Style? I thought it was about better sound quality.;)
And besides, if you're talking about style, the new iRiver H10 has it in abundance.

If you talk about style, I think the Ipod is lacking in it dramatically. I think the looks of the Ipod stink. I saw a Phillips 20gig player that was much more stylish then the Ipod, not that I would buy it, but it sure beats the Ipod in style. Now, this isnt saying that the Ipod isnt good, just overpriced compared to alot of the competition and only because of its name.

Maybe Apple's going for the whole "luxury" look...I mean, heck, look at the iMac G5...does ANYONE here think tis a tad bit overpriced? Hell yes.

For sound quality, Ipod is not so good. This has been tested through hardware detectors in many reviews.

Overpriced ? ABSOLUTELY. Stylish ? DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH.

If you want to see real style check out the Sony N Walkman NW-HD3 with a 20GB hard disk.

yeah, i don't understand why people are so into ipods. I mean, ipod is good looking, and quite a good choice to buy, but I don't think that Ipod is the absolute leader in any aspects.

I bought mine for two reasons:
1. the click-wheel... I just love it!!
2. the UI is very simple and easy to understand...

Although i own a 4th gen 20gig i still do not believe its the best mp3 on the market for that it would have to have better sound quality although can you really tell the differance, nothing a decent pair of headphones would sort out. The big stinker to me is the battery life for a luxery mp3 player for nearly £250 i feel apple could better 12 hours. All in all though i would have nothing else nearly got a zen touch but turned it down for my pod.

umpf! Plz don't start the Mac vs. Window$ talk in this threat :spy: I really intended to get people's opinions bout the ipod (which got cheaper by now) and not bout the G5 which beats every x86 system :rotate:

Ipod 4G 20GB vs Sony NW-HD3

Battery: 12hrs 30+hrs (mine flattened in about 33 when I tested it)

Size: Sony is smaller (shorter, and thinner) and lighter by around 30g

Compatibility: Hard one to judge, iTunes vs SonicStage, they both annoy the **** out of me because I use Windows Media Player.

iPod is FAR too common. More than half the people in my school have an iPod of some description.

So yes, iPods suck, and they both cost the same price, and before you ask I do have them both, but I only keep the iPod rather than selling it on eBay because an iPod is an iPod and it is so unbelievably annoying when people tell you that you can't say the Sony is better, but having both, I CAN!

I work at an electrical retailer, we sell a few of these HD based players, except the iRiver.
From testing them in the shop I bought an iPod mini.
I have tried the Zen Touch, Zen Micro, Philipps HDD070 and 120 (I think that's the one you said was stylish seedub) the Sony HD1 and 3 (the 1 is much nicer, the 3 has plastic panels!) and the iPods, the iPod just feels nicest to hold, is the easiest to use and just generally seems to be the best.
This is all IMO of course ;)

After testing someones ipod out as a christmas present, and playing with various' friends, I'd say they are indeed nice. However, I'm just sick to death of constant idiots going 'OMG IPODS ARE SO GOOD GET AN IPOD, I WOULD RATHER HAVE NOTHING THAN AN IPOD'.

wasn't claiming this! IMO there are three things that make the ipod great:
1. Usability/perfect integration with itunes
2. Simplicity/good for b00ns and geeks
3. Capacity/60 gig harddrive in ur pocket...

I'd get the U2 Ltd Ed. if it was cheaper! Black with a red clickwheel

Vein, hehe I know the feeling. Feeling pretty broke at the moment... :-/
The only downside is the back of it... it's still in shiny metal so finerprints stick like glue to it. I have to use a rubber cover and then the signatures on the back wont be as stylish :-/ Still haven't found a 100% transparent cover...

Box215,
what are you gonna go for?
4G or Photo?
I'm thinking about getting the 30GB Photo, just the right size for me...(for the price)...;)

On the other hand I'll guess I wait a month or two to see what Apple is coming up with (5G?) and iRiver as well... :)

andy.c
06-03-2005, 19:06
I would give it until the 5G is released... at that time they'll probably sell out the 4G ipod and you have the option to either buy the 4G cheaper or a 5G when it's new and hot! :D hehe

I like the iPod but the sound quality isn't all too impressive at all but there are a lot of MP3 players which are as bad as the iPod in this department.

For style, the iPod is not a ridiculous hype but for sound it fails.
I love the simple look of the iPod but I love the lovely quality which comes with Sony Walkmans.

I have both a 20g iPod and the 20g Sony NW HD3. The Sony has size advantage, looks advantage and battery advantage over the iPod. The sound quality of the Sony also just edges out the iPod. The iPod UI is a doddle to use and beats the Sony hands down. The Sony software is not intuitive but after some trial and error sessions it becomes easy to use as you learn what it can do. I have never ever used iTunes and have no intention of doing so. The one thing that really bugs me the most about the Sony is that it is simply not loud enough!! I can use euPOD to really jack up the volume levels on the iPod. Shame I can't find something to do a similar job on the Sony.

The other problem now with the iPod is that just about every other bloody commuter in London has one. I'm starting to get pissed off seeing it everywhere I go. I kind of feel that the Sony says I don't want to follow all the sheep, I want something individual and different.

As for PSP i have one and reckon the MP3 quality is good but not on a par with the NW HD3. It's not exactly that practical as a portable MP3 player is it.

i have never supported the ipod and bought a cowon iaudio m3. it has better sound (tested by myself and my ipod friend), battery life. the remote on the m3 is useful for when u are 2 lazy 2 get your main unit out, but the wires are sometimes annoying and the ui is not perfect. but all in all, an mp3 player must have good sound more than anything else, as its purpose is to play songs.

just to sort this one out, i heard from someware that you pay about £70 for the ipod brand name, is this true?

mikemclarenf1
24-05-2005, 11:00
Apple doesn't suck, but when you take one set of professional headphones to all of the mp3 players out there, the iPod is outgunned by even some of the cheapest players.

I would say this simply, that an iPod for me would be as useful as a portable hard drive. you'd have to kill me to get me to buy that for music listening. All of my friends who are iPod owners got addicted to the bass output of my MuVo NX (which was already fairly low) , and all of them offered to swap music players for the rest of the class. I just left the iPod on the table and did my work instead. Didn't want to get dissapointed.

The exterior is very stylish, but sorry, I listen to the player instead of looking at it. and at a near $300 price tag, no thanks. I'll grab another player for the music, and a external hard drive for the storage. God knows when I can finish listening to multi-gigabytes of music.

I'd rather keep my MP3 collection on my computer, since the iPod wont last too long on a single charge anyway.

why do some people worry so much about sound quality ?!! the ipod is a killer and has like the best sound there is as long as you have a good pair of headphones (eg bang and olufsen) not the crappy ones it comes with.

I love my iPod. Although i dont know if id have bought it for full price, i got a refurb from apple for £170 for a 3G version (when they were still £250). if i didnt get it i wouldnt have got another, i just done like the design of any others. Say what you will about iPods being common, but (like everything apple) it is VERY well designed, which is why they are so popular despite the high price.

Cant say ive notised any problem with the base on the iPod, sounds great with my Sony MDR-V700's.

i got my 40gb ipod in january and so far i have 1300 songs, and another 30gb to go... i use it in my car all the time, in the metro, basically every where i go... the orginal headphones are crap, but because they are white everybody knows you have an ipod and it is a bit of prestige thing going... anyways the headphones will die any day now, too much distortion and bass, i am buying new headphones from sony for 50 euros... how can you say the design is crap, it is a design which won many awards, including from an authority in the field of design, the wallpaper magazine... it is the only product i know of, which has a label that says produced in china, designed in california, they are proud for a reason.... the sony design is a typical presentation of sonys industrial design which they have been doing for the past 10 years visible in their tv's and remote controls... the only thing i hate about my ipod is the fact it does not have a remote with a dsiplay, as it kind of sucks to take it out every once in a while... but all in all it is a must have... :D

We sell the creative zen and Ipod at work.
A couple of colleagues bought the zens and I tried them, I thought the volume was too quiet and the build quality was crap.
It felt cheap and looks like someonse taken a sardine tin and fitted electronics inside it.
Another colleague bought an Ipod and up to that point, I hated everything apple have ever made.
Within 5 mins of playing with the Ipod I knew it was the one for me.
So I got a good deal at the time via ebuyer (£190 for a 4G 20GB ipod).

I don't care about 'looks' but I do care about build quality so that was one selling point for me.
I'm not bothered about how long the battery lasts as long as it's at least a couple of hours.

I don't care about poplularity of a product, (Ford have shifted shitloads of the Focus and even so, it's quite a good family car).
If a product is popular then surely the quality of the product is what sells it, not the brand.
Personally I find the supplied headphones ok, and with the treble and bass tweaked, it's fine for these old ears.
I mainly use it in the car and this is the reason I went for a HD based MP3 player.
I realling couldn't be bothered fitting an MP3 cd player to the car then having roughly 10 albums per CD when I could simply plug in an iPod and have a huge music collection ready to go.

What I do find strange is people bothering with MP3s encoded @ 128 or 192kbps.
They sound crap and I'd rather listen to a transistor radio with an AM band broadcast!
If you love music there is no reason to sacrafice the audio quality when it comes to MP3's.
VBR MP3's rule ok :)
