The French minister of education has just launched a special initiative which aims at doubling the number of students owning a laptop. All students from university or technological school (something like 2.2 Million students!) can make their demand by the official Internet site of the Ministry of Education (www.delegation.internet.gouv.fr) and will receive their new laptop in the following days :)
Nine manufacturers (Apple, Asus, Dell, FGI, HP, IBM, Nec, Sony and Toshiba) offer around 30 models and 6 major French banks are ready to offer loans from 1000 to 3000 Euro at privileged rates. So, a students will have to pay only 1 Euro a day during 36 months for a loan of 1000 Euro, and 3 Euro for a loan of 3000 Euro.
The ministry hopes that with this initiative the number of French students owning a laptop will grow from 8% to 16% in one year. Moreover, 80% of French universities plan to install WiFi and 2300 hot spot are expected for the six months to come. The budget for this operation is estimated to 4,5 Million Euro by the ministry, who also said that the global investments in favour of installing digital technology in the universities will be around 209 Million Euro for the period from 2003 to 2007.
