Looking for a new pay monthly phone for my dad...which one looks better...he doesn't really care about the phone but I would still like the best one!
I think I, i mean, he will proberly go for Virgin Pay monthly at the carphone warehouse, seeing as they have some great deals at the moment.
Which one looks the best?
Im talking about the 18 month contracts which have dirt cheap line rental for the first 12 months and a free phone: URL=http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?ARTICLE=STATIC.VIRGINNETWORK.MAIN.PM]Click here[/URL]
Also, does virgin look like a good pay monthly network as I heard its quite new?
Do you think the phones would come locked or unlocked?

Thanks! :rotate:

hi mate, it's down to your dad on which phone he wants from the virgin network ... you can't change tariff down in the 18 months but it does get cheaper at 12 months if you dont upgrade.

the phones come sim free and not mucked about by the networks which is great.

if you get the carphonewarehouse insureance you can hand the phone back after 3-4 months and get a new one ... making it great for people who change phones often ...

the se k750i is coming to virgin network soon .. maybe get that one?

Ahh brilliant, Its good that they come sim free...I find it really annoying with t-zones or vodafone live menus and stuff like that where they stop you from changing the menu options so you always have to spend money on their stupid services which I don't use anyway!
Yeah, I'll leave it up to him to make the final choice, i just wanted him to have the best one!
Thanks again!

Forget virgin pay monthly - what about o2 online.
You can get a few phones for free for as little as £19 a month on a twelve month contract. My wifes E750 was on this deal, it came this week. She gets 50 minutes talk, 500 txts. But you can choose more minutes and less txts if you need.

I'm sooo p****sed off. I got a D500 for £25 a month on orange.
Not only is her E750 better in everyway (except the camera - which is still very good), but she's on a cheaper contract too. Damn!

yeah, but the virgin pay monthly line rental is FREE for 12months and then £30 for the last 6, so it works out as just £10 a month for 200 anyone any time mins and a free nokia 6230i! Or you can pay £3.99 a month and get a d500. Which one is better? I was leaning towards the d500 but then thought that the slider may not last 18 months and would be better of with the 6230i? Specification wise there about the same arn't they?

nope 6230i is a bit better as it has expandable memory( up to 2gb)

Which one is better?
Their +'s and -'s are more or less balanced out:
D500 has better camera, flash, better display and is more stylish.
6230i has a very average camera and smaller display but it does come with radio and expandable memory.

Cheers guys, I think it'll probably the nokia as there are less things to go wrong with it e.g. no slider which I could easily see breaking in 18 months.
Also, I had a samsung once before and the signal quality was rubbish...and don't say "90% network 10% phone" because I had other phones on exactly the same network (in fact the same sim) which have miles better coverage e.g. motorola v600, nokia 3310, etc.
Having said that tho the samsung is more stylish and the screen is lovely! I'm hoping my dad decides to keep his sony ericsson t630 and give me the new one! I do like the sound of a radio and I do miss having a nokia to keep me warm, wrapping me in cotton wool and keeping all customisation locked away from sight!
I think it will be the 6230i above the d500 inless anyone can perswade me otherwise!
Thanks again!

Maybe this will :):

According to the German magazine Connect, Samsung SGH-D500 is said to be the safest mobile phone. The magazine provides a statistic survey on damages among cell phones imported to Germany every year since 2001. This year the research by Connect has dealt 38 models by 9 vendors, such as Samsung Electronics, Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sharp, NEC, Sagem and T-Mobile.

It involved 12,000 readers, who bought new phones 2 years ago or later. The research revealed that the SGH-D500 doesn?t get broken that often as other models in the list. As you can see on the picture the average level of breakages makes up 16.3%, i.e. 16 of 100 handsets were taken to service centers to be repaired. The SGH-D500 scored just 3.9%. Now the users in Germany can see that the quality of Samsung products has surged over the recent years.

i wouldn't put too much trust in those kind of reports if i were you. you never know what happens behind closed doors ;). they often seem to use unreliable methods to obtain their figures.
also notice that it has samsung in the top right hand corner ;).
i also know why the v300/v600 show such staggeringly high return figures ........and its not because they are unreliable.

Cheers, You say that but at the moment I have a v600 and it is alrite except in crashes occasionally when I try to do certain tasks i.e. send messages to groups it crashes and then I have to resend the messages. But its not a major problem and I wouldn't call it unreliable!
Do you think that a d500's slider thing could easily last 18 months? Also, does anyone know anything about the signal strenght on a d500?

Depends on how u intend to use your phone. Obviously it's more prone to break if it falls on the floor vs a candybar phone but the durability under normal usage is good. (D410 slider had a lot of issues so they've fixed all the problems since then).

No problems with signal strength. Other D500 (current) users could verify that.

Yeah...I think I will go for the 6230i then...of course, thats if I can convince my father to let me have it! That shouldn't be too much of a problem tho...he already has 3 to occupy him! And i do like the sound of radio!

All done. Hopefully we'll order it tonight of cpw.com and then HOPEFULLY he will give it to me and keep the sim. We think we will go for the 6230i as it is cheeper! I really hope it will be unlocked! Do you guys think it will be?
One thing though, does anyone know anything about porting numbers because my dad wants to keep his orange number but with the new virgin contract.
Would we go down to the carphone warehouse shop once we have the new contact and then they'll sort it out or what? Is it free to change numbers. My dads on orange no line rental ever where he just is billed by the month for the mins / messages he uses, so hes not tied in a contract at the moment.
Thanks for all your help guys!

tim765,

my partner got a virgin pay monthly 2 weeks ago from CPW and needed to port her O2 PAYG number across. She was asked to contact Virgin directly with the PAC code for the port to be made.

Really, so was that easy to do and stuff? Did she wait until she had got the phone and had it set up and then having the number ported or what happened? Cheers for your help.

tim765, well, we haven't ported her number yet. But we picked up the new virgin phone from CPW and it comes with virgin sim and a new number(temp). I was asked to call virgin when we were ready with the PAC number(you will need to get it from your current network) to arrange the port. That's where we are i'm afriad.

Thanks dilukd,
Did your lady friend's phone come unlocked and unbranded? Also, what type was it e.g. samsung d500?
Thanks again everyone!

It was a 6230i and came unbranded. I think it's unlocked as well. Never bothered to check coz she is using the virgin sim anyway. But you can always get it unlocked easily couldn't you.

Oh by the way..if you are happy to buy online check these places out. I found that they had good deals...better than at a CPW store. they are part of the CPW group as far as i know.

I know the last two URLs are the same site. However they offer slightly different packages from time to time depending on what offers they have in the press.

good luck with the hunt !!
