Conclusion
Offering a large display, powerful processor and a large amount of on-board memory, the iPAQ h5550 certainly stands out in a crowd by its specifications alone. Add biometric identification and a multitude of connectivity options and this high-end device should satisfy the needs of every potential handheld owner - but there are also drawbacks, such as poor battery life and its massive size. For those who can live with the latter two, the iPAQ h5550 comes highly recommended, despite a hefty price ta

HP iPAQ h2210/h2215

Measurements: 11.5 x 7.6 x 1.5 cm, 144 g
Processor: 400 MHz Intel PXA255 XScale
RAM: 56 MB
OS: Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC
Screen: Color, 16-bit transflective TFT

Availability
The HP iPAQ h2210/h2215 is available now for a suggested price of $399 USD.
Conclusion
Boasting snappy performance, Windows Mobile 2003 and a slew of connectivity options at a relatively low price, Hewlett-Packard has made a move that may damage sales of its iPAQ h5000 line: the h2210 is undoubtedly a better choice than the h5400 series - and perhaps even the h5500 series - for most users, unless biometrics and built-in 802.11b are key requirements. Further contributing to a very positive impression is a great display and the small size of the unit. In short, the iPAQ h2210 comes warmly recommended.

Being readied for availability in the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland, the Treo 600 is the most advanced wireless handheld to arrive yet based on the Palm OS operating system. The unit combines quad-band GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity with Palm OS 5.2 and an integrated digital camera with VGA (0,3 megapixel) resolution. A 16-bit TFT colour display offers a resolution of 160 x 160 pixels, and doubles as a viewfinder.

The trademark QWERTY thumbboard of Handspring's Treo series is also found on the 600, although this has been tweaked from earlier models and, according to Handspring, now offers improved ergonomics and performance. Also, an SDIO capable SD/MMC Card expansion slot is included, and a 144 MHz ARM processor along with 24 MB of user-available on-board memory powers the unit.

Orange will provide software with the Treo 600 which enables customers to access e-mail and the Internet straight out of the box, as well as download and view Word and Excel e-mail attachments. Additionally, the carrier is also including Orange Backup and Orange Update software, which respectively enables users to back up PIM information to a secure server on the Orange network and download and install device updates and 3rd party software.

Other features of the Treo 600 include a backlight for its thumbboard; speakerhone capability; vibrating alert; polyphonic ring tones and compatability with stero headsets. MMS support is also included, as is the proxy-based Blazer web browser supports several web standards such as HTML 4.0, XHTML Basic and Mobile Profile, WML 1.3, cHTML and JavaScript.

Measuring 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.9 inches (11.2 x 6.0 x 2.2 cm) and weighing in at 5.9 ounces (168 grams), the Treo 600 will be powered by a rechargeable, exchangeable Lithium Ion battery which according to Handspring will offer up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby time. To connect and synchronize to PCs, the Treo 600 comes bundled with a USB HotSync cable.

The Treo 600 will be available to Orange customers in the UK, France and Switzerland during October. Respectively, the recommended retail price of the Treo 600 is ?299.99 GBP, 399-459 EUR (dependant on plan) and 499-679 CHF (dependant on plan).

Compaq iPAQ h5600 going... gone

Causing a stir, Timothy D. Hall put what appears to be the never-released iPAQ h5600 wireless handheld up for sale on eBay. Days later, it's sold.

Just prior to the merger of heavyweights Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, much speculation arose concerning the further development and future of Compaq's popular iPAQ product line. Among other details, a picture leaked of what was assumed to be the full new line-up of iPAQ handhelds in the h5000 series - but the world never saw the introduction of more than one of the models pictured: the iPAQ h5450, featuring Bluetooth and WLAN connectivity all in one.

The two remaining models, of which the exact model names remain unknown, were never introduced, although conflicticing statements have been made by HP executives concerning the company's intent to introduce a wireless handheld based on Microsoft's Pocket PC platform. Alledgedly to feature built-in GSM or CDMA connectivity, the two remaining models were equipped with distinctly longer antennas, and one of them also featured the biometric identification capability of the long since introduced h5450 model.
However, even though the unannounced models never made it to shelves, an eBay auction now appears to prove that samples of them were indeed circulating. Put up for auction by Timothy Hall on August 30th, a "Compaq iPAQ h5600" sporting the above-mentioned features and running Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition was rapidly sold for $600 USD to an unknown buyer.

In an e-mail conversation with infoSync, Hall guaranteed the legitimacy of the device he was auctioning, and also produced high resolution versions of the same pictures as found on the eBay auction site to show that the unit in his posession utilized a modular system for either enabling GSM or CDMA connectivity in the handheld. Also, the pictures of the unit show it to posess the same SIM card slot as that which is present - yet goes unused - in other h5000 series models such as the h5450 and h5550.

According to the specifications presented by Hall, the "h5600" also posesses integrated Bluetooth connectivity and features a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor. Its specifications are otherwise very similar to the h5450 model, as it harbours 64 MB of RAM and an SDIO capable expansion slot, as well as a biometric identification system.

Review: HP iPAQ h1940/h1945
http://www.infosync.no/resources/overviews/gfx/handhelds/hp_ipaq_h1940_m00.jpg
The follow-up to HP's much-acclaimed iPAQ h1910 is here: the h1940 model adds Bluetooth, SDIO and Windows Mobile 2003 - but does it still cut the mustard?

Availability

The Hewlett-Packard iPAQ h1940 is now available in North America and most European countries for $299 USD.

Conclusion

As one of the smallest Pocket PCs on the market, the iPAQ h1940 stands out amongst its competitors due to the inclusion of Windows Mobile 2003, a sizeable amount of RAM and integrated Bluetooth support. Further contributing to an overall positive impression is an excellent - albeit flawed - display, as well as SDIO support. Provided you can live with a slightly crippled application line-up and ignore the yellow hue, this unit is a steal at $299 USD.

What's positive: Minute size; display brightness and clarity; Bluetooth; impressive battery life
What's negative: Yellow display hue; 2.5 mm audio jack

Dell Axim X5 Advanced

Availability
The Dell Axim X5 Advanced is available now for a suggested price of $299 USD.

Introduction
this Pocket PC newcomer packs plenty of horsepower and a brilliant screen.
Full review What's positive:
Powerful; plenty internal storage; brilliant screen; good expansion options
What's negative:
Somewhat bulky; poor D-pad

Conclusion
With the introduction of its Dell Axim line of Pocket PCs, Dell has managed to severely upset the competition: both of its handhelds provide features unparallelled at this price. The X5 Advanced is, despite its size, a very attractive handheld, sporting plenty of horsepower and internal storage. It also has a brilliant screen and connectivity options that easily lets users increase storage space or add a multitude of accessories. It's not the most feature-rich of Pocket PCs, but at such a low price it's a steal no matter how you look at it.
