CUSTOMISING YOUR E398: Section 3
SECTION 3: FLASHING AND FLEXING GUIDE
Before we start here's a list of things you should have ready: 1. PST 7.1.1 installed and working, (Just for your reference, if you've installed PST n it gives you security alerts or errors ,etc this means you havnt installed the patch!, so search for it n install it n then PST will work properly and allow you to flash/flex your phone) 2.The Flash/ Flex files ( To get the following Flash n Flexes n more go Here ) Currently there are the following flash and flex files floating around: 95R Flash file 7F Flex file 59R Monster file which also contains the 7C flex file all bundled as 1 ( hence the term ->monster) The 97R & 98R 3. USB cable 4. P2kman ready to reload your previously modified seems Important Note: When performing a firmware upgrade (or Flashing) , be advised that you will lose your current existing firmware and settings like any new skin directories, custom media/graphic files etc. And also correspondingly, when Reflexing your phone you will lose all your Seem edits and other settings too. So Back - Up all your media files - sounds, images, gifs etc & modified Seems as well if you are reflexing BEFORE you perform the relevant upgrade. Steps for Flashing: Once you connect your e398 to the pc with the USB cable 1. Go to the folder where you installed PST and locate the gold MultiFlashFlex.exe icon and click on it: 2. Once the MultiFlashFlex has opened up you will see it like so: 3. Confirm that your phone is listed and is Connected as shown above. If not check your USB cable for any lose contact or reinstall PST 4. Now since we are flashing the e398 check the "Enable Flash" button and then using the "Browse" button browse to where you unzipped the 95R file After uncompressing the 95R file you might see 2 files: (1) R372_G_0E.20.95R_reflash.shx (2) R372_G_0E.20.95R_lang002C_reflash.shx We need the R372_G_0E.20.95R_reflash.shx file The other file - R372_G_0E.20.95R_lang002C_reflash.shx - is just a language pack so DO NOT flash it onto your e398. 5. Once you select it you will see the selected flash file in the box as seen below, now check the following boxes - "Override existing phone software even if its newer than the superfile software" , "Master Clear phones after flexing" and "Master Reset phones after flexing" 6.Take a deep breath, then click Start 7. If you dont change programs and run any other programs you may see a progress bar but regardless dont worry if you see nothing. Just dont get impatient if you dont see anything happening and close the program (this could seriously screw up your phone) .. It will take around 5 minutes max for the flashing to complete Once you get the dialog box saying it's all done. Unplug your e398 then do a Master Reset and Master Clear. .... by going to Settings> Initial Setup> Master Reset , n then Master clear Once you have flashed your phone you have a choice of flexing it .. Flexing is not that necessary as if your happy with your current Flex you dont have to change it , the benefits of the 7F flex are the USB storage straightaway but you can get this with a seem edit as well ( the seem edit only works on the later s/w versions i have tried to enable it on the 34R but didnt succeed) Steps for Flexing: We do this a different way than Flashing: Again connect your e398 to the USB cable first. 1.Click on the PST phone Programmer icon on your desktop ( this is placed when you install PST if you dont have it then go to the folder where you installed PST and click on the UT_NVM.exe icon) 2. Then click on File->Open->pFLEX, and browse to the directory where SE7333AXXN107F.hs resides. 3. Click on Run after the 7F flex is loaded The flex takes around 20 - 30 mints to finish so dont get impatient and close PST , just wait it out!! 4.After this is done, master reset and master clear your phone again and voila you're all done ! ![]() Addendum: You might lose the ability to customize the Smart Key on your E398 after new firmware upgrade. So to this happen; Just edit your mma_dcp and mma_ucp files with hex editor, changing "EVoiceDial" to "AVoiceDial" in both files, and set offset 0C bit 1 to "on" in seem 0032_0001. N you'll get customization option back again ![]() Last edited by lneiln; 04-04-2005 at 14:00.. |

NOTES ABOUT SOME SELECTED FLASHES AND FLEXES
Originally Posted by eyesonly_d The different flash/flex options for the e398 currently are: 1.95R/7F 2.98R/GIKE 3.The V398 95R/7F is stable, and there really aren't any problems with running it. This combination is capable of everything the E398 is capablie of doing except quad-band. Sometimes you have to seem edit or something however. 98R/GIKE has been stable. I think it might be a tiny bit faster but not by much. I have heard some guys on the russian board say that this combo has an improved camera, but I really havn't noticed too much difference. Different walls and ringtones here. Also some special E398's can get quadband with this combination (but has yet to be proved 100%). The V398 seems to be stable for the month or so we've been playing with it. A couple people having some roaming and network issues, most don't however. Some people notice a few of the events not showing event lights, others report seeing them all. That seems to be it nowadays as far as bugs to work out however. I noticed that navigation is noticablely faster and there are many other improvements overall, see my guide for more information. The real bugger is that the process for upgrading to this firmware configuration is tricky. My personal take on all this: V398 is fun and probably the best overall combo you can run, but I really don't want to widely recommend it until we get a working flex (that works without flashing the monster pack and all that first). 95R/7F has been running great for a long time now and is still a great choice. 98R/GIKE is about the same and 95R/7F to me, but some people attest to it being better than 95R/7F, but I don't see a difference personally. Both 95R/7F and 98R/GIKE are both native E398 firmwares that are easier upgrades as well. Bottom line: 95R/7F: Simple Upgrade for the user who just wants to have their phone at it's best without havning to mess/tweak/fix it all the time. Flash it, customize it, and then forget it. 98R/GIKE: Simple Upgrade for the user who wants to be more cutting edge, and doesn't mind having to tweak/edit/fix from time to time. V398: Involved Upgrade for the enthusiast who wants to be very involved with tweaking their phone, fixing problems, and squeezing every bit of performance and customisation out of it. Find eyesonly_d 's thread on tranforming your e398 to the V398 Here Thnx for helping us out eyesonly_d ![]() DISCLAIMER: Following this guide is done at your own risk. Modifying anything that is not accessible by the Proprietary software Motorola supplies along with it's phones - Mobile Phone Tools - can void your warranty because, as an end user, you should not be fiddling with your phone's core file system. The same goes for Seem editing and other file modifications (like mma_ucp, mma_dcp, plmn_text_table.bin ,gain_table.bin etc ) which can render your phone dead if done incorrectly!! Addendum
ADDENDUM
Since the last post a LOT has happened so i thought it best to update this section , so that everone can be brought up-to-speed. Firstly a lot of users have been asking if the guide holds good for flashing a Monster Pack And Language packs , The answer is Yes to both ! Just flash it as you would flash a regular flash file , i.e. using the flash section of MFF. Also IMO checking the master clear/reset option doesnt really apply bcos you're flashing not flexing so you can leave them unchecked. Secondly n more importantly eyesonly_d has found out how to back -up your current s/w version. Read about it in This Thread This has enabled him to create monster packs with most recently leaked s/w version for the e398 -> the 95R_A , and once again he's combined the best of both worlds with the fast 95R_A and the V3 flex and there are new V398 Monster Packs available Here There's even an Official Website now hosting the V398 files and tracking their progress Here Happy Tweaking ![]() Cheers ![]() Last edited by BrightSpark; 20-05-2005 at 02:26.. |
