View Full Version : Suggestion for 'Label' under username

BrightSpark
24-11-2004, 06:29
was pondering on the idea of having a system whereby a persons 'label' under their username is indicative of their post count. i've seen it on 1 or 2 other forums, and is basically a fun thing. so instead of having labels like "Moderator", "Member" or "Junior Member" etc like we do now, we could have names like "The Great Mobile God/Goddess In The Sky", "Ultra Noob"(for 1 to 9 posts), "Fastest Texter in the West", etc.
wondered what people thought about this idea. it would also be nice to have some input from the M-R team as to what they think about the idea :). not too sure if its a realistic possibility :eyes:.

as a suggestion, we could have the following:

for ordinary mortals such as me:

Number of Posts.............................Label
1-9.............................................."Ultra Noob"
10-99..........................................."Noob"
100-199........................................"Hey, nobody can call me a noob now!"
200-299........................................"Mobile Phone Connaisseur"
300-399........................................"I Text...Therefore I Am"
400-499........................................"I Married a Mobile Phone"
500-599........................................"Candybars are my Favourite......Food"
600-699........................................"Fastest Texter in the West"
700-799........................................"My mobile is so good, it cooks me breakfast in the morning"
800-899........................................"Clamshell Collector"
900-999........................................"Wannabe Moderator"
1000-1999....................................."I had to post more than 999 times to get this title"
2000-2999....................................."009: Licenced to Flame"
3000-3999....................................."The Biggest Mobile Cheese"
4000-4999....................................."Eldar's Apprentice"
5000-9999....................................."Superhuman...but Still Not as Powerful as a Moderator"
10000+........................................."The Great Mobile God/Goddess In The Sky"

for moderators:

1-999..........................................."Moderator"
1000-1999....................................."Super Moderator"
2000-2999....................................."Moderator Extraordinaire"
3000-3999....................................."Ultra Moderator"
4000-4999....................................."Superhuman Moderator"
5000-9999....................................."Almost Godlike Moderator"
10000+ ........................................"The Great Moderator In The Sky"

for administrators:

maybe the admin staff would prefer to keep their current names. not too sure.

these are just suggestions and could be subject to change. maybe other people can suggest names for each of the post counts :)

BrightSpark,

I have to agree with you!!
Mobile9 forum has it and it was real Cool!

BrightSpark
24-11-2004, 15:59
i have added some other labels:

My Middle Name is Nokia
Mobile Phone Connesseur
I Text...Therefore I Am
Candybars are my Favourite......Food
Clamshell Collector
Master of all that Rings
Superhuman...but Still Not as Powerful as a Moderator

i was thinking of having another quotations such as "To Text....or Not To Text. That is the Question", but i decided against it.

can anyone suggest any more?

Memzee

Mobile9 also used to have the idea of MB$ Cash, in which you got 2MB$ for each post, and as you got more and more Cash you could afford to 'buy' things, such as buying the option to change your username, or change your Username Label to a custom one.. etc.

Karim
24-11-2004, 22:09
Haha, it's good :) I like the idea
However if draak1 or bart receive "My middle name is Nokia" they will probably tear their eyes off :D

Memzee

I would happy if they increased the size of the avatar limit, to lets say 100x100--20k instead of the miserable limit we have now!! then i could do something REALY worth looking at!!

the only problem with the concept that Memzee originally suggested is that you'll get people who will just go on a posting spree just to get enough posts to change (for example) their avater. with my suggestion, having more posts doesn't bring any advantage - its just basically a 'fun' thing.

i'm not suggesting that the possibility quoted below would become the norm. i'm just suggesting that it will probably occur :).

if the labels were introduced, wouldnt people like me with 200+ post have a really rubbish label compared to people with 1000+, - like being seriously seen as inferior?

i am not dismissing this thing already - i like it,good idea, but this is just a little thought.

BrightSpark
03-12-2004, 23:14
like being seriously seen as inferior?
i had taken that into consideration, so i didn't want it to be too reflective. i only made it like that for >=10000posts, and <=100 posts. besides, many of those current labels may well be changed by the M-R team. its just a fun thing anyway....not to be taken too seriously :).

Mowbli you should be judged on the above!! There are complete dorks in M-R forum who have 2 to 4 thousand posts so just because someone has a high posting rate does NOT mean they have anything interesting to say or anything of value to contribute!! ;)

Hey - speaking of quality, cant there be some kind of rating system we can do for each members post?

like in some internet help files the ask if you found this thread useful - yes or no and we could do this for each members's post.
I think this system is already in place, for example When we PM, they ask if we want to ask for a confirmation of receipt of the msg or not and it could be something that works on the priciple of that. you have 5 unconfirmed msgs and 12 confirmed msgs. instead of confirm/unconfirm it could be like useful/ unhelpful.

sounds complicated, but i d image it can be done. :p justy another thought

Karim
04-12-2004, 22:59
Technically it could be done I believe, but there are about 932459325 posts on M-R, you can't rate them all and it would be extremely boring. Users can search for the thread they want, and reading a thread is not that hard or doesn't request that much work. That's why the thread is rated.

Memzee

yup, i still think thats a damn good and sensible idea. people have to learn to use some initiative and make use of the search button more often, instead of just posting and expecting to have information handed to them on a plate.

It would be a fantastic idea but I think it might be hard to implement + where do we put the final line?! Do we, 1000+ posters have to do a search before posting a new thread? I mean we've been around the block and know the rules... the question is where to put the limit, 30 posts? 50 posts? It's really hard to say cause some ppl use the search button before even making their first post, other can't seem to find it even after their 30th post...

I don´t think it can be implemented in a good way. It´s something that will ALWAYS plague forums IMO.
Actually what bothers/bugs me even more is the cryptic titles of many new topics, like "N6230" ... Yes, and then? What about it? Do i have to click once more to find out what it´s about? How hard is it to type: 6230 display problem! for instance? Then everybody knows immediately what it´s about.

now all the EXPERTS will have to prove their expertise!! ( sparky knows a thing or two) i will have to slow down my posting rate or I may get an EXPERT label, and get asked tough questions i dont have a clue about

EldarMurtazin, this is great, but wouldn't it be possible to put a new title for every 500 posts, like this:
1-499 = title 1
500-999 = title 2
1000-1499 = title 3
1500-1999 = title 4
etc etc

Also, I think we should make some better titles than the ones we've got right now. MR Friend etc. isn't the most exciting ones :D

OMG no! no! no! no!
If we can't edit them I don't want MR Fellow under my name!

I also think the 2,000 post gap between MR Fellow and Expert is exagerrated :D

Suppose it stands for "expert at posting", then it´s justifiable ;) :D

Strange, www.firstloox.com forums allows a user to imediately customise his or her title at first joint. But you have to pay some cash to buy a new avatar, but provided avs are cool enough! We should have an avatar list to choose from so that we don't need to make one and find that it doesn't work!
The resolution for an avatar is 50X50 here right? Now that's too small to create and impact:D We should have something like 100X100 at 180 flips per minute:up:

I like to suggest also the privilage for us members to change our nicknames when we feel bored with it :D Say for example this guy used to call himself a Nokia 6630 because it's the nobles now, but after a year, he may want to call himself a Nokia 6650 which may be the king at that time. Then we may have a list to say-Nokia 6630 is now known as Nokia 6650! :D
And what about placing this cute little avatar for the infamous :D

Please don't kill me for saying all this lol, they're only just my little contributed suggestions :D bye!

the privilage for us members to change our nicknames when we feel bored with it
no way... that would be major confusing to all of us! At least to us mods who're trying to clean this place out from certain jokes. Wouldn't be that easy if the person would to change his nick after every single post...

I agree with Odelsteken. Reaching a certain level after 500 posts would be fair.

I also think not only posts should be counted for this matter. Points could be added by Moderators or the Administrator when users diserve it. If one writes nothing but crap on each reply one will get to 1000 posts really easy! On the other side, if one brings interesting information to threads one should be appreciated for that. I don't know exactly if this can be done "manually" because posts are counted automaticlly by the software. Anyway, here's my opinion.

Hi, I want a custom label, I thought this could be done since 1,500 posts :)
Can we still do it?
Retired Moderator is starting to get a bit old now since I haven't been a moderator since February or March :)
If we can't change it to anything custom, just get me back to Member ;)

We'll have to wait for either Eldar or SFY to do that.

Atleast give us some freedom to change the titles below our usernames and let us have the privilage to have signitures.

People can have nice looking sigs on other forums and I also have N90 sigs on lowyat forums.

Signatures take up bandwidth and serve no real functional purpose.

Exciting700
06-09-2005, 19:17
Neither does avatars.

A certain forum I'm a member in with thousands of members a day (80% of the users with sigs) still functions much more swiftly than mobile-review forums.

Just providing an example that sigs doesn't seriously hinders bandwidth and a limit can always be set by the admins.

Memzee

Neither does avatars.
Which is why they're restricted to 50*50.

Sigs full of pictures etc. don't just take up bandwidth without serving a real purpose, they also make threads look much untidier, and increase the amount of scrolling a person has to do when reading through the thread.

It should be possible (For the admin) to set the default number (Of posts in one page) to be lesser so that less scrollings will be needed.

Karim

I suggest the following:
1- Signatures with only text allowed
2- Custom titles under the username OR at least put them something better than MR Friend and MR Fellow, that's just as lame as it gets :D How 'bout "I got a phone tatooed on my buttcheek" or something!

xor

i totally agree with Karim, about text only signatures.
i can't quite match ur post level or titles lol

but a text only signature can be a good compromis omo
ppl like putting quote's , additional information ... :) guaranteedto be a succes

i hate signatures, people have really useless ones, and when its text i always get confused with which bit they have posted and their sig, so i get bored and dont read any of it! thats why i dont really use other forums!!!!

Karim
19-09-2005, 18:45
Yes, but when they are limited to text and just one or two sentences, who cares? :)
