MHB - PST

PRODUCT SUPPORT TOOL(PST)

OVERVIEW

PST is used for the following:
  • Flash/flex your phone.
  • Enable the Java App Loader (this can also be achieved by a simple seem edit) that is necessary to install java games, amongst other things.
  • Changing some basic phone settings.

INSTALLATION

Stage 1: - Unzipping the software
1) Unzip all the software. Note: Do not plug your USB cable into your phone until Step 9.

Stage 2: - Installing the software
2) Double click on the PST_6.7_GENERAL program to run it.

3) Go through all the usual install questions etc(eg licence agreements etc) until you come to InstallShield Wizard Complete. It will ask you if you want to restart your computer - click on No, i will restart it later, then click Finish button.

4) Windows will then automatically bring up a Welcome to the Windows XP Q814560 Setup Wizard dialogue. Allow these to be installed.

5) The hotfix installation should complete with a Completing the Windows Q814560 setup Wizard dialogue box. Don't allow the PC to restart, so do tick Do not restart now.
I then got a Q814560 Setup Error dialogue. This dialogue just says:

Setup has detected that the version of the Service Pack installed on your system is lower than what is necessary to apply this hotfix.
At minimum, you must have Service Pack 1 installed.

Click the OK button. This doesn't have any bearing on the installation whatsoever....or at least, not that i've ever noticed . I have Windows XP with no service pack installed.

Stage 3: - Adding the patch
6) Copy all the files from the PST_6.7_Patch directory, and paste them into the main PST directory where it installs (ie C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST). A Confirm File Replace dialogue should appear - click Yes to All.

Stage 4: - Adding P2kMan and some required .dll files.

7) Take the p2kman_pst directory, and place it in the PST directory. These include the old version of P2kman(build 26.02.2004) program together with some .dll files.

8) Restart your computer now.

Stage 6: - Installing the USB driver.
If the USB driver has already been installed with MPT, go to Step 15.
If the USB driver and the P2k devices have already been installed with the non-PST version of P2kMan, go to Step 20
.

9) When your PC has restarted, plug your USB into the phone.

10) A Found New Hardware Wizard should soon appear, and will install the following device:

Motorola USB Modem

Select Install from a list or specified location.

11) Click Next button.

12) Then select Search for the best driver in this location.

13) Tick Include this location in the search only.

14) Click on the Browse button to specify the directory where Windows is to locate the driver - make sure that you point it to the directory: C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST.

Stage 6: - Installing the P2k devices.
15) The next thing we need to do is to install the following devices (note that they all utilise the same driver: p2k.sys):

Communications Class - Communications Interface
Accessories Interface
Data Logging MCU Interface
Test Command Interface

Note: For some reason, Communications Class - Communications Interface doesn't always install with PST. Occassionally in some previous 'test installs' that i've done, all the devices except Communications Class - Communications Interface have installed, yet PST seemed to work perfectly. So if Windows doesn't request that you install it with the Found New Hardware Wizard, don't worry about it.
Also note that this device does not appear in Device Manager when PST is open........which seems to suggest that it isn't required by PST afterall. However, install it if Windows requests you to with the Found New Hardware Wizard.

To install the P2k devices, we need to break the connection and 'encourage' Windows to install them. This is done by Unplugging the USB cable from your phone, plugging it back in(you will see your LCD light up now because a USB driver has been installed), and double-clicking on the PST Phone Programmer icon on your desktop to run PST. This should 'encourage' the Found New Hardware Wizard to appear. Keep the same option as with installing the USB driver. They are included here for the sake of entirety. Select Install from a list or specified location.

16) Click Next button.

17) Then select Search for the best driver in this location.

18) Tick Include this location in the search only.

19) Click on the Browse button to specify the directory where Windows is to locate the drivers - make sure that you point it to the directory: C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST. Do this for each of the devices.

20) PST is now ready to run. However, a point to note is that if i unplugged my USB, then plugged it back in, and opened PST, the remaining 3 devices that are necessary for p2kman would install. I don't know why. But PST seems to work perfectly with only the above 4 devices installed. This fact is further confirmed by running PST. Then noting that only the 3 of the 4 above devices that are installed with PST are present in Device Manager, even if all 7 devices have been installed.

PRACTICAL ISSUES

Phones with transflash card
i) You may have to remove your transflash to be able to use PST.
ii) In your phone's menu, go to Main menu -> Settings -> Connection -> USB Settings. Change Default Connection to Data/Fax Connection.

TROUBLESHOOTING

THE PROBLEM
After running PST and trying to perform an operation that requires a connection with the phone, you get the following error:

Phone not connected. Please connect and power up your phone.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
  • Firstly, check that your USB cable is firmly plugged into your phone. Very occassionally, it can come loose. Just to be sure, 'renew' the connection by unplugging your USB cable from your phone and plugging it back in.
  • Close all other software just in case there are conflicts.
  • If you have a phone with transflash memory, ensure that the transflash is removed and the USB Settings is set to Data/Fax.
  • Carry out the following instructions:
    1) Read the section on Drivers and Devices and Drivers, Devices, and the System Registry without carrying any of the instructions out. This is just to familiarise yourself with what you are going to have to do.
    2) Read and carry out the instructions about Uninstalling the Devices to make a Fresh Start in Drivers and Devices.
    3) Just to start afresh, close P2kMan, unplug your USB from your phone, plug it back in again, and run PST to see if it can make a connection with your phone.
    4) If you find that you still can't connect, you may need to do the registry 'fix' as outlined in Drivers, Devices, and the System Registry.
