There have been rumours for ages of the next Treo device running a Windows Mobile (probably Windows Mobile 5 pocket PC phone edition). Indeed, HTC which makes the Treo also makes virtually all the Windows Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, so it would not be difficult to imagine.

However, I remain skeptical, more so since PalmOne acquired PalmSource. It strikes me that they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they switched to WM5. At the same time, since Palm Cobalt has been put on hold indefinitely, and Palm is currently undergoing the slow and laborious port to Linux, I suppose there could be some appeal in switching to WM.

And correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the icons on the soft keys have to change as well?

it's a fake no doubt about it, but yes I like photoshoping images and also dream about devices that would be really cool. Maybe someday Plam will see that and make it real

Palm {hardware} and Palmsource{operating system software} are two seperate and distinct companies. Palm could make a WM5.0 device, and have been on the record saying they are open to any OS that can make their hardware better.

Since there won't be a new Palm OS ready until 2007 {PalmLinux}, moving to WM5.0 on some hardware is a good way to spread the risk out a bit.
