this might be a really stupid question!!
i installed the PC suite software a little while back.
i was just wondering if it's possible to delete or remove the file manager icon from the desktop. i like to keep my desktop clear and only have the recycle bin there permanantly and that damn file manager icon is really wrecking my whole feng shui thing!

If you right click on your mouse and drag it onto the "start" button, it should move it. It will then only be visible when you select the start menu.

V3PO that doesnt work. all that does is create a shortcut in your start menu.

MCFloater

you can do it by editing your registry files. just open up your registry editor (Start > click on "Run" > type "regedit").

go to the folder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

there should be a couple of folders there with string names like
{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}

clicking on any which one of them will change the right pane of the window. double clicking on the (default) from the right pane will reveal the name of the folders. just find the one for Sony Ericsson File Manager and delete its folder

i still haven't figured it out.
why on earth do sony not just give you the option of deleting the shortcut on your desktop like every other program for the last decade?!

MCFloater, Haven't you noticed that Sony Ericsson File Manager icon on Desktop is actually a System folder (like Recycle bin), not a Shortcut. How do you usually manage folders and files? Via My Computer or via Windows Explorer? The later would have uncovered this to you, what the icons are - shortcuts or not...

To your question why it is like this, I can't explain, unfortunately.

i did realise it was a system folder. what i meant was why doesn't sony just make the file manager install into the programs folder rather than the windows folder.
it just seems stupid to force you to keep an icon on your desktop and there doesn't seem to be any reasoning behind this

MCFloater, Sometimes some Googling is for great help, just look this:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize/browse_thread/thread/48f3e65da13536ae/2bace2d4fc8c7a15?lnk=st&q=windows+xp+how+to+move+system+folder+from+deskto p&rnum=1&hl=en#2bace2d4fc8c7a15

I have a Ericsson p800 phone and the software it installs a folder
called "Myp800". The use is to browse the contents of the phone, when
it is connected to the pc (like other PDA's). Being a childrens games
developer for 7 years (Thought I knew many Windows tricks) I wanted to
move the folder from the desktop to somewhere else.

Similar problem - and got solved, what I can see in a hurry...

try typing "Sony Ericsson File Manager" in any explorer adress bar. see if that accesses your phone files.

thanks for the link Mark, worked like a charm.
you have to make a shortcut by dragging the icon on your desktop into my documents then do HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\
and delete the sony Ericsson file from there and restart your computer.
Et voila!
it's now gone from your desktop and is accessable from My Documents.
Thanks for all the help

I found the quickest way to stop the Icon from showing on the desktop is using Windows TweakUI.
Go to desktop and untick the Sony Ericsson File Manager.
Here you have a choice of what you wish to show on the desktop.
I.E,
IE, My Computer, My Docs, Network Places, Recycle Bin, or whatever.

I hope this will be of some assistance to this question.
I agree Sony Ericsson should give you the choice of showing the Icon or Not.

Have a Happy and Safe New Year.
