I'm very interested in buying this phone. Is it available in Australia? I haven't been able to find it here...could it be marketed under a different name?thanks angela
It's i-mate sp5 & O2 XDA.
angela55, I've got one and have had it for three days now. I'm going to write a review on it though it will probably not get finished this weekend. If there's anything you need to know about, just ask... :)

Thanks odelsteken. I am particlularly interested in the Calendar/organiser function of the Qtek 8310. Basically because I have 3 different jobs I want to be able to tell at a glance (on a month view preferably) what job is on what day. At present I do this on my PDA by a small PIM program (Pocket Informant Pro) which lets me add a simple icon to the date. Would I be able to do something similar on the Qtek 8310, or even install my existing program on the Qtek 8310 (the program is on a Pocket PC Platform and synchs with Microsoft Outlook)? Or would a different phone be better for what I want? I appreciate your help!

Robot, thanks for the info about the Australian marketing of the Qtek 8310. The i-mate SP5 is available here; the 02 Xphone Orion (which is the equivalent under the O2 brand) does not seem to be available in Australia yet. I'm keen to hear what Odelsteken has to say in his review of the phone. angela
angela55, If the software you use works with windows mobile 5 for smartphones you'll be able to install it on Qtek 8310. If you really need that software and it's available for windows mobile 5 for pocket pc, I would recommend you to buy a Qtek 9100 instead. It will also give you a bigger display, touchscreen and a pull-out qwerty keyboard. Have a look at it.
odelsteken,
9100(k-jam) is big, heavy & expensive. I think he can find same software to work in 8310(sp5).
robot, the two devices run a different version of the WM5 o/s. Apps are different.
angela55, vodafone will be launching a 8310 variant in AUS soon... ;)

Badger, any idea how soon Vodaphone will be launching the Qtek 8310 version?
badger,
yes I know it, I told he can find this software for this version of WM.

Hi - does anyone with a Q-tec 8310 know how good it is at displaying excel docs. Keen to get the phone, but it's really important that it has this feature...

Hi Odelsteken - sorry to hassle you, but just found a great deal here for the 8310 and very keen to buy it today. don't worry about the photos, but can you just tell me if you think reading a small spreadsheet on the phone is practical, and not too hard to do...
ofmohamed, sounds great. It can be done, but practicle, not really. The display is fantastic and has a high resolution, but it's not big. I think reading a small cheat would be OK but I wouldn't want to edit one. If you will do this alot I would recommend you a Qtek 9100 instead...

odelsteken - thanks for this. Now got me thinking about PDAs instead, but still very tempted by the 8310! - I hate making these decisions!
Cheers again for your help :D
oh - I know this is not related to the thread, but if anyone knows of a decent smartphone that does run Excel well I'd really appreciate it
ofmohamed, I would either go for a Qtek 9100, or even better, wait until may and get a SonyEricsson M600. You might aslo want to have a look on some of HTCs more PDA-like devices, Qtek S200 for e.g.
odelsteken
you use it already for secon dmonth.
please share with your experience and feelings.
I am now using K750 and think of M600 as well, but it is a little bigger, I assume than SP5. I also do not neet the touchscreen.
I have the laptop PC so I do not really require the fully functional PPC.
SP5 would satisfy my requirements. Check emails sometimes, play some games time-to-time (how the things with games by the way? choice is good?)
View word/excel files (not really edit them)
anything else you can mentione about it after 1+ month of use.
Thanks
Pleased to hear
CEBEP, I'm very pleased with my qtek but I must say that I would like it to have a touchscreen. But if you don't need one, then you'll like this one. :)
The joystick is really good, the keypad is the same and it's quicker than most S60 phones that I've tried. Though some operations take a couple of clicks more than on a SE phone, but I can live with that. I especially like the alarm clock, when you wish to snooze you get a menu with different time lengths for the snooze, like 5, 15, 20, 30, 45 min. :) I just love that in the morning!
I haven't tried using it with word/excel files but it's the same software as with the rest of the HTC phones and according to reviews it's good for reading but the screen is to small for editing. Have a look at Eldards review, he has some screenshots from excel there.
The e-mail software is pretty good, though kind of slow from time to time, but I think that is mainly becuase it uses GRPS - 3G would have been good. The high resolution display makes it easy to read e-mail and the soft, but accurate buttons, makes it easy to reply to somewhat longer e-mails. The T9 included is one of the best I've worked with and seems to be like a combination of standard T9 and Motorolas iTap - it guesses the next word is is often right. :)
I haven't gotten WiFi to work since my home network is so encrypted and secure  I just haven't had the time to really try...
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! :)
odelsteken thanks for detailed reply. I will try finding the pics how Excel looks like on it's screen. In the MR review it says that skype was lounched (Windows PPC version) and could send a text messages but no voice. I wonder if you could sucseed any further.
How about the cell part? Reception, sound quality? General usability as the cell phone?
thanks!
In the MR review it says that skype was lounched (Windows PPC version) and could send a text messages but no voice.
Yeah, but that is only for PPC versions of wm5, for e.g. Qtek 9100 (htc wizard) and Qtek 9000 (htc jasjar). A wm5 mobile version is supposed to be on its way but I can't comment on it as I haven't tried it nor heard anything about it. Sorry!
How about the cell part?
The phone part is very good for a WM device. I've got an Ipaq with WM2003 aswell and they've improved the OS a lot since the 2003 version.
Reception, sound quality?
Reception is average, just like most other phones. I've got better reception with my SE v600 since it uses 3G coverage as well but it does without doubt equals my SE s700.
Sound quality is good, I was warned before I bought it that the sound quality was poor but I don't think so. It is not as loud as in regular phones, but the sidebuttons can easily adjust the loudness.
General usability as the cell phone?
I mainly use the phone for calls and text messages at the moment. Since I haven't bought a memory card I can't use it as a mp3player, but having had a look at windows media payer 10, which is included, I wish I had the money to get one. :) It looks very simple to use and has pretty good features. Besides, if you use windows media player on your computer it can easily autosync music as well via activesync.
Oh, activesync is another great thing with wm5 phones. It's really stable now and syncs perfect everytime. It's not as fast as with my Ipaq, but it does the job. :)
Hi
I recently bought the Qtek 8310 and I love the phone.
However, I cannot understand where some of my memory has gone to. For instance- I wanted to use an MP3 for a ringtone but the phone says that my memory is too low. When I looked under System Info - it says I only 2 .35 Mb left !
I understand that storage memory is different from my program memory - of which I have lots.
I also have a 1 Gig storage card in the phone.
Can anyone help ?
It is an excellent phone and I agree with many of the points brought up in the this thread.
Wifi works great too .
Many thanks.

Was thinking of buyng one but was wondering how the sound quality was. can you reply on how the mp3 playback is? From the phone speakers. thanks
I am using a D600 but not appy about the sound quality. Does anuone know if the sound quality of the 8310 is better or worst, softer or louder?

I haven't used it as an mp3player yet so I can't comment on that. Sound quality for calls is good, though sometimes I feel the volume is to low even when it's turned up to max.

hi - I've had the 8310 (well actually the Vodafone V1240, which is te same). For about 2 months I guess, and very happy with it. Teh Media player is good and the sound quality far better than I expected. It can get pretty slow sometimes, especially if you forget to cloe down applications, as they continue to run in teh background which i keep forgettng!
If anyone knows a place to get compatible java apps like games and oterh software, pls let me know as I'm having trouble findin relevent sites.
ofmohamed, I searched a lot for games and applications for wm5 devices but couldn't really find anything good. :(
Handango is very good http://www.handango.com
Also I hear that the AKU-2 update is going to be released for the v1240 this (next) week
