View Full Version : Which mp3 player is best?...
Hi i'm going to buy an mp3 player in the next day or so, but very confused about which one to go for!
My criteria is:
-> stylish
-> good battery life
-> at least 20gb
-> about £220 tops
-> good sound quality
I have narrowed it down to a short list of:
->the 20gb ipod photo (although using my friends 3rd generation 20gb at the moment and the battery life is shocking not to mention it keeps crashing!!)
-> sony hd3/5 (not sure what the differences are but i prefer the look of the hd3)
-> philips hdd120 (purely for looks alone)
-> toshiba gigabeat 20gb
I had my mind set up on the ipod today but the shop was closed by the time I managed to get there, this evening I have found out about the Toshiba, and really like the look of it but none of these seem to have the 'pezaz' of the ipod. However, why should I pay over the odds for style!?
Thank in advance guys :D
go for the 20gb ipod photo .. my brother got one , the only thing he dislike is the size .. little big and heavy when u put it in ur pocket :)
check iAudio x5 .. pretty cool http://eng.iaudio.com/ ' :D
just to throw another into the pot... the archos gmini 400!! :D
both the toshiba f20 and the gigabeat21 have brlliant styling. the ipod is for lemmings who want what everyone else already has. who want to be one of those silhoettes with the white earset and white ipod. here's pics and stuff i posted elswhere of the f20. http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213172&page=2&pp=15
i wouldnt get the NW-HD3, its got good battery, but its not very easy to use, and it takes ages to work it out and upload songs, so the HD5 uses the same software!
i would say get the ipod aswell, because its easy to use and its £209!
IMO its the best looking mp3!! the sound quality is also good, th battery isnt the worst!! and with the new 20gb now, with colour screen for the same price!

iRiver H340 (40 GB) would be a better option, but if you dont mind 20 GBs then check out the iRiver H10:

All of these players are very good, can't really go wrong with any of them.

i am curious about these mp3 players with 20gb or 40gb storage. Does anyone actually fill those up? my current mp3 player is 128 mb, i can just fit every track i am listening to at the moment on it. 40gb is the size of a computer hard drive, surely nobody has that much music :-/

Well its just not about quantity, its about quality too, these high end players sound great, provided one uses decent quality headphones/speakers. Most of my fav albums are encoded 256kbps upwards.
Lately I've started to go for lossless (FLAC or Monkey's audio) where each track averages to 30~40 MB, plus these huge players are great for the car too.
People who go for these players have collections that usually exceeds the 40 gig mark. As an example I've got 200 gigs plus music archived on CDs alone. I'm sure this figure is nothing compared to what people have in the real world.

I already had to remove music from my 20 GB music player since it's full. And I only have self ripped albums on it :(

jesus, how many tracks is 20gb?
you cant possibly listen to them all!
Not all in one day, no :p. I did listen to all of them at least once though.. most several times at least. Right now I have 3116 songs on it but there are still a few new albums lying around here which I need to rip :)

well i am impressed, if every track averaged at 4 minutes then you have 8.65 days of music there!
problem is we pay way too much in UK as compared to US and other asian countries like Singapore/ Japan/ Hong Kong for the players.
