SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- As Apple Computer Inc. on Monday touted the sale of the 500 millionth song by its iTunes music store, reports emerged that the company could be close to adding video features to iTunes and its iPod music players.

Apple (AAPL: news, chart, profile) said the half-billionth iTunes purchase was made Sunday. To mark the occasion, Apple gave the purchaser 10 iPods, an iTunes gift card for 10,000 songs, and an all-expense-paid trip for four to see the band Coldplay in concert.

The growth of iTunes over its two-year history underscores Apple's dominance in the online music market. When Apple reported its third-quarter results July 13, the company cited data from Nielsen Soundscan that gave the company 80% of the market for legally downloaded songs.

Apple also said the latest reports from NPD Techworld gave its iPod 75% of the market for MP3 players, and the company posted iPod sales of $1.1 billion for its third quarter. With the iPod offering music and photo capabilities, speculation has grown that Apple could be on the verge on releasing a video-playing version of the iPod.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has held discussions with the major recording companies about selling music videos through the iTunes music store. Such a move would necessitate the release of a new iPod that plays videos.

Apple, which is famously tight-lipped about its product plans, recently streamlined its iPod line to include two versions of its traditional white model, as well as its iPod minis, iPod shuffles and U2 iPod.

Analysts have said that Apple's iPod probably has about six months of growth ahead of it before the MP3 market begins to show signs of maturity and reaches a plateau. The company, according to those analysts, will need a new hit product by early next year.

Some speculation has grown that Apple could release a video iPod in September. If it did, the move would follow a similar one in the fall of 2004, when Apple hosted Bono and the Edge of the rock band U2 at an event launching the U2 iPod and iPod Photo players.

Apple shares were up 25 cents to $41.71 in afternoon trading Monday.

i hope the size of the player will be the same as Ipod Photo, but with bigger screen, ipod design has plenty of wasted spaces, apple just made the screens very tiny in the ipod model, especially in their ipod mini.

So lets hope for VGA screen from them

nah, that would be so useless, and just another random upgrade! i LOVE ipod as much as the next lad, but thats too far!! why would you want 2 watch video on your mp3? unless they sold it aswell as the norm ipod!! it might be ok for watching films and stuff, but the memory would have to be uge, it would be expensive, and if you want 2 watch video and stuff, ust get a gizmondo or something similar!! IMO

why would you want 2 watch video on your mp3?

why do people buy portable DVD players?

unless they sold it aswell as the norm ipod!!

obviously. they didnt stop making the normal iPod when they made the iPod Photo.....
nor does any company discontinue one product, when they make a completely different one.

it might be ok for watching films and stuff, but the memory would have to be uge

ill have you know that 60GB will get you 100 hours of high quality VGA/360p programming....
and thats what the current biggest iPod photo has. and putting in a bigger screen would make it and eighth to a quarter of an inch thicker, at most.

it would be expensive

well, anything by apple is overpriced as it is, but yet they sell quite well....

and if you want 2 watch video and stuff, ust get a gizmondo or something similar!! IMO

whats a gizmondo?

IMO

of course, of course ;) :rotate:

:) i didnt see the top bit, yea exactly what portable dvds are for, not for your mp3 player, but now all the ipods are photo, except the mini!

klankymen, gizmondo, its like a handheld thing.
with video, games, music, camera, music and movie player, gps, gprs, messaging, bluetooth, it uses a sim card, and its about £200

http://www.gizmondo.com/unit/ take a look!

saying that though!! i would still buy it!! because i love ipods, i think tey are the best looking mp3s around!!! and every company has beating the ipod in their sights, including sony!! other companys may produce better products, but i stll prefer the ipoD!! :rotate:

liamss, see it like this:

iPod Movie = portable HDD player.

portable HDD player is to portable DVD player

as hard drive recorder is to DVD Player / DVD-Recorder

it offers more customization to what you watch.

also it offers much more storage per space (a single DVD takes up as much space as an iPod, and a 60gig can hold about 50 DVD's in qualities acceptable for a screen of that size.

also its smaller alltogether (id like to see you fit a DVD player into you pocket ;) )

---------------------------------------

hmmmm, id buy it over the gizmondo for looks and storage space alone.

its pretty much to the gizmondo what the current iPod is to a mp3 stick or a simple phone. (less functions, but big HDD and specialized to one thing)
