The next review it?s for the phone Nokia 6220, and its software described below:
Software: V 3.07 Date: 21-08-2003 Model and type: 6220, RH-20 As you all know, this phone it?s only for sale in HK since the provider CSL got their EDGE network from Nokia, I?ve got a hand on this phone since I bought it through eBay at a price of 470USD, expensive? Yes, worth it? Yes. I know how little information on this headset we can find on the net so far, so I?ve decided to put a personal review of it for those interested. Any questions you may have after reading this review, I?ll gladly respond them. I?ll divide the review into several topics, and I won't include much info of the functions already known by most of the users, like grid menu which it's supported, and calendar, and so on, here's my take: Display - Screen As we know, the phone comes with a 4096 color passive matrix display; it has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels and has the ability to show 5 lines of text and a service line. When messaging, up to 8 lines of text can be displayed on the screen. Compared to my Nokia 7210, I can see improvement, of course, I would love if this phone came with a 65K screen like most models on the market or soon to be released, but I can?t really complaint. It?s brighter, and looks overall sharper than the rest of nokia phones out there. Contrast actually helps when changing color themes, since previously you could see some errors in the bars when some colors were used like grey, or green for example. Nokia does need to update their screens once and for all in the upcoming models, specially those who will be expensive in their releases like this one, being a business phone, I?m sure users would love to see a better screen for the price they?re paying. Don?t get me wrong, it depends on the user at the end?me? I?m in no extreme need of a better screen, but facing reality and facts, other companies are indeed making an effort to support much better resolutions, and a better quality overall. Controls - Keypad A blessing indeed. The numeric keypad of this phone it?s a welcomed change from nokia, knowing they do tend to experiment with keypads designs every now and then. It?s easy to use, it?s well distributed, and the number keypad comes with 2 grooves indented, so it?s easier to know exactly where you are in the keyboard without the risk of miss-pressing an undesired button. Finally nokia got their act together when it comes to lighting of the keypad, you can see it brightly and perfectly, all numbers light up, there?s no different in the lighting like on previous models like the 6610 or the 7210 were some keys were more illuminated than others. I believe they did a bit of research and knew exactly where to put the keypad led on this phone. It comes with a 4-way scroll key, which we can use to navigate through menu, phone numbers, and settings or move the cursor or highlight in text editing. When the phone it?s on standby mode, pressing the keys will give you quick access to certain functions: ? Press < to create a text message. ? Press > to open calendar ? Press [down] to open the phonebook ? Press [up] will open up the camera, once in the camera you can change modes by pressing and holding keys [ < or > ], standard photo it?s the default, pressing said keys will change to ?portrait photo?, ?night vision? and ?video?. Also, selections keys are here, which as we all know will perform the action above it. In this phone model, you can change the text above the right key, which it?s often used for contacts. Options to change are ?go to?, ?calendar?, ?radio? plus others. A welcome addition, for those like me who want quick access to the most used functions, so ?go to? will do the trick. Memory - Storage The headset comes with a shared memory of 4megs, which it?s divided for the use of: - Contacts - Text and Multimedia Messages - Gallery [ ringtones, wallpapers, videos, recordings ] - Organiser - Applications and Games Memory it?s dynamic. We all know what that is, so I won?t go further. Being a business model, this phone could come with a slot for memory cards?since it support edge and it?s designed for that type of user who needs to constantly download content from the web. But 4megs it?s not that really bad for a user like me. Also, I think the need for more memory ranges from user to user. Camera The equipped camera on this phone can take photos or record video clips. It produces pictures in JPEG format and the video clips in H.263 (SubQCIF) format at a resolution of 352x288. Photo quality can be changed, the better the quality, the bigger the size of the picture will be. Video clips are not 15 seconds like it says on the nokia page, but 20, with audio included. You can also mute the audio later on during playback. Like other models, taking a picture it?s easy; you use the phone display as the viewfinder. Quality of the camera? Fair, it could be better, especially in dark scenarios, but pictures I?ve taken so far in daylight are clear, like I?ve said at night, it could be a problem. If you use the night mode, the camera will slow down somewhat, so it?s not very useful when it comes to making videos. Modes of the camera were previously discussed. And it comes with a self-timer function of 10 seconds with a lapsed beeping sound. 3 times in the course of the first 8 seconds, and on the last second it beeps 3 times and then it takes the picture. The father you are from the camera, quality will decrease. It doesn?t come with a zooming option to solve this sadly, though after taking a picture you can use the ?zoom? function of the software to navigate through the picture with a closer look at it. I saw a question from a user somewhere, asking if you could set an image to a contact so it could display a picture of the caller. It?s supported, you can set pictures for your contacts so when they call, and you will see the picture on the right-low corner of the display. Portraits picture fits the best, though you can use standard photos as well. The contacts menu will also give you the option to display ?name and image?, or other options like ?name and number? or ?name list? like before. Connection Infrared on top of the phone next to power button, Pop-port? [pop-port is a Nokia designed outlet that automatically identifies accessories attached to the phone] on the bottom of the phone next to the charger port. And like the 6200 it comes with SyncML, which allows you to synchronize contacts, calendar and more with your pc. I haven?t tested the pop-port yet, with any other device other than the stereo headset [ for radio use and hands free use ] but its use will be for the music stand, and other nokia original accessories that will come due time. A data cable will be released hopefully, but right now there?s no support of the phone in programs such as ?MobiMB? or ?Polyphonix Studio? to name a few. Ringtones For many users this was a topic of confusion. Some of them said the phone supported 4 chords, others said it supported more than that. It does, 16 simultaneous chords can be played on a single ring tone, and a welcomed changed indeed. Of course, we can find better models out there that play more than 32, but this doesn?t seem to be a priority for nokia right now. Not in this model at least. It does improve from previous models. I mean, the 7210 tones are really crappy?they could only play 4 chords and the volume of it was lousy to say the least. In the 25 ringing tones that comes with the phone, nokia did their best to show how much improvement there was, there?s tones like ?Pursue? to name one, which not only have the 16 instruments playing at once but the volume of it it?s flawless, finally, you can hear your phone in a crowded place. 21 calls tones, and 4 messages tones are pre-defined in the headset I got. All of them supporting a vast range of instruments and also including vibration on them according to the beats. You?ll be able to set a tone to a caller group from the gallery, and also the tone message can be changed to one within the gallery. Software in this phone it?s flawless so far, they thought of the mistakes they?ve done before, and fixed it. A nice addition which it?s not mentioned on the nokia site, the phone also supports AMR files as ring tone. Whether you want to record your own sound [with the voice recorder included] ?incoming call? or whatever with your own voice or you can easily convert a wav file to amr and play it on this cell phone. I love this function, I absolutely do. The speakerphone it?s loud and clear as well, very much like the one in the 7210. Battery So far, it?s been fair. I need to charge the phone every 2 days, and I play with it very often. I?ve noticed that the more I play with the camera, the less battery life you get. But on stand-by, or even with a frequent use of calls. You can easily get more than 4 hours of calls, and more than 3-4 days on standby. Call Quality I have to say that this phone has the best quality of any other nokia I?ve tried so far. There?s absolutely no hiss, nor unpleasant sounds when you make or receive a call. The quality of the earpiece it?s awesome and it?s well placed so you can hear everything clear and loud. Volume went up a little bit too much, since sometimes I do need to drop to lower volume settings during a call and especially on the radio, it sounds amazing. Really amazing. Continue... |

Menu
For those wondering, here?s a complete list of the menu, taking directly out of the manual. Each menu has a submenu of course; if anyone wants to elaborate a specific menu, let me know. 1. Call Register - Missed Calls - Received Calls - Dialled Numbers - Delete Recent Call List - GPRS data counter - GPRS connection timer 3. Contacts - Search - Add Contact - Delete - My Presence - Subscribed Names - Copy - Settings - Speed Dials - Voice Tags - Info Numbers - Service Numbers - My Numbers - Caller Groups 4. Settings - Profiles - Tone Settings - Display Settings - Time and date settings - Personal Shortcuts - Connectivity - Call Settings - Phone Settings - Chat and my presence settings - Enhancement settings - Security Settings - Restore factory Default 5. Gallery - View Folders - Add Folder - Delete Folder - Rename Folder - Usage Rights List - Gallery Downloades 6. Media - Camera - Radio - Recorder 7. Organiser - Alarm Clock - Calendar - To-do List - Notes 8. Games - Select game - Game downloads - Memory - Settings 9. Applications - Select Application - App. Downloads - Memory 10. Go to [customize in phone settings] - List of functions defined by users will be shown 13. SIM Services Final Notes I find this headset to be one of the best out there from nokia, there?s really an improvement in the sharper screen, the ringtones, the software version, and the well known features like radio, or the camera. For the price I?ve paid I?m very satisfied. Of course, like every other phone out there, it does have flaws, which other users might consider before buying. But it all comes down to what you need from a phone and I do have to say that everything I needed it?s right here. It?s beautiful, it?s light weighted and it does come packed with functions I use and need. I haven?t got the time to use the EDGE capabilities of it yet, since my provider it?s still changing their network, but GPRS does the trick so far. One function I was not able to try so far, which it?s the presence enhanced contact, my provider does not support it so far, let?s see if they do in the upcoming future. No ghost on the software, very fast and responsive menu, packed with features they've neglected in the past. Support for better polyphonics and amr recordings, edge, small, good design, automatic keypad lock with code [so people can't use the phone even when it's turned on]. I have to say I'm very much pleased. At the end, it could be better, we all know that, but I guess I'll keep this one for a while, it does fullfills my expectations. Hope this was in some way helpful, if anyone have further questions, please, go ahead. Thank you. |

The first one, to a nokia 7210, with a soundclip. And the other, a videoclip of 81.8kb of 20 seconds with audio, to a friend with a nokia 3650 from a different provider. And received a videoclip in return succesfully, I was able to play and to save it on the gallery for later use. |

Where do you see the resolution of it? I click on details and I get this:
Name: Video001.3gp Size: 81.8KB Date: 28-09-2003 Time: 11:13:50pm Length: 0000:00:20 Format: 3GP Copyright: None I imagine it's the resolution of the camera, I'll check the manual to see if there's mention of the resolution of videoclips. And yeap, 81.8kb of 20 seconds, with perfect audio. |

I sent the video through email, and the resolution of it according to nokia media player it's of: 176x144 pixels.
Also, it does record call duration. Last call duration, and total of calls time. Until you reset counters. I'll take pictures of the phone tomorrow and post them. One of them in the dark so you all see the lighting of the keyboard, they should be posted tomorrow. |

I wonder why they took that away from the software, it would make things a lot easier. You just can send either sms, or business cards through IR. |

The nokia 6220 it's just comming out. So my guess will be they did a bit of work on that area, but that's the size of the video indeed. 20 seconds, and it's the max it can record, like orange said, it's not the duration of the video, but the limit of mms. Which on this phone it's 100KB. So the max video will always be 81.8kb, I've recorded more than one, and it's the same size always, 20 seconds each. Prolly cause they think you'll add some text, or something else to the mms. To complete the 100 kb. |

Like I promised, I finally fixed my camera and well got recorded some video clips instead of a crappy picture...for some odd reason, the camera went to hell and the closer I get to the phone display the more blurry the image gets. I'll try to get some more tomorrow with a different digital camera.
Here they are: Video 1 Video 2 I made 2 more, if anyone wants it, let me know. I'll post some stills tomorrow, with hopefully a better quality when I approach the screen. Last edited by nokiaven; 02-10-2003 at 11:58.. |

Weird, I hit right-click >> save as...
And I can download them. to smc: you can't use the FM radio as an alarm, but I believe there's no really need. The alarm tone got so pumped up on volume that it does wakes me up this time But yeah, could be cool if you could use the radio, perhaps a software revision might do the trick. Try to save the videos instead on clicking directly on the link, and let me know. |

- Text messages - Multimedia msgs. It's a non-removable application. It's actually pretty amazing. Fast and responsive, I'm checking my 2 pop accounts through it, and so far it's been excellent, no errors, no bugs so far. |

So far I've been able to attach an animated image [.gif, supported on the model] an audio clip [ amr or midi ] and a videoclip [3gp] at the same time. But there doesn't seem to be a way to add more of the same object. So you can either send a videoclip, a soundfile, or a graphic, one at a time, or a combination of those 3. But 2 soundfiles, or 2 videoclips it's not allowed. I'll keep messing around with mms creation and let you know. |

Oooooo roll on with the 6220. The sooner it gets to NZ the better.
One question nokiaven: I had two 6610's here which suffered from poor audio quality on the headset (not going through the headphones but just using the phone normally). If anyone talked too loud the audio got rather distorted and just generally sounded crappy. I had it swapped for another 6610; same issue. In the end I got an 8310, with zero audio problems. It seems to be a rather widespread problem with some 6610's (note: not all of them are like this). What I want to know is, does the same thing happen with the 6220? Does it have the same type of speaker as the 6610? Because if it does, I can see it having the same sound issues... Any assistance gratefully appreciated ![]() |

I know what you mean, one of the crappy 6610's rolled up on my hands and the problem was indeed VERY frustrating.
Like I said on the review: Quote myself, "Call Quality I have to say that this phone has the best quality of any other nokia I?ve tried so far. Really amazing." There's no hiss, no unpleasant sounds, the voice it's clear and sharp, whether people talks loud or low it doesn't make a difference, you'll still get the same audio quality, just different volume depending on who's talking. Which it's one of the things I'm most pleased about from this phone, my old 7210 used to be a pain when it came to sound quality. The 6220 corrects all those issues. Believe me, you'll love the quality. |

I mainly did it out of frustration. Cause I know how hard it is to find any detailed info on this nokia headset...of course, I've always trusted nokia and loved most of their headsets [ yes yes, with its flaws ] but that's not the case for everyone [ specially some of you SE-Samsung-Moto lovers and nokia haters
?] So I went blindly and bought the headset myself even though I knew I was not going to be dissapointed I would've like some information prior to the purchase. And I made the review for those who were considering this particular model, so they get a little bit more of info and samples to encourage them. Thank you for reading, and for the kind words. It was definetly my pleasure. |

Good spirit, very encouraging really... ![]() Personally I do not hate any brands, as you can see I have some NOKIA's phones also... I don't understand why some people hate NOKIA so much, just like they have vendetta whatsoever... ![]() |

One question:
Is there a dedicated button for voice recording (like on S55) or do you have to find it in the menu when talking to another person (like on T610)? I assume it can record when talking to another person as well as yourself. PS. Great review! Thanks.. PPS. Does anybody have a copy of the ringtones? They seem to have been deleted from the webserver.. Last edited by Hjorten; 04-10-2003 at 08:35.. |

Not a biggie for me, but can it tape the radio? I would guess no, as the 6610 I had couldn't.
BTW nokiaven cheers for the speech quality thing. A friend of mine at work said that the 6220 had the shell as the 6610, so it would probably have the same type of speaker/audio probs... |

And yes, you can record while talking to someone else. On previous models, you could record up to 3 minutes of talk time. That was it. On this model, you can record as many as the memory allows you to, of course with intervals of 1 minute each time. Concerning the ringtones, they were not deleted. I just tried, you can't click on them directly, you need to "right click and save as..." in order to get them. Enjoy. |

That's a function I've only had the chance to see on the 5510 so far. And concerning the audio quality. Like I've said before, there's no problems in that area...not in my headset at least. I've tried both 6610 and 7210 and I found some problems in that area, whether it has the same type of speaker [ which I doubt ] there's no noticeable problem. Loudspeaker seems to have improved, more clear and audible, specially when radio it's routed throught it, it's damn loud and clear. Then again, I didn't got 5 headsets, just one. Some of them I'm sure could be defective...not my case though. |

Alarm Time Alarm Tone Under "Alarm Tone" menu you have the following options: Standard Radio Ringing Tone Open Gallery So you can use it smc, but you need to have the stereo headset plugged, or have the phone plugged to the "music stand" from nokia...otherwise, it will use the standard tone. How lovely, even for me it was a surprise ![]() Now I just need a music stand, yes...let's buy one then. |
