 11.21 x 6.96 cm). The unit also offers 64 MB of RAM and an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card expansion slot.
A 16-bit TFT LCD display with LED backlighting offers up to 65,536 colours, while a special hardware shortcut button will enable drivers to switch between GPS and Pocket PC user interfaces with one key press.
The Mio 168 also provides a Mio Map voice-enabled navigation map (bundled on a 32 MB MMC card, including a complete map of both Taiwan and the US); query services for 12 types of lifestyle information, including information on gas stations, parking lots, mass transit stations, restaurants, and scenic spots; queries to display current latitude and longitude, and voice alerts of speed camera locations. The Mio 168 also allows users to assign their own points of interest and new traffic camera locations, and even send this information to friends via e-mail to keep everyone abreast of the latest.
Meanwhile, the Mio 336 boasts a svelte 11.2 x 7 x 1.3 cm form factor and weighs 118 g, claimed by MiTAC to be the smallest full-color PDA currently available. Packed inside its blue-black color scheme is a 300 MHz Intel PXA255 XScale processor powering Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, joined by 64 MB of RAM and a 16-bit colour TFT display with LED backlighting. Also on the feature list: an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card expansion slot.
The Mio 168 is available now in Taiwan for a suggested retail price of 12,000 NT$, or approximately $350 USD, while the Mio 336 sells for 6,999 NT$ - approximately $200 USD.
A female audience, having second thoughts with your Hp already? :D
