View Full Version : Nokia Series 40 vs 60
What are the differences between these platforms?
I am considering purchasing a Nokia N70 (series 60) or Nokia 6280 (series 40). I know that you will be able to view MS Office-documents and pdf-files on N70, since it is a series 60-phone, is that possible on series 40-phones?
Anyone who has a link to pictures and info on the newest versions of series 40 & 60? Thanks in advance.
(I am replying using my p910, i'm really surprised by the keyboard, surprisingly easy to use!).
series60 has the edge due to bigger/sharper screens and extremely better software compatibility.
Mika, http://www.mobile-review.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=30590. Look at post #10. You'll find two screenshots of the newest S40.

Mika,
its not possible to view word, excel or pdf on a Series 40. I don't know any Java program which would make that possible. It would also be very difficult to read on a small S40 screen.
The difference between S40 and S60 is, that S60 allows to install new applications that run on Symbian or on Java. S40 can only install Java software. Symbian programs have more access to the system and run a lot faster than Java programs. Thats why you find a lot of games for Java but only very few user applications.
small S40 screen.
6280/6270 = 240x320 pixels :)
Thanks you all. The fact that it´s possible to view office-documents and pdf-files only on Series 60 makes me go for that platform, instead of Series 40. I want a phone that is more like a computer, so it´s possible to use more advanced programs on it. I like the looks of Series 40 otherwise.

WHy is it that nobody seems to acknowledge that the S40 is faaaaster as compared to the S60. The speed with which my 6270 opens can never be matched by the N70. Or does my N70 have a bug in it ? :-O
RaghuDevi, first, thank you for using the search option & digging up such an old thread which shows that you made an extensive look in in our forums before starting your contributions & questions, I wish every new member would be like that
To your comment, the s60 are getting really faster (not as fast as the s40). I felt a big difference moving from the N70 to the N73, so of course it will remein slower than most of the s40 devices, but still it is a fair price to pay for the options & functions you get ;)
Not all S40 phones are fast. My 5210 is sloow as a snail and I can't call 6230i really fast. Like faw said s60 phones are catching up in speed.

Thanks to faw for the nice compliments.Yes what you said is very true and I have gone through similiar feelings on other technical forums where someone posts without searching - ultimatley the whole forum ends up discussing why the wheel is round again & again!!
While on the topic what do fellow members have to say for the subject question ? A N80 in place of a 6270 ? What do you think will be the nearest answer ? And why ?
1. I am crazy to spend 200 USD more for the switch from S40 to S60 ..
2. Congrats - it is an excellent decision.
3. Better wait - Nokia might come up with a killer shortly calling it the "M" series.
And I am not a big user of the camera in phones - I always have my Olympus mu-410 for it. But I am a very big user of the media player to listen to songs on the go.
So apart from size, a new OS and latest technology how will the N80 compare on the media player and battery life ( with respect to 6270 ?) Is it worth the change ??
Thanks for all of your time. I just can't wait for the answer :jump:

media player ?
no difference IMO. videos may play a bit better on the N80 due to better resolution. and it being smartphone u may b able to watch video formats which may not b possible with 6270. if im not wrong.
regarding battery life ?
it'll b a downside, with N80.
consider N73 instead. if ur looking out for a smartphone.

RaghuDevi,
The closest answer, IMO would be 3. (you've heard of the oh-so-eagerly-awaited N95, right ?)
Also, I don't get the 'switch from s40 to s60' part. 6270 isn't a smartphone, let alone an s40.
If audio is your major concern, you should know that the battery of the N80 isn't really up to it. Btw, have you tried better headphones on your 6270 ? The stock ones on the 6280 player made it sound very mediocre, but a good pair of earphones really made a difference. (I am guessing the same player is in 6270 ?)
Armando, maybe because 5210 is Series 30 :)

Thanks for the quick responses.
I think the 6270 will remain with me for some more time. Afterall it has just been 48 days with me :D
I keep hearing about this "better" headphones for the 6270 - can you just post a link to one such or just give me the model of it so that I camn check with the local stores / or buy it off the net ?
Thanks
