View Full Version : Which phone has biggest color screen (non-touchscreen)?
My priority right now is a phone with the biggest or widest color screen size and with a front keypad (unless it's a flip-phone). Hopefully, it comes with the following :-
1) 256k colors
2) stereo sound or 3d speakers
3) bluetooth
4) expansion card slot (access ring tones, wallpaper, etc. from memory card)
5) ringtone - mp3, mid, wav, polyphonic
6) skin, screensaver and wallpaper customization
7) games, radio and downloadable applications eg. ebook
8) sms (similar to nokia method/dictionary)
9) alarm (when switched off phone like my old nokia 8210)
10) stylish design (not bulky. hopefully like nokia 6230 size or slightly bigger)
Not important
- camera
- edge
- gprs / wap
- handsfree
Current top 5 choices available in market are (in no particular order) :-
1) Motorola E1000 (but bulky, slightly smaller than Sony S700)
2) O2 Xphone II - similar screen size to e1000 but unsure of its functionality
3) Nokia 7610 - screen size slightly smaller than above.Reputable symbian OS
4) O2 XDA IIs - 3.5" 65k LCD, powerful specs. Expensive
5) Sony P910 - biggest screen, but with touchscreen. Yet has keypad. Biggest built of the lot. Has Symbian OS.
The best phone for your needs is probably the Moto A1000 or E1000.

Off the top of my head, in the currently available phones only the Motorola E1000, the Mitsubishi M900, or the Sharp 902 fit your *requirements*. Which btw, are totally insane...I have yet to come across someone with such high requirements from a phone...you want the size to be small, yet the biggest screen possible...crazy I tell ya :\
OR, you can wait for the new phones to be released and then get-
Panasonic VS7
Panasonic MX7
Panasonic SA7
Motorola E1120
Motorola E1060
As far as I know, on the Panasonic ones that I listed, neither do screens on phones get any bigger than that atm, nor do they get any more colors (16 million).
The Panasonic phones have 2.5 inch screens and yet they're miniscule... Sounds close enough to his requirements...
The A1000 doesn't have a front keypad/keyboard. Unless it has one of those slideout keypad like the Nokia 7650 or Xplore M28, has it?
Yes, you are right about the E1000. It has most of the features I mentioned except that it's on the bulky side (almost comes close to the Sony S700 bulkiness) and the alarm doesn't work when the phone is switched off. As for its screen size, some models having similar would be the O2 Xphone2 or Sagem MYX-8, I think?
Have updated my top 5 choice list at first post. Will keep updating till I decide.

Curious, which site do you check in regards to screen size? From pics, the M900 and 902 screens look small. One possible indication from most websites is the lcd resolution but that does not mean the screen size actually.
You may be right, I may have to wait for the next generation of phones in order to achieve a maximised screen size.
Wonder why screen size is not a key concern to the manufacturers.... IMO, I think it contributes greatly to features such as video playback, wallpaper/screensaver customization and overall wow factor. Just a guess, but I think Nokia for example probably wants to standardise the same screen size/resolution so users can share the software and themes/wallpapers throughout their models. U think?

makemedie, Moto 1120 wont be out until Q3-Q4, so it doesn't really help him.
pixel8, Howcome you dont have the s700 in your list?
The S700 has a big screen but it's too bulky and the keypad is considered inaccessible due to its clumsy swivelling. I rather go for those flip phone or slide out designs or even voice dial if given no choice.
Right now, I'm hoping for any brand to release a design similar to O2 Xda II mini but with a slide out keypad design. Mitsubishi M760 fits the bill but lacks bluetooth.... also unsure of its low 176 x 240 resolution.
Seems like this kind of slide-out design is most likely to achieve max screen size in the future, looking at how strangely limited the flip-out designs have been.

Just because a phone has a "Big Screen" doesnt mean it is all going to be used, i've got a D500 on O2 and was a little disappointed with the fact that much of it is taken up with stupid bars top and bottom. It all depends on who you get your phone from and if they have altered it i.e. static bars that are present, the only time i get a "Big Screen" (compared to other phones) is when im just about to take photo otherwise the actual working area is fairly small. So make sure you have a look at images of the screens as well as checking out the "Specification size"!
Are u referring to samsung D500? If so, think the size of the display is 30 x 39 mm, not very big to start off with. I think a minimum of 35x41 is what i'm looking for considering that's the biggest Nokia can offer so far and every mm counts.
You are right about testing out the gui first before deciding. Example is the palm OS models, which are not as flexible as the rest due to its screen-filled icons (wallpapers will be irrelevant). But I've encountered some whereby the top/bottom bars can be deactivated leaving a full blank screen .... perhaps your d500 can do that as well.

The O2 XDA II mini is an amazing phone. I've used it and it works great. Its one of the fastest phones out there in the market (processor wise, read JBenchMark results) and using it is just such a beautiful experience.
The reason I didnt suggest that was because you said you wanted a keypad, and it doesnt have one. However, off the phones in your list, I've used the E1000, 7610, P910 and the XDA Mini and to be honest E1000 beat the others functionality wise but the O2 just feels so good...espescially its fullscreen landscape video playback mode...its really cool.
If you dont mind not having a keypad, then check out the Motorola E680. Its not a phone, its a god :)
I'm sure the XDA is good. But I can't seem to get over the fact of having to touch a screen to dial and not being able to feel for the buttons (while driving or in the dark).
Kindly share with me, from your experience, is dialling via touchscreen as fast as using keypad? Is the GUI response quick enough? Is it clumsy for big fingers.... do i have to use the stylus or fingernails? Would listening to phone accidentally trigger something else at the touch screen from touching the face?
As for E680, I got brief feedback from a female colleague who has it for a while and she regrets it somehow... she's wondering why she didn't get a normal phone in the first place ... hehehe. Maybe it's the LINUX OS or maybe it's too much power for a female to play with... I dunno.
I noticed many females jumping into the pda wagon... in the stores and workplace. And to think why they do so, when they are generally not as techy or likely to use the full functionality.... figures.

perhaps because there are virtually no applications for linux phones at the moment. people don't buy it for the PDA features - those that do will be very disappointed. people buy it for its high powered performance. for that reason, its not that practical except as a multimedia device.

First off, while driving or in the dark, the keys DO have a backlight, and the screen DOES have a light so I dont think it would be hard to see the keys :)
The GUI response should be quick since the processor speed of the O2 XDA II is one of the best according to benchmarks. The dialling via touchscreen to be honest is faster than via keypad. I havent used a phone with a keypad for a while now and either way im extremely slow with the whole cell phone keypad thing. However, I've used PDA's for a long time and im used to using my finger instead of using the stylus for quick things. I dont exactly have *big* fingers :p but I dont think that'll affect much. You get used to touching the PDA effectively at the right places (damn that sounds dodgy).
During phone calls you cant trigger anything :\ Try taking a PDA and sticking it on your ear like you would for a phone and see if you pressed anything by mistake.
Do me a favour, ask your colleague why EXACTLY she didnt find the E680 good. I'm about to purchase the phone but I'd like to get some feedback from real people rather than just reviews.
BrightSpark, on a side note, congrats on hitting the big 5!
Dun worry too much about her regretful purchase. I'm sure the E680 is as good as wat reviews have praised.
My best guess would be that she jumped into the pda bandwagon without any proper consideration eg. size, actual usage, userfriendliness and fun factor. She could have best settled for the Motorola E368 instead.
On a sidenote, why are you changing from your O2 xda II mini? Isn't it fast and powerful enough? What's the E680 advantage?
On another sidenote, I had few minutes of fiddling with the SE P910I just now and I must say that I'm still not impressed with PDA/smartphones designs/functionality. IMO... firstly, they are not as user friendly.... it's like learning Windows OS or software all over again. Just trying to customize the wallpaper/desktop or sound setup was a chore. I had easier luck with the 'normal' phones within seconds. Secondly. sound quality was quite weak in a shopping environment. Lastly, was the text messaging.... even the new sales staff was struggling with it, trying to demo how to use QWERTY or the front keypad... constantly poking here and there with the stylus. At this point, I lost interest. Looks like SE P910I will be dropping out of my list soon.

cheers mate
What's the E680 advantage?
i bet i could answer that.........how about cost and value for money.
Not when he has already bought the o2 and is changing to e680, that's not cost effective.

To quote myself I've used it and it works great.
I haven't purchased it. I work at a cell phone store on Saturdays just because I love them so much. I've used it there.
Yet, I'm still considering the O2 Mini with the E680. I'm still not sure what to get either, even my last post about that in the forum didn't exactly get a valid response.
I reccommend you go and have a play with your friends E680. The P910 isnt even fast enough to give you the response that an O2 mini would (read JBenchMark score).
Just saw the O2 XDA IIs in the stores and I must say wow.... big screen with slide-out keyboard. Updated my list. It's the most expensive so far. Unable to demo due to vendor trying to preserve its usage timer.

Big difference here. You're talking about O2 XDA II and I'm talking about the O2 XDA II Mini. I've only used the latter one so dont take anything I said about the Mini and think its the same with the XDA. It might be, I dont know.
Go see an O2 XDA II Mini. I think its a lot cooler.
I've seen both already. I've tried out the mini before and had not much impression of it, except that it's a.... well a pda and at a moderate not too big a size..... and without a key feature i wanted, a keypad.
But yesterday when i saw the XDA IIs, firstly i was wowed by its black appearance and its slide-out keyboard..... and of course, a huge screen. But due to vendor's conservativeness, I didn't get to play with it or check out its capabilities. Though, it's the most expensive of any phones I've seen or know..... that's the biggest no no factor at the moment. However, if anyone tells me that the multimedia and customization capabilities are excellent, I may change my mind. Anyone?

They're excellent...in theory. Infact, 4th fastest according to JBenchMark (read here - http://www.jbenchmark.com/phonedetails.jsp?D=O2%20Xda%20II).
However, I'm surprised that comparing the size and the price you find the XDA II better than the Mini.
